Falcons Survive In ArizonaBattle Of The Top 2 NFC Teams Takes Overtime The 9-1 Falcons traveled to Arizona to take on the 7-3 Cardinals and the game started off perfectly for the Falcons. The Cardinals got the ball first but would turn it over almost immediately. With the short field, QB Cejay Kennedy would find Julio Jones in the end zone for a quick 7-0 lead. Arizona would have a better next possession but still ended up punting. The Falcons would put together a long drive on their next possession but ended up having to settle for a FG inside of the Cardinals' red zone for a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. The 2nd quarter, however, was all Arizona. The 2 teams would trade possessions until late in the 3rd when Arizona would get on the scoreboard behind a Ryan Williams run to make a 10-7. Then after a Kennedy interception, the Cardinals were in the end zone again thanks to a pass to Kellen Winslow inside the 2 minute warning. Then behind another Kennedy interception, the Cardinals were in scoring position again but had to resort for a FG with no time remaining to take a 17-10 lead into the half. Things weren't looking good as the Falcons were trailing at the half for just the first time this season. They had the opportunity to respond though and recommitted themselves to the running game and Rashard Mendenhall. This was a key to the 2nd half for Atlanta. The Falcons got the ball to start the half and moved the ball down the field efficiently for a TD to make it tied at 17. On Arizona's next possession though, it was their turn to make a costly turnover as QB Shaq Marshall was intercepted by CB Chris Owens who would return it all the way for a TD and a 24-17 lead. In the 4th quarter though, Marshall would find WR Miles Austin deep to tie it back up at 24. Atlanta would put together another long drive on their next possession though and take the lead back behind a 42 yard Mendenhall run and make it 31-24. The lead wouldn't last though as Marshall would hit on another deep pass, this time to Larry Fitzgerald, to make it 31-31 just before the 2 minute warning. It was an intense final 2 minutes with turnovers for both sides but neither team was able to add any points. In overtime, the Falcons won the toss and got the ball. Atlanta tried to keep the ball on the ground but were held up and were forced to attempt a long FG or to punt. The Falcons decided to go for the win and sent kicker Rhys Lloyd(who has not missed a single FG all season) out onto the filed. Lloyd nailed a 55 yard FG that just cleared the crossbar and gave Atlanta a 34-31 victory. With this victory, it is believed that the Falcons have clinched the NFC South.
