The Carolina Panthers open their season with a win in a wild affair over the 49ers. The Panthers open the game with a 102 yard kick return by rookie CB J. Dyer to take the pressure of the offense and give the defense a lead to work with. San Francisco ended the 1st quarter scoring with a 51 yard FG. The offense struggled a bit during the half without HB D. Williams when he was knocked from the game for a couple quarters. Clausen managed to get the Panthers on the board with a 7 yard scramble for a TD to make it 14-3. Panthers rookie WR L. Waiters made an immediate impact with a 73 yard touchdown catch to put Carolina up 21-3. But the 49ers came right back moments later with bomb to TE V. Davis for 77 yards and the TD. Carolina manage to get a field goal in before the end of the quarter for a halftime lead of 24-10. San Francisco controls the 3rd quarter opening with a 99 yard kick off return by WR T. Ginn and a 1 yard run by N. Norris to tie the game up a 24 after three. The Panthers recovered a fumble after fumbling themselves inside the 10 and had to settle for a FG to go up 27-24. With about 5 minutes in the game, the 49ers was faced with a 4 & 10 from their own 29 and chose to go for it but failed to convert putting the Panthers in prime scoring position. They would capitalize on the short field ended with a D. Williams TD of 3 yards. The fight in the 49ers wasn't dead yet and they moved down the field and scored from 4 yards out on a pass to WR Crabtree. With two timeouts and good defense the 49ers managed to get the ball back with a minute in the game. San Francisco connected on a couple of medium passes before Panthers new FS Bethea picked the ball off to secure the win 34-31. The win was costly for the Panthers as they lost their #1 pick MLB T. Ridder to a broken forearm for 10 weeks. Good Game Troy! That was definitely a nerve wrecking game! Good Luck the rest of the season!
