Coach Name: Alex Richards
Offensive Playbook: Jim Harbaugh
Offensive Scheme: Balance Offense
Defensive Playbook: Jim Harbaugh
Defensive Scheme: Base 3-4
In a stunning move the 49ers have fired Jim Harbaugh and hired an unknown coach, Alex Richards.
Before the game against the Packers the 49ers traded Ted Ginn to the Dolphins in exchange for 2 draft picks
After the trade the 49ers signed LOLB Emmanuel Acho (68 OVR, 21 yrs old)
The 49ers lost a very competitive match up against the Packers in Week 1. The Niners were driving with less then a minute left in the 4th when Alex Smith threw an INT in Packers territory when all they needed was a field goal to force overtime. After the game Coach Richards had this to say, "Our guys fought hard today, the defense was what we expected and we made it hard for the Packers offense to score a lot of points. Credit Culliver with a pick 6 today, that was huge. Alex Smith had a tough game, he had a nice TD pass to Moss but other then that it was tough against an average passing defense. He needs to step it up if he wants to keep his job."
ESPN was talking about Richards' comments and thought he went a little overboard with almost threatening Smith but the 49ers knew they were hiring a coach that told the truth and what was on his mind. We will see if Smith is the QB throughout the entire game against the Lions this weekend, another average passing defense.
Stats through Week 1
Alex Smith: 18-31, 217 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 76.9 rating
Frank Gore: 19 att, 76 yards, 1 TD, 4 avg, 2 fumbles
Randy Moss: 3 rec, 69 yards, 1 TD
Vernon Davis: 4 rec, 57 yards
Patrick Willis: 8 tackles, 1 INT, 1 FF
Chris Culliver: 3 tackles, 1 INT, 1 TD
Justin Smith: 2 tackles, 1 sack
Passing yards: 217
Rushing yards: 83
Passing yards allowed: 262
Rushing yards allowed: 58
After not taking his coach's words lightly Alex Smith stepped his game up against the Detroit Lions. Smith only threw for 141 yards but he had 3 TD's and 0 INT to lead his team to victory. One of those TD's was to Randy Moss who now has 2 receiving touchdowns on the year as he is trying to prove to people he can still play. The running game was pretty good this week as well with Gore rushing for over 100 yards and a TD.
The defense shut down the high powered offense of Detroit, holding them to just 3 points. They forced 5 turnovers including 3 INT's. Including Culliver's second INT of the season. The rush defense held the Lions to just 3 yards on the ground and only 193 through the air.
Next up for the 49ers- @ Minnesota
Post Game Interview
Media- How do you feel Smith did today?
Richards- Alex? He did good today. He showed me something today by stepping up his game from last week. He made the right reads and protected the ball. I am proud of him but there is still room for improvement.
Media- What was the game plan against the Lions and Stafford
Richards- We wanted to make them one dimensional and take away the run. I feel like we did a great job of that and they were forced to throw the majority of the game so we knew what was coming and adjusted accordingly.
Media- Do you feel like your defense is playing at its peak?
Richards- No way! We have way more to work on here. There is always room for improvement but we are making the right strides. We need to get more pressure on the QB, mainly the Smith boys need to get in there and knock around the QB.
Media- How do you feel about the Vikings?
Richards- I feel like they are a tough young team that have nothing to lose and want to prove to the world they are better then expected. They will give us their best shot and we need to be prepared. That dome will be rocking and our offense needs to be ready for it. Should be a great game.
29-60, 358 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT, 82.4 QB rating
38 att, 189 yards, 2 TD, 5.0 avg
6 Rec, 142 yards, 2 TD, 23.7 avg
15 tackles, 3 TFL, 1 INT, 1 FF
4 tackles, 1 TFL, 2 INT, 1 Defl
Passing Yards allowed- 224 yds/g
Rushing Yards allowed- 29 yds/g
Passing Yards- 281 yds/g
Rushing Yards 107.5 yds/g
Week 3 Preview:
In a match-up set between two 1-1 teams the clear favorite should be the 49ers but not so fast, the Vikings have been surprising so far this year on the offensive side of the ball. The Niners know in order to win they will need to stop AD (Adrian Peterson) as he is the vocal point of the offense. They are also hoping to provide more pressure and make Ponder move around in the pocket. On offense 49ers need to keep control of the ball and not turn the ball over. Also they need to get the run game going more, only averaging 107.5 yards per game on the ground is not where they want to be. This should be an exciting game in Minnesota this Sunday.
Good luck majesty95
49ers Beat Vikings, Head to New York Next
After beating the Vikings 27-10 last week after a strong showing by Alex Smith and Frank Gore the 49ers are on their way to New York to face the pesky Jets. The 49ers defense will be key this week, if they can stop the Jets offense they will win the game.
Game recap will be posted after the game
Before the game against the Jets the 49ers announced they resigned FS Dashon Goldson to a 4 year contract.
After another terrible performance from Alex Smith (3 INT) and another late pick to lose the game the 49ers will be switching their QB's next week. Colin Kaepernick will be the new starting QB going forward.
Coach, Talk about your decision to start Kaepernick this week.
