Early on it looked like the Saints were looking past the Lions in the season opener. On the Lions first possession, Stafford found Pettigrew for a 4 yd TD pass. On the Saints first possession, Brees was hit while attempting a pass. The tipped pass was easily intercepted. The Lions drove down the field and tacked on a field goal for a 10-0 lead early in the 2nd Quarter.

Brees stayed calm and found Colston for a touchdown from 24 yards out. The teams then traded field goals for a 13-10 Lions' lead. Stafford then connected with Williams from 7 yards out and a 20-10 lead and only 20 seconds left in the 1st half.

Things were looking down for the Saints, but Roby changed the game as he returned the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a score to put the score at 20-17 going into the half.

The Saints tacked on 3 on their first possession of the 2nd half, only to have the Lions answer quickly with a 70 yard strike from Stafford to C. Johnson. The Saints struck right back as Brees found Thomas for a 60 yard score. Hanson hit a 52 yard FG for the Lions to regain the lead at 30-27 before the other game changing play occurred.

The Saints were faced with a 4th and short and had to decide between a 50 yard FG attempt of to go for it. Hartley hit a 49 yard attempt as solid as he could earlier in the game, but hit the crossbar. Not sure if he had the range, the Saints send the offense back out and Thomas burst through the right side for a 33 yard TD run. This put the Saints up for good, 34-30.

In the 4th Brees found Moore from 39 yards out and Thomas added an insurance TD late on a 5 yard run.

Brees finished 17 of 25 for 290 yards, 3 TDs and the one interception. Thomas had 170 yards on 25 carries. Bush had 6 yards on 3 attempts and was sidelined with a hand injury. Shockey had 5 catches for 62 yards. Roman Harper had 2 interceptions to lead the defense.

Stafford had a solid first game as a pro, throwing for 338 yards. However, his 2 interceptions proved costly. Calvin Johnson had 159 yards receiving on 4 catches. Pettigrew had 75 yards on 5 receptions. Lawyer Milloy led the Lions with 6 tackles.
