Match #1: ATL. Mineiro vs Dinamo Moscow

Coppa Results: Round of 16 3-0 F win
    League Standings: 3rd Serie C; 6-3-4 record; 19 GF 19 GA

thebouncer24 decided to go with the Brazilian team Atletico Mineiro for his maiden season in Serie play, and is currently clinging onto 3rd place in Serie C. With the previous game being a forfeit win, it is hard to judge the team in Cup play, as they performed well enough in the group stages early on but were bounced from the Coppa Tradizione with 1 point in 3 games. However, that 1 point came in their last game against a Montpellier team that was chasing the win for a 1st place finish in the group, so maybe this team has figured some things out.

In league play the team is solid throughout, but their offense seems to be based around both Jo and Ronaldinho. Both players have played on the "old" continent of Europe previously, but with drastically different results in their careers. Jo has led the team in goals this season with 6 in the league, while Ronaldinho has been the main contributor, with 7 assists to his name which is tied for best in the division. GK Victor has recorded 4 clean sheets in 13 games as well, so the team is more than capable of playing defense when needed.

Just like their opponents, Captain Clutch and Dinamo come into this quarterfinal matchup off a 3-0 forfeit win in the previous round. Dinamo had a rough go of it in the group stages, failing to register a goal, or a point, in Group D as they were last in the group. In the league, the team is not where they would have wanted to be at the moment and I believe that comes down to the inconsistent play of Kevin Kuranyi. With only 2 goals in 10 games, the German forward has failed to live up to his lofty standards, and without him leading the line the team has only scored 11 goals in 10 games. The defense doesn't seem to be a problem with this team, with only 14 goals against in 10 games if the offense could come alive the team could make a serious run at the top 3 in Serie C.
    PREDICTION:
In the one league meeting between the two teams Dinamo put on their best offensive performance of the season with a 3-1 home win. I think the Brazilian team will try to gain some type of revenge this game, as they welcome the Moscow club to Brazil with the hopes of moving onto the semifinals. With both defenses showing the ability to play well, I think this will end in a close one score game with the Brazilians ultimately coming out on top.
    Atl Mineiro 2 - 1 Dinamo Moscow

    Match #2: Hoffenheim - Genoa

Coppa Results: Round of 16 3-0 F win
    League Results: 6th Serie B; 5-1-9; 15 GF 22 GA

With 15 goals scored in 15 games in Serie B, it is easy to see where the problems lie for IJGator and his German squad. The group stage saw this team end bottom of Group F with only 1 point in their 3 group games. Oddly enough the offense did well, scoring 5 goals in those 3 games, but 10 goals against doomed the team as they look to make a cup run in the Confederazione side of things.

Sejad Salihovic has bee the main target man for Hoffenheim, scoring 6 of the team's 15 goals in league play. With Eren Derdiyok having 4 to his name as well, it seems like the team is struggling to get goals from other members of the team. With two players on the team accouting for 10 goals, the rest of the team needs to pick it up and score when they are called upon as 5 goals for the rest of the players will not cut it in league, or cup, play.

Coppa Results: Round of 16 1-0 win over Palermo
    League Results: 4th Serie C; 5-3-3; 28 GF 21 GA

As one of the few teams to actually play, and win, their round of 16 game, Geneseo98 and Genoa come into the game off a tight 1-0 win over fellow Italian side Palermo. As seems to be a common theme, it was the young Italian wonderkid Ciro Immobile who provided the winner in the game, as Genoa were able to notch a clean sheet and come out on top in a closely contested game. Genoa ended the group stages 3rd in Group G, with 3 points coming off a win against Serie A side Bordeaux. The defense got absolutely lit up in the group games, with 11 goals against ultimately being too much for the Italian side to mount a serious challenge for one of the top 2 spots in the group.

In league play Genoa are in position to move up the table as they hold a 2 games in hand advantage over 3rd place Atletico Minero; who they trail by 3 points. With 28 goals scored in 11 games the offense has been purring this season, but the 21 goals against must be a cause for concern for the coach. Sebastian Frey has only 1 clean sheet in those 11 league games, showing exactly how odd that 1-0 round of 16 win was for this team. What the team lacks in defense however, they make up in offense with Borriello (11) and Immobile (9) forming one of the most formidable attacking duos in all the Series. If Genoa are to win this game, expect one of these two to provide the difference in the game.

    Prediction:

One team struggles offensively while the other struggles defensively. Whoever controls the tempo of the game will come out with the win here, and with Hoffenheim putting all their eggs in the Coppa basket, I expect them to come out with the win here in a 3-2 type game.

    Hoffenheim 3 - 2 Genoa

    Match #3 Hamburg - Parma
    [IMG]
Coppa Results: Round of 16 3-0 F win
    League Results: 8th Serie B; 4-2-6; 17 GF 21 GA

As another team that was given a forfeit win, it is hard to judge exactly what this team is capable of. UcanHateMeNow has done a decent enough job with this team, and with 2 teams dropping out of Serie B already he can now focus on a Coppa run. Hamburg ended group play in 3rd place in Group B, with a win over fellow Confedeazione quarter-finalists Atletico Mineiro accounting for their 3 points.

