24vs21 He did it to Texas Gilbert redeems himself (kind of) in 24-21 upset of Longhorns “It was a game SMU had no business winning,” said Coach Boom in the post-game press conference. “We had our opportunities and we didn’t capitalize, but sometimes you get help from unlikely sources and ask questions later.” Trailing 21-17 with 11 seconds left and at the Texas 10 yard line, SMU QB Garrett Gilbert threw what appeared to be a game-ending INT only for the Texas player to subconsciously lateral the ball to no one in particular, allowing SMU to recover at the two. Gilbert would then find All-American candidate WR Der’rikk Thompson for a two yard TD to put the Mustangs up 24-21. Adding to the late-game drama, Texas would go on to complete a Hail Mary attempt, only for the Texas WR to fall just short of the end zone. The game between the two Texas schools saw the Longhorns go up 7-0 on a short TD run by QB David Ash after finding no receivers open. Not to be outdone, the Mustangs responded on Thompson’s first TD reception of the game midway through the second quarter, tying the game at seven. The score would remain tied until late in the third quarter when Ash was sacked and fumbled, allowing DE Zach Wood to pounce on the ball and make his way into the endzone for a 14-7 SMU lead. Texas would respond, and do so quickly, as Ash found WR Mike Davis wide open for a 50 yard TD pass, resulting from a mix-up in communication by the SMU secondary. The Mustangs would not go away, but would be forced to settle for a 19 yard FG to take a 17-14 lead early in the fourth. Texas would rally, and after being contained most of the day by the Mustang defense, the running game would finally break through to put the Longhorns back in the lead at 21-17, setting up the dramatic ending. MexiRican35, You definitely had that game won. Outside of that fact, it was close game throughout. I felt that I had to carefully choose my plays at all times. SMU Mustangs Texas Longhorns QB Garrett Gilbert – 27/34, 234 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT QB David Ash – 12/17, 219 yards, TD, 2 INT HB Rishaad Wimbley – 8 car, 29 yards, long 10; 5 rec, 31 yards, long 16 HB J Gray – 12 car, 115 yards, TD, long 42 WR Der’rikk Thompson – 9 rec, 111 yards, 2 TD, long 19 WR Mike Davis – 7 rec, 116 yards, TD, long 50 WR Jeremy Johnson – 5 rec, 49 yards DE M Brown – 3 tack, 2 TFL, 2 sack DE Andrew McCleneghen – 3 tack, 2 TFL, 2 sack, FF Turnovers – 4 (-2)
Ya I wish that the game would go into freeze cam whenever a turnover happen. I was hitting the left bumber to swat not realizing my DB already had the ball in his hands.

USC 38 Stanford 10 Well, Cheez has figured out some pretty good run defense with the Cardinal, as he held Redd to 55 yards on 15 carries with a new double super secret scheme. Unfortunately the new scheme still needs work, as it was very vulnerable to the play action pass. Max Wittek was 16-18 for 254 yards and 4 TDs on the day, with many passes going to Marqise Lee (9 catches, 172 yards and 2 scores). Good game Cheez.
Week 12 Boise State 27 West Virginia 24 Boise took a quick 14-0 lead in this game but seemed to ease of the gas, allowing WVU to tie it up with 0:40 left in the half. But Boise moved the ball very quickly, and a 26-yard FG gave them a 17-14 lead. Boise added a FG in the 3rd to go up 6, but WVU responded with a long drive, taking a 1-point lead, 21-20. After a quick Boise punt, WVU was able to move deep into Boise territory, threatening to take an 8 point lead. But the defense held, forcing a FG with 5:32 left, 24-20 WVU. Boise drove the field on their next drive, only to throw a pick near the goal line. The defense stopped WVU and forced a punt, giving Boise good field position. Boise had 1st and goal with 2:00 left down 4 and needed to make sure they could take time off the clock and score a TD. After 2 runs, Southwick hit WR Kirby Moore on a 7-yard flag route, to take the lead with :49 left and the game. QB Joe Southwick - 15-26 for 220 yards, 3 TD, INT, 2 carries for 10 yards HB Jay Ajayi - 22 carries for 93 yards HB Derrick Thomas - 8 carries for 34 yards WR Matt Miller - 5 receptions for 45 yards, 2 TD WR Kirby Moore - 3 receptions for 77 yards, TD TE Holden Huff - 5 receptions for 61 yards Week 14 Boise State 24 Oklahoma 17 This game was all about ball-control offense. The first quarter and a half were consumed by 4 drives, all ending in TDs, game tied 14-14. OU was able to force an OU punt and score before half, taking a 21-14 halftime lead, getting the ball at half. The teams had fun driving and punting in this one, and an OU FG 21-17 at the end of the 3rd. Boise's defense didn't force any turnovers in this one but their 4th quarter defense was able to bend but not break, and a late FG game them a more comfortable 7 point lead with 2:09 left. OU drove the field before stalling on 4th down late, giving Boise the win. QB Joe Southwick - 10-13 for 129 yards, TD, 3 carries for 12 yards, TD HB Jay Ajayi - 22 carries for 96 yards, TD HB Derrick Thomas - 3 carries for 25 yards FB Connor Peters - 5 carries for 27 yards WR Matt Miller - 3 receptions for 37 yards, TD WR Kirby Moore - 2 receptions for 33 yards TE Holden Huff - 4 receptions for 52 yards So with these 2 tough wins, Boise improved from 5-4 to 7-4 and now has a big game with SMU to cap the season with all the recruits coming to visit.
