Serie A's 6th Season Kicks Off With A Werder Bremen Victory
Werder Bremen and Stoke City kicked off the start of the season today, and it was no surprise as to who scored the season's first goal. Just five minutes into the match, Claudio Pizarro found the back of the net to put Bremen on top by a goal. Stellar defense from Werder Bremen would keep the score steady for the rest of the match. Defender Sebastian Prodl earned the start today, and his height came into play throughout the match, including one vital header won against Peter Crouch in the box. Despite some aggressive attacks from Stoke in the final few minutes, Werder Bremen held onto its 1-0 lead long enough to hear the final whistle blow. The victory is a key start to Bremen's title defense, and the team will finish out the matchweek against newly-promoted Corinthians and longtime foe Spartak Moscow.

CSKA goes up early on only to find themselves trailing pretty quickly in the 2nd half. Oliseh earns his team a penalty in the 90th minute, in which Dzagoev converts off the left post and in.

GG Al. Too bad there weren't any replays for some reason. It would have been nice to see Doumbia's and Toivonen's goals. Toivonen's was especially nice. GL rest of the way

    FORTUNE FAVORS HOME SIDE

PSV Eindhoven had lady luck on their side in the home and season opener against new boys Fulham. The home side dominated the first half of play, and finally found a breakthrough when J. Lens crossed to a streaking D. Mertens in the box, who did well to head the ball past M. Schwarzer. The second half started much the same, with PSV controlling possession and completing strings of passes through midfield. But somewhat against the run of play, second-half sub B. Ruiz found C. Dempsey on the back post for a well-taken headed goal to level the score. It seemed things were headed towards a draw, but D. Mertens broke free in the box and sent a shot past Schwarzer. The ball struck the post, bounced off the back of the keeper, and dribbled over the line for the game winner. Certainly Fulham will feel they deserved the share of points.

GG Red....I don't know who that winger was you had....but he was a handful...kept beating both Johnson/Baird all game long with that pace - anyways...the winner was heartbreaker the way it happened but you did have another shot hit the posts....was hoping for another draw but looks like 1pt wont do much in this league....but thats 2 last minute losses for me in first 3 games....hope this isnt a trend or its gonna be a loong season!....BTW - surprised possession stat looked even...seemed like i barely touched the ball during that first half...lol...

Both teams were looking to start Serie A with a bang, but this match was anything but. Neither team had a whole lot of chances or shots. This game was played in the midfield. Alot of sloppy passes from both sides. Corinthians almost stole this one with a slow rolling shot that bounced off the post in the 90th minutes. It would have been the steal of the century since neither squad deserved 3 points. However, Fulham and Corinthians both were pleased with 1 point to start of the season. Good Match hokie79

Bremen Closes Matchweek With Second Victory
With 4 points in their first two matches, Werder Bremen was looking to finish off the week with a win in their first home match of the season. The German club played host to Corinthians, whose manager IJGator had recently been promoted in his first Serie B season. Werder Bremen took a hold of the match just before the end of the first half. In the 42nd minute, Lukas Schmitz played in a cross to the middle of the box. Claudio Pizarro beat out 3 Corinthians defenders to get a head on the ball, and found the back of the net to give Bremen a 1-0 lead. Bremen would double their lead shortly thereafter, with defender Lukas Schmitz nailing a long-distance free kick. With the ball placed 34 yards from goal, Schmitz curled in the ball to skim past the keeper and into the net. Philipp Bargfrede put the finishing touches on the match with a goal in the 69th minute, which was set up by a wonderful pass from Claudio Pizarro. Tim Wiese earned his third consecutive clean sheet with the 3-0 victory, thanks in part to a stonewall defense in front of him. Werder Bremen have a Coppa Tradizione group stage match next on tap, with the opponent to be determined following the draw later today.

Flemengo picks up their first win of the season in dramatic fashion as a contraversial penalty drawn by Vagner Love in the 90' was put home by Ronaldinho for the 2-1 win. Flamengo controlled the ball a majority of the contest but were only able to land a handful of quality chances. Ronaldinho tallied his first goal of the season on a free kick curled around the wall in the 22nd minute. The 1-0 score would carry on until the 49' when Marco Reus made an absolutely brilliant run resulting in a De Camargo volley goal. The score would remain that way as both teams had a couple chances down n the stretch, but Flamengo was putting an assault for the final 10 minutes or so. Then the controversial call at the start of stoppage time as Vagner Love was taken down in the box as he jostled a defender for the ball just inside the 18. The ref pointed to the spot and Ronaldinho was able to bury it for the game-winner.

EINDHOVEN HANG ON FOR ROAD WIN

PSV Eindhoven dominated the first half, then hung on for a 1-0 win over B. M'gladbach in manager RedAL's first game in Germany since leaving TSG Hoffenheim. The away side bossed possession in the fist half, holding a 59-41 edge going into the break. Seven minutes before the whistle, J. Lens broke into the box and sent the ball to the far post, where D. Mertens was waiting for a difficult finish to put PSV ahead. The second half was a different story, however, as M'gladbach asserted themselves in the match. After just 1 attempt on goal in the first half, the home side took 9 shots in the second half. The Eindhoven did well to stave off wave after wave of attack, and the final whistle mercifully blew after a scrum in the area.