It is very rare to see a team rely on a single player as much as Hamburg do with Rafael van der Vaart. He leads the team in goals scored in league play (7) and also leads the team in assists (3). While Atjoms Rudnevs has done what he can with 4 goals and 3 assists to his name, the team needs to find another player to step up and be accounted for.

Coppa Results: Round of 16 3-2 win over Aston Villa
    League Results: 8th Serie A; 5-2-6; 28 GF 26 GA

A 90' goal by Darren Bent made the game interesting, but Parma would eventually run out 3-2 winners in their round of 16 game against Villa. heznfire hasn't faired well in the Coppa group stages, and his 3rd place finish in the tough Group D surely would not have went well with the fans. However, as one of only two Serie A clubs in this side of the competition, Parma might look at this competition as a chance to get some silverware.

In league play the team has gone through a Jekyll and Hyde type season. With only 2 draws in 13 games, the team has, for the most part, either played really well in their wins, or not good enough in their losses. With wins over Udinese, Swansea City, Sao Paulo, Montpellier, and fellow Confederazione quarterfinalist Bordeaux, this team has shown a capability of winning any game. I think the key for this team is how quick they can attack their opponents on the counter. With a 5 man backline, the Italians look to suck their opponents in, with the hopes of springing a quick counterattack with the speed of Biabiany looking to cause problems.

    Prediction:

With Hamburg being a team that looks to control the pace, it will be interesting to see how Parma deal with this game. Will they stick with their 5 man backline, even against a team that, on paper, does not look like an attacking threat? If Parma do stick with their ways, I can see this being a drab 1-0 win for either side. Seeing as Parma will want to take this competition seriously with their league title dreams all but over, I can see them grabbing that win.

    Hamburg 0 - 1 Parma

    Match 4: Stuttgart - Bordeaux

Coppa Results: Prelim Round 2-0 W over Galatasaray ; Round of 16 1-0 W over Santos
    League Results: 11th Serie B; 2-3-10; 8 GF 25 GA

Stuttgart come into this game with back to back clean sheets in the knockout competition as the defense stood tall against Galatasaray and Santos. If Stuttgart can control the game speed then they have every chance of winning any game they are in; the problem with this team is their ability, or lack-thereof, to score once they have conceded. With 8 goals scored in 15 Serie B games the German team has had problems scoring goals, but now with relegation not being a concern (with the 2 B squads dropping out) Stuttgart can put all their focus into this cup competition.

Stuttgart ended the group stages of the competition in last place of Group E; however they were able to draw 2 of their games, while losing the third, for a total of 2 points. Draws against Marseiile and Swansea show that this team can hang with anybody, but an unexpected loss to Bilbao ultimately doomed the German side in the group stages.

For whatever reason, Cacau hasn't been in any kind of good form this season, with only 1 league goal to his name in 15 games played. Cacau was a revelation for this squad back in their Serie C days, and with his no-show in Serie B, it is easy to see why this team has struggled for goals. While Ibisevic has 3 to his name, it is Cacau who must find his scoring boots if this team is to advance further in this competition.

Coppa Results: Round of 16 3-0 F win
    League Results: 7th Serie A; 5-4-7; 25 GF 29 GA

As the last team to be previewed, Bordeaux and their coach Broncos218 have to be the surprise here. Finishing bottom of their group with 0 points was not what the team would have envisioned, as a coach who has won multiple titles previously has found the switch from Bremen to Bordeaux a rough one to start. Giving up an average of 4 goals a game in their 3 Coppa losses was always going to be a recipe for disaster, and with a forfeit win in the last round it is hard to judge how this team will do in this knockout game.

In league play the defense has been decent (being 1 of only 3 Serie A teams giving up less than 2 goals a game) but something seems to be missing from this team. Obraniak has been doing all he can as an AM for this team, notching 10 goals and 4 assists in the league, but Broncos seems to be missing a Claudio Pizarro type forward. Someone who could stand up when called upon and score that vital goal when needed. Currently Gouffran (5) and Diabate (3) have not done what is needed in league play to push Bordeaux towards challenging for the title, and that must change in a hurry or I fully expect the coach to part ways with the club.

    Preview:

If Stuttgart's fans can rally behind the team and push them forward I can see an upset in the making. However, for that to happen the team must believe that they can beat a "powerhouse" Serie A side. If Stuttgart get to attacking early on, they can control the tempo of the game and snatch that unlikely win. However, if they sit back and allow Bordeaux to get comfortable, then that will spell disaster for the home side. This game will end closer than the bookies think, but with Broncos wanting to get something out of this season I can't see past Bordeaux in this one.

    Stuttgart 1 - 2 Bordeaux

A new formation and a new midfield has reaped benefits in a number of friendlies for Hoffenheim. This will be their first real test. Roberto Firmino has stepped up his game in a central midfield role. The Germans are anxious!