Richards- We feel like as a team the offense is more dynamic with Colin as QB, he can run and also has big arm that we open to show off this week against the Bills. I think it is a good time to get him some playing time and let him grow as a player.
How do you feel about lost weeks loss?
Richards- We shot ourselves in the foot. We made mistakes we normally don't make and we need to work on that. That loss will just motivate this team to get better. We have worked hard this week and hopefully it will pay off.
The Bills are 0-4 this season, do you feel like this game is a lock?
Richards- This is the NFL. Any team can win any given game. We have prepared for this game and we will give it our all. There is no let up in the NFL, you have to prepare for every game like its the Super Bowl.
Kaepernick Earns First Win
The week after a QB change in San Fran, the Niners came out with a bang beating the Bills 34-14. The win came on great rushing, defense, and timely passing. The 49ers showed why they are the #1 defense in the league by out-gaining the Bills 379-157, allowing only 20 yards on the ground and 3 first downs the whole game. The physical 49ers defense also had 2 sacks (1 by Aldon Smith and Ahmad Brooks) and a fumble recovery after a hard hit by a hard hit by Dashon Goldson knocked the ball lose and Carlos Rogers recovered it. They also had 2 INT including a pick 6 by pro-bowler Carlos Rogers. All and all it was a great day for the Red and Gold on defense.
On the offensive side of the ball there was a big change this week and that was Alex Smith sitting on the bench in favor of the 2nd year QB, Colin Kaepernick. Coach Richards took a lot of heat for the quick trigger of Alex Smith but it worked out...so far.. Now, CK didn't have great numbers but he got the job done. With a QB rating of only 61.3 and completion percentage of 38% CK helped the 49ers win instead of hurting them in a loss. He threw for 210 yards for 2 TD's and 2 INT's, still some room for improvement for the young QB. Both of the touchdown passes went to Randy Moss who had 4 receptions for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns. Another TD came from the veteran Frank Gore who had his best game of the young season. Gore had 163 yards on 24 carries (6.8 avg) with a touchdown.
If Gore can keep running the ball the way he has, the defense keeps showing why they are the best in the league, and Kaepernick can go and improve, the Niners are going somewhere with this team.
Next- New York Giants
Player of the Game- Frank "The Tank" Gore- 24 att, 163 yards, 1 TD, 6.8 average
Pregame Interview (Week 6)
Coach, Kaepernick threw 2 INT last week, are you still good with him as your starting QB??
Richards- I knew when we as a coaching staff decided to make him the starter that there would be growing pains involved in the process. The important thing is he did the things that had to be done in order to win. All I care about is winning the game, stats don't matter.
What was most impressive to you about last week's win?
Richards- I would have to say our offensive line. They have really been stepping up lately and they are gelling very well together. Gore has had over 150 yards rushing the last 2 games and that speaks volumes about our line
You guys are facing the team that knocked you out of the playoffs last year, is this game extra special for you and your team?
Richards- I would be lying if I said that we weren't thinking about it at all. Our team wants revenge in the worst way and this game is just the starting point of that. The players also want to prove that last year wasn't a fluke and we are one of the best teams in the league. It should be a great battle this weekend in San Fran.
Week 6 Preview
After last weeks beat down of the Buffalo Bills the 3-2 49ers look to continue their winning ways against defending Super Bowl Champs, New York Giants (1-4). The 49ers are looking for revenge after last years NFC Championship loss to New York.
The rushing game has been key for the 49ers recently, rushing for over 300 yards combined the last 2 games and they will need to do more of the same to win this week. The defense also had its best outing last week allowing just 7 points with 3 turnovers. If the 49ers want to think about winning this game they have to stop Eli Manning and the high powered offense of the Giants.
Player to Watch- Colin Kaepernick. It his 2nd career starting after throwing for 210 yards with 2 TD's but also had 2 INT and only completing 38% of his passes last week. If CK can keep the turnovers to a minimum and make the throws on 3rd downs to help keep the ball moving the 49ers should have an easy time winning this game
Gore Leads the Way to a 49ers Victory
Frank Gore made a strong case for why he has been the MVP so far this year. Gore had his 3rd straight 150+ yard rushing game with a season high 209 yards and 3 TD's including a 65 yard TD run. The offensive line again proved why they might be the best in the league as well. The offense couldn't of looked anybody on the day of a rematch of the NFC Championship game. The 49ers were looking to make a statement to the world and they did just that. They aren't just a strong defensive of team anymore, their offense is very powerful as well. Colin Kaepernick in his 2nd career start looked much improved from last week throwing for 238 yards with 3 TD's. He showed poise in the pocket and making the big throw when necessary, he is going to be special folks. Who has been the best wide receiver in the NFL the past decade? Randy Moss and everyone thought he was done, well he is proving to everyone why he is still the best in the game. He caught 2 more TD passes.
The defense had another 3 takeaway performance with 3 INT's. Carlos Rogers had 2 of the 3 and Chris Culliver with the other. The defense shut down the Giants running game only allowing 67 yards on the ground, most of which came in the last 3 minutes of the game. For the 2nd week in a row the defense forced 3 turnovers. They are showing why they should be the most feared defense in the league.
