(AP) Atlanta, GA- The Saints and Falcons were set to face off in a must win game for the Saints if they had hopes of making the playoffs. The Saints have dominated this series winning the previous 5 matchups and were hoping for an easy win but it would be anything but easy. The Saints jumped out to an early 7-0 lead but the quick strike ability of the Falcons would make the Saints uncomfortable all game long. The Falcons would score on 5 plays of 40 yards or more as Matt Ryan threw for nearly 500 yards on a Saints defense that didnt know what hit them. The Saints were searching for answers as they found themselves trailing 28-20 nearing the end of the 3rd Qtr.
The Saints defense stepped up picking off Matt Ryan 4 times and pinning the Falcons back deep in their own territory. The Falcons made a fatal mistake on a line drive punt where Brody Henry would return the punt for a TD as the Saints would regain the lead 31-28. Once again the lead would not last long as Matt Ryan would toss his 5th TD of the game on a deep pass to TE Eddie Wallace on the sideline as Atlanta would go up 35-31 with just over 3 minutes remaining.
The Saints decided to take a different approach by running the ball and keeping Matt Ryan on the sideline as much as possible and strike at the Blitzing scheme the Falcons seemed to be running in the 2nd half. It paid off as the Falcons had sacked Zabzebski all game long on a Singleback tight formation and this time the Saints would call an off tackle run. Just like the Saints thought it was an all out blitz by the Falcons which left a wide open lane for Mark Ingram who would go untouched for a 30 yard TD run and a 38-35 lead. The Falcons would get 2 more chances but Matty Ice would throw his 3rd and 4th INT's of the game as the Saints hold on.
The Saints finish 11-5 securing one of the final playoff spots for the NFC. Hell of a game Gutcheck64 You will make some noise in the NFC North next year for sure.
