I have 2 pet turtles... I'm always very careful when I clean the tank but, I had a cut on my hand and I got sick. Turtles are notorious for carrying salmonella... I hear salmonella cant survive if you boil the water. Anyone up for some turtle soup?

Geckos are easier to take care of because they don't need a water habitat to survive. I would worry a lot less about a gecko than a red eared slider turtle. Google it if you have any major questions. I don't think it would be a problem. I've had turtles for about 4 years now and this is the first time I've ever had an issue like this.