49ers Rally Late to Win 3rd Straight
Colin Kaepernick has started three games for the Niners this year and in those games the 49ers are 3-0. He hasn't had the best games at QB but he makes the throws when he needs it to win the game. And Sunday against the Seahawks he did that again.
At the start of the 4th quarter the 49ers were down 24-14 but that didn't phase Kaep. To start the quarter and him and Frank Gore drove the 49ers down the field which ended with a Frank Gore TD run. The 49ers proceeded to stop the Seahawks and got the ball on their own 5 yard line. After two failed played it was 3rd down and 9 when CK dropped back and threw a bullet to an open Randy Moss who made a move, broke a tackle and scored a 94 yard TD to put the 49ers on top 28-24. Later the Frank Gore would run for 60+ yard TD for his 2nd of the day to give the 49ers the 35-24 victory over their divisional rival.
The defense was all over Russell Wilson today dropping him for 5 sacks including three from the 2nd year linebacker, Aldon Smith. They only forced 1 INT this week by Carlos Rogers who now has 5 picks on the year.
The first three quarters were very sloppy for the 49ers, letting up big runs and throwing INT including one for a touchdown. The defense needs to start playing a full 4 quarters if they want to win this division. Also Kaepernick needs to make smarter decisions throwing the football, he has the tools to be great.
Winning the opening game against the division is huge for the 49ers, with the Cardinals losing it put the Niners in sole possession of first place. Next week the 49ers travel to Arizona to play the 2nd place Cardinals, if the Niners win it will put them in a great position to win the division. Should be a huge game.
Moss had a 94 yard TD to put the 49ers on top in the 4th.
Interesting Stats (Week 8)
Frank Gore has had at least 150 yards in each of the last five games.
Frank Gore has at least 1 touchdown in every game this season.
In every game this year Frank Gore has at least 1 run of 20 or more yards
Randy Moss has scored a TD 6 out of the 8 games this year.
49ers Increase Division Lead With Win
There isn't much else to say about Frank Gore than MVP because that is exactly what he has been through the first 8 weeks of the season. With Sunday's 196 yard performance Gore now has over 1,100 yards rushing on the season. At this rate Gore is on pace to break E. Dickerson's single season rushing record of 2,105 yards. He scored a late TD to put away the Arizona Cardinals and increase the division lead to 2 games with 8 games to play. 49ers won their 4th straight game.
Arizona put up a dog fight and kept the game close throughout the whole game, scoring a late TD to make the final 31-28. 49ers started off fast with a TD pass from Kaepernick to V. Davis on the first drive on the game. At the end of the 1st half the 49ers and Cardinals exchanged quick TD's. Arizona scored with 31 seconds left in the half and on the next kick off L. James took the ball to the 29 yard line in Cardinal territory then CK threw a strike to M. Manningham for a TD. In the second half Arizona scored 3 TD's but that wasn't enough as Frank "The Tank" Gore ran for 2 TD's in the 4th quarter to seal the deal. CK had his first game without throwing an INT which was a huge reason why San Francisco won this game. The Niners protected the ball the whole game.
On defense the 49ers yet again had another 3 INT day, 1 from Spillman, Whitner, and Culliver. The D played great in the first half but a couple crucial TD's up in the 2nd half. They gave up more yards then they have all year and it was disappointing for them.
Next up for the 49ers is a bye week then they play St. Louis at home. Should be a good resting period for the Niners in order to make the playoff run in the 2nd half.
Player of the Game- Frank Gore- 196 yards, 2 fourth quarter TD's
After a LONG bye week the 49ers are anxious to get back on the field and continue their winning ways. San Francisco will be hosting the St. Louis Rams this week and what looks to be an interesting match up despite the records. The St. Louis Rams just got a new coach who looks to be one of the best in the league so it will should be a hard fought, tough game at The Stick. Good luck Jeremy
1st Half Recap
The second half of the season is upon use and a lot went down in San Fran the first 8 games of the year. After a 2-2 record to start the year coach, Alex Richards decided it was time for the young gun, Colin Kaepernick to take over under center. Since then the 49ers have been 4-0 winning games in decisive fashion. Kaepernick has been eased into the offense so far and has had his mistakes but overall he has done what was needed of him to win games, if he can continue that he will be starting in this league for a long time. While the Niners have had a first year starter then have been heavily reliant on Frank Gore. Through the first eight games of the year, Gore has 1,150 yards and 13 TD's. Gore is currently on pace to break the single season rushing record. With Gore at his best and a young exciting QB the 49ers look to continue their success in the 2nd half of the season and go deep into the playoffs.
The defense has been very wishy-washy this year so far. Some games they are dominant like against the Lions and Vikings, other games they have been bad like against the Jets, Cardinals, and Seahawks. If the 49ers want to continue winning games they need to be more consistent on the defensive side of the ball. The passing defense is their biggest weakness on the defensive side of the ball, ranked 30th in the league. Even though they have 18 total INT's, they only have 15 total sacks. If they want a better defense they need to get more pressure on the QB.