At this point, the Longhorns were playing for pride. After two dismal losses all but shot their chance at a Big XII berth, it was out west to Cali to face da Bears. The Bears that are Golden. The Bears offense looked dull at first. First play from scrimmage, QB Kline was picked off by LB Jenkins. Next play, Bergeron surges his way into the endzone. After trading FG's, Kline was picked again, this time by LB Hicks. The next Longhorn TD was made by WR Shipley from 29 yards out. After a trade of TD's, Kline threw a hail mary as the half ended. A tip drill ensued, with WR Lawler making the catch. It was Horns 24-13 at the half, but Cal had the momentum and was still in it. That momentum would fade on the opening drive. Ship beat press coverage on third and long, and waltzed his way into the endzone from 25 yards out. Cal drives into Texas territory, then lo and behold lightning strikes again. DB Scott pulls an SMU (Boom29). He picks off a pass just as I'm trying to switch players and swat. So he throws it to no one in general, and Cal recovers. And just like last time, a TD is the result from it. But the Cal D could not contain the Texas rushing game. HB Gray scores from 17 yards, throwing guys off his back and carrying them in, too. Cal would get a FG, making it 31-20. With time running low for a comeback, Cal would try and fail at an onside attempt. Gray looked to put the game out of reach. He looked bottled up for a no gain, but stayed behind his hogs, found an opening outside, and scored from 31 yards. Cal would get another TD, but another failed onside would end the game for them. Texas 45 - Cal 30
GG... My DB's are young, My OL are young... My LB's are completely unaware of their surroundings 90% of the time. Texas had too much talent in this one.
Boise 24 SMU 21 Boise won the toss and kicked off to start the game. SMU passed the ball well on their first drive before MLB Blake Renaud made a nice INT in the middle of the field. QB Joe Southwick hit WR Kirby Moore on the sideline and after 2 or 3 SMU defenders missed tackles, Moore fell into the endzone to go up 7-0. SMU resumed where they left off on the last drive and capped a 75-yard TD drive with a perfect pass to Jeremy Johnson in the corner of the endzone from 14 yards out. Boise had another nice drive, but this time Southwick made a mistake, throwing to the TE a second too late, turning the ball over fairly deep in SMU territory. Neither team would score in the 2nd quarter with SMU getting closest, missing a 48-yard FG, 7-7 half. On Boise's 1st drive of the 2nd half, they scored, and were able to force another SMU punt. On the next drive, Southwick hit TE Holden Huff on a PA pass that was very close to being knocked down or picked to take a 21-7 lead late in the 3rd. Boise added another FG with 5:30 to go up 17, but SMU wasn't done. They were able to score 2 TD's easily with Boise secondary not having a clue what was going on. Unfortunately for the Ponies, their onside kick with 1:14 didn't make it the 10 yards and Boise ran the clock out. Boise QB Joe Southwick - 8-12 for 200 yards, 2 TD, INT HB Jay Ajayi - 20 carries for 106 yards, TD WR Kirby Moore - 3 receptions for 138 yards, TD TE Holden Huff - 3 receptions for 32 yards, TD SMU QB G Gilbert - 24-35 for 320 yards, 3 TD, INT HB R Wimbley - 5 carries for 13 yards, 2 receptions for 16 yards, TD WR J Johnson - 7 receptions for 121 yards, TD WR D Thompson - 7 receptions for 80 yards, TD WR K Holman - 5 receptions for 79 yards
USC 28 UCLA 16 In a game that was plagued by bad QB play (the two signal callers threw 3 INT's each), UCLA came out in this game playing some possessed ball on the lines of scrimmage. On offense, the Bruin OL was opening holes and allowing their HB's to gain 3-5 yards before Trojan defenders knew what was happening, and on defense the Bruin front 7 was shedding blockers like ragdolls. This looked like a game that UCLA had in their sights until a very fortunate (or unfortunate, depending on your point of view) turn of events with less than 10 seconds to play in the first half. USC had just scored to close the gap to a 10-7 UCLA lead, and less than 90 seconds remained in the half. UCLA's QB was sacked on a 2nd down pass play, and Coach Dru had his team calling time outs for what would likely just be a prayer punt return. Ultimately, USC got a stop and had the ball at around the 30 yard line after the punt return. QB Max Wittek threw a 15 yard post pattern into what appeared to be double coverage on WR George Farmer, with the CB in man coverage on Farmer's hip and the FS coming down to lay the wood on him after the catch. Wittek made a terrible throw, to the outside shoulder on the inside post, but got VERY lucky when Farmer grabbed the ball before it hit the CB, and the FS seemed to knock the CB aside allowing Farmer to race 71 yards for a crazy TD with 1 second left in the half. USC went to halftime up 14-10, and got the ball to start the 3rd. After some more turnover fun, the game ended with a 12 point USC win. Good game recchem2000.
