    CHARGERS REPORT WEEK 4

The Chargers are coming off a 34-10 thumping at Kansas City. The team remains in 3rd place in the AFC east with a 1-3 record. The Chargers could only manage 168 yards of offense against the stout Chiefs defense. Rivers had a rough day completing 5/12 for 60 yards and 2 interceptions. Rivers was sacked 3 times. The bright spot on offense this week was Ryan Matthews who carried the ball 13 times for 58 yards and 2 receptions for 13 yards. On the defensive side Shawn Phillips led the way with 7 tackles 2 tackles for loss and a sack.

The team is banged up heading into a week 5 Sunday night game in the big easy. The team announced that WR Vincent Brown broke his ankle and the promising young WR out of San Diego State has been placed on IR. TE Antonio Gates also was injured and will be out 4 weeks with a partial ACL tear. With Gates out veteran Tight End Todd Heap will now assume Gates spot with Randy McMichael and rookie TE Ladarius Green filling Gates big shoes.

As of this post the Chargers League Rankings are:

    Total Offense 25 986 yds

    Rush Offense 24 242 yds

    Pass Offense 19 744 yds

    Total Defense 29 1455 yds

    Rush Defense 26 420 yds

    Pass Defense 28 1035 yds

The is plenty of work to be done in San Diego and hopefully this team will come together and start to play some better football.

The Chargers have reached contract extensions with CB Antonio Cason inking him for 4 years and 19.2 M. The Chargers also reached agreement with their talented outside linebacker Shaun Phillips. Phillips will remain a Charger for 4 more years after signing a deal worth 32M. Phillips has posted 22 tackles with 10 tackles for loss , 1 sack , and 1 interception in 4 games this season. Phillips has 59 sacks and 7 interceptions in his 8 year career. Phillips is a big hitter and gets after the QB. Cason who is 26 has posted 8 tackles this season and has 2 picks and a fumble recovery, and 2 defensive TD's. In his 4 year career Cason has 12 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles and 3 TD's. Cason has a high motor and is instrumental in showing our younger corners the ropes. Coach Hardee is relieved to have these 2 players come to terms and remain in San Diego.

The Chargers have agreed to terms with Free Agent DE Arthur Jones. Jones signed a 1 yr deal worth 1.15M. To make room for Jones the Chargers have waived LE Damik Scafe. Jones is a 2nd year player and he played his college ball at Syracuse. Jones has great size and is a bull rush type of DE who can shead blocks and get to the ball carrier or QB with good consistency. Coach Hardee welcomes Jones to the team and believes that Jones will solidify that spot on the DL. Jones will get the start against Denver . In other news the Chargers have suffered another injury, this time it is HB Ryan Mathews. He went down on a hard hit late in the 4th quarter against New Orleans. Mathews suffered a dislocated elbow and will be sidelined for 2 weeks.

    Chargers Report week 5

Chargers are stuffed in New Orleans 38-7

The Chargers traveled to New Orleans for a interconference game with the Saints. This was Coach Hardee's first VFL game and it was a tough day for him and his Chargers. The Chargers were playing it close to the best in the 1st quarter holding the Saints to a touchdown. The Charger offense had a couple of good series but Rivers would turn the ball over 3 times. Rivers was 6-19 with 3 picks on the day and a QB rating at a miserable 13.1. Rivers did hook up with Meachem for 61 yards and it appeared Meachum would get 6 but he was caught by a Saint DB who took a great angle and tackled him inside the 10. Mathews would score the only TD for San Diego when he took it in from 6 yards out to make it 17-7 midway through the 3rd quarter.

The offense had a miserable day against a Saint defense that shut down everything the Chargers tried. The offense managed 168 yards on the day. Mathews had a decent day gaining 68 yards on 14 carries and a TD. Mike Williams led the team in receptions with 3 for 24 yards. The Team announced after the game that they have lost HB Ryan Mathews for 2 weeks with a dislocated elbow.

On defense the team did not play well. The defense gave up way too many yards on the ground and a couple of blown coverages led to Saints TD's . Eric Weddle and Donald Butler led the team in tackles with 7 each. Butler was able to get good penetration and had 3 tackles for loss, Antoine Cason had a pick 2 days after signing a contract extension. But the story of the day was the Saints dominating performance. They were playing great and we just didn't have any answers said coach Hardee. Hats off to them . they were prepared to play and we didn't do a good enough job of getting our team ready to play. Good luck to the Saints the rest of the way. Good job.

