Bobcats hold off Rockets to win MAC Championship

Ohio looked like they were about to run away with the game after the first quarter. After scoring on their first drive, the Bobcats forced a turnover and quickly scored again to go up 14-0 with 3:51 remaining in the first quarter.

Toledo's defense, featuring two players up for major awards this year, finally came to life after that. They forced three turnovers, the Bobcats' highest total of the season, and several more stops. neither team scored again until the Rockets kicked a field goal with 28 seconds remaining in the first half, putting them right in the game as they had elected to kickoff in the first quarter.
The defense let its guard down badly after that, and allowed Chase Cochran to get open on the seam running four verticals for a 52 yard touchdown with only 7 seconds remaining. This was the blow that finally seemed to take some of the fuel out of the Rockets' engines.

Both teams failed to score in the 3rd quarter, and the Rockets turned on their afterburners to score right at the beginning of the 4th, making it a 21-10 game. Ohio was finally able to put a drive together after that, and were able to ice the game with a touchdown with 3:53 remaining.

The Rockets came into the game focused on making the Bobcats beat them with the first option, and to limit explosive plays by not allowing any options to get as far as the second or third phase. They were successful at forcing the first option to carry the running game, but they weren't ready for back up HB Ryan Boykin to explode for 235 yard on 23 carries, and earn himself player of the game honors.

The Rockets also seemed to play away from their strengths on offense. Toledo QB Terrance Owens had thrown for the second most yards in the country going into the game, but after throwing an early interception, finished the game with only 6 passing attempts.

It was well known going into the game that Toledo's head coach had some very important family matters to attend to after the game, and there are rumors he may have run the ball more than he typically does in order to get to those matters faster.
