Charlotte, NC -- In their first matchup of the season the Saints traveled to Charlotte to take on the Carolina Panthers. The Saints knew coming into this one that keeping Cam Newton in the pocket would be their key to victory. They, for the most part, managed to do so. After both teams staled out on their opening drives, the Saints would take the ball down the field and work their way into field goal range. Derek Dimke came on to put the Saints up early 3-0. On Carolina's next possession, Newton would make his first mistake of the day. Looking for Kelvin Benjamin, Newton would instead find Saints DB Keenan Lewis who would take the interception all the way back for the pick six. The Saints would go up 10-0. Newton would then lead his team down the field as the Panthers caught a huge break which definitely felt like a momentum changer. On a 3rd and 20 play, Newton would over throw his receiver but the Saints DE Cam Jordan would be flagged for a roughing the passer call which gave Carolina new life. They would take advantage of it and a few plays later RB Deangelo Williams would take the ball 35 yards for the score. It would be 10-7 at that point. Both teams would add field goals, but the Saints would eventually pull away and take the victory 20-10 over their division foe. Next up for the Saints is a home visit from the undefeated San Francisco 49ers. It is another DL Game of the Week for the Saints, and it should be a great one. Both of these teams are shaping up to be playoff contenders, and this game will prove a lot as to where both teams currently are. The game is tentatively scheduled for a 8/et Wednesday night kickoff.