    Chargers Aquire Antione Winfield
    [IMG]

The Chargers and Vikings come to agreement after a few days of negoiations and aquire CB Antione Winfield from the Vikings in exchange for DT Cam Thomas and a this years 3rd round selection. Winfield who is 35 can still play at corner and will solidify the position . Winfield has 24 interceptions , 6 sacks, 14 forced fumbles and 2 TD's in his 13 year career. In 5 games this season Winfield has 10 tackles and 1 tackle for loss.

The Chargers sent defensive tackle Cam Thomas who is 25 years old to Minnesota along with their 3rd round selection in next years draft. Thomas had played in 4 games this season and has not registered any stats. Thomas has 34 tackles, and 6 sacks in 2 seasons.
The Chargers want to wish Cam Thomas well as he continues his career in Minnesota and we want to welcome Antione Winfield to sunny San Diego.

VETERAN KICKER NATE KAEDING IS RELEASED

The Chargers announced this evening that they have released kicker Nate Kaeding. Kaeding has been in contract negoiations with the team for a couple of weeks and the two sides were no where near a agreement. The veteran kicker is 30 years old and in his last year of a 6 year deal. Kaeding was 5 out of 6 on FG attempts this season and 10 of 10 on extra points.
The Chargers decided to part ways with Kaeding when the negoiations were at a stalemate and the team needed to free up cap space to re-sign other players.

The Chargers made a move to replace Kaeding when they signed 4th year free agent kicker Conner Barth. He was signed today to a 1 year deal worth 680K. Barth who is 26 has a powerful leg and is 4/4 on FG's this season with a long of 50 yards and 6/6 on extra points. The Chargers feel that they have not lost any talent by signing Barth and at only 26 yrs old Barth has the potential to pass Kaeding in performance. The Chargers wish Kaeding well as he moves on within the league.

Quinton Jammer 3 tackles 1 interception

The Broncos (0-4) played the Chargers(1-4) in a sold out Qualcom Stadium on Monday Night Football. The Broncos opened the scoring with a FG and both teams were playing good defense and it was 3-0 Broncos at the end of the 1st quarter. The Chargers would take the lead early in the 2nd quarter when Rivers found Mike Williams on a 11 yard TD hookup to make it 7-3 Chargers. The Broncos would answer right before halftime on a Manning to Stokley 12 yard TD pass to make it 10-7 Broncos at halftime.

The 3rd quarter was a field position game with both teams playing good defense. The Broncos would tack on 3 points early in the 4th quarter on a 48 yard Matt Prater FG to make it 13-10 Broncos after 3 quarters. The Broncos would add another FG to make it 16-10. The Chargers would get a golden opportunity to win the game after they stopped Denver just inside our 50 and forced the punt. Rivers and the San Diego offense would get the ball with about 80 yards to go for the win. The offense went to work and moved the ball downfield into the redzone with just under a minute left. it was 2nd down from the Broncos 28 with 42 seconds left when Rivers took the snap dropped back and looked to his 2nd option on the play Mike Williams. Oh, he was open with Bailey playing off by 10 yards in zone coverage . Rivers saw it and threw the pass to Williams , but Bailey appeared out of no where to jump the pass and go untouched 93 yards to upset the Chargers on Monday Night Football. The Broncos would go for 2 after scoring and converted making it 24-10.

The team played well enough on defense to win but it was turnovers with Rivers throwing 3 picks leading to 10 Broncos points off turnovers that cost the chargers the game today.

Coach Hardee commented in his post game press conference that Rivers must eliminate turnovers ." I think he is trying to do too much and create some big plays. He is forcing some balls into tight coverage and it simply isn't acceptable."" We need to use this bye week to iron out our offense and get on track"

The Chargers were hurt again this week by the injury bug with LOLB Shaun Phillips suffering Broken ribs in the 2nd quarter. Phillips will be sidelined for 2 weeks.

With the win the Broncos get out of the AFC west celler and are now 1-5. The Chargers fall to 1-5.
The Chargers are now in a 5 game losing streak and have fallen to the bottom of the AFC West at 1-5.
