The Saints looked to faceoff vs the division rival Carolina Panthers for a week 17 matchup to close out the season. The Saints had nothing to play for except pride and to keep their current win streak in tact. Coach Rob decided to rest his starters and keep his gameplan close to the vest should these 2 teams meet in the playoffs so Brees would get the day off as Brian Hoyer would make his 1st start for the Saints.
With the 2nd team defense starting for the Saints the Panthers took the opening kickoff and methodically moved the ball at will en route to a Cam Newton to AJ Green TD strike where the Panthers enjoyed a quick 7-0 lead. That momentum would however be short lived as Joeseph Morgan would return the kickoff back 97 yards for a TD and a tie game. The Panthers offense then stalled on the next possession as the Saints added a 54 yard FG to go up 10-7. The Saints with all the momentum in front of their home crowd then got a big play on defense as Chris Chaimberlain picked off Cam Newton giving the Saints the ball at the Carolina 38 yard line. Hoyer would convert on a few 3rd down and shorts as Jimmy Graham would finish the drive on a 14 yard pass from Hoyer for a TD and a 17-7 lead. The Panthers however rufused to quit as Cam Newton with under 2 minutes left led the Panthers to a quick scoring strike to Steve Smith to cut into the lead 17-14 at the half.
The Saints got the ball to open the 2nd half and they would control the ball for the entire 3rd Quarter converting on 7 3rd down coversions including a hope pass to Nick Toon that looked for sure to be picked off somehow came down with it to keep the drive alive. Eventually the Saints would finish the drive with a TD pass from Hoyer to Ivory for a 24-14 lead with 6 minutes remaining. The Panthers once again showed how quickly they can move the ball down the field as they made it to the New Orleans 15 yard line but they wer stopped short at the 7 on 3rd down and elected to kick a FG and make it a 1 possession game 24-17 with 2:30 to go. The Saints elected to send Colston into the game on a 3rd and 12 with 2 minutes left and the Panthers down to 1 timeout. Hoyer would indeed connect with Colston for a 31 yard pass to convert and run the clock all the way down to :25. Cam Newton would get 1 lst chance but would be picked off to end the game as the Saints backups get the job done as they win their 8th game in a row and finish the season 11-5.