Actually, we need to Ken Welsch to start doing recaps period. He hasn't done one since week 2 when he played BBJ. Ken, it's a requirement in here to at least post a brief few sentences about each game, especially the user games you win. Thanks.
Thanks for the reminder. TSO was down last night. Baylor 17 TCU 27 The Big 12 conference concluded their regular season in Fort Worth yesterday, when the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs defeated the Baylor University Bears 27-17. The game ended Baylor's quest for the Big 12 Conference Championship Game; Baylor came into the game needing a win to beat Oklahoma State in Division A. TCU clinched their spot in the Championship a couple of weeks ago. The game started with a long, efficient TCU drive, capped with a 1-yard TD run by QB Trevon Boykin. Baylor responded with a field goal on their initial drive. Then the TCU defense clamped down for the vast majority of the 2nd and 3rd quarters, not allowing the Bears to score. Said Head TCU Coach Art Vandalay, "Well, I thought the defense played well, but let's face it: the Bears are talented but when (RB Lache) Seastrunk went down with an injury, it was a little easier to defend without their best weapon out there." The injury made the Bears throw more than they normally do, which led to four interceptions by the TCU defense. Meanwhile, Seastrunk did return in the 4th quarter, but by then it was too little too late. One piece of contriversy arose with approximately 4 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. The Bears defense sacked QB Boykin on third down, leaving the Frogs with 4th and 18 from the 36 yard line. The Frogs wanted to go for it, which drew the ire of the Baylor coaching staff. Coach Vandalay responded, "It was certainly not a situation where we were trying to run up the score or anything. We had three options: 1) go for it, which I admit is a very low percentage play, 2) kick a 54 yard field goal, which is, quite frankly, out of the range of our kicker, or 3) try to "coffin corner" a punt with only 35 yards to work with, which again is something our punter has yet to be able to accomplish at all. We wanted to go for it so we could continue to run clock and, if we could even break the 20-yard line, we would leave them with worse field position than a simple touchback. At the time, I simply did not think that punting "felt" like the right play at the time." The Frogs did end up punting the ball for a touchback, and the Bears took the ball and scored on a quick, efficient 80-yard drive. The win leaves TCU meeting Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship next week. Meanwhile, both TCU and Baylor will be going to bowl games; those matchups will be out soon.
I have posted recaps of each user matchup, just hadn't had a user win since before my loss to Texas (my game vs Stanford was simmed because of schedule conflicts). I didn't realize I had to do a recap of each and every game; It didn't seem like most of the other coaches here do that. My bad.
Washington 28 USC 14 After an unstoppable performance in their first meeting, USC threw 2 INTs and a pick 6 early in the game to give washington a big lead. USC forced a handful of stops but 4 INTs on the day and a turnover on downs after a goalline stand kept the trojans from drawing even in the second half. Shaq Thompson had a big day for UW, with 2 INTs and a 73 yard INT return. Sankey continues to convert 1 yard TD runs(3) and piled up another 114 yards on 23 carries. gg dru, You were one 3rd and 8 stop away from having the ball down 7 in the forth. It was alot closer than you perhaps made it out to be.
Yeah, it was a fun game, I was more frustrated with those 2 drops that cost me a first down than anything. But you can't win throwing as many picks as I did last night. Good win WGW, I had a feeling I couldn't repeat what I pulled off in week 2 (or 3 or whenever we played).
USC 38 Miami 35 The Trojans win a barn burner in the Orange Bowl, in a game that saw 1,150 yards of offense between the two teams. Max Wittek would get benched after throwing 3 early picks, and Cody Kessler would come to the rescue. USC WR Marqise Lee capped off what may be his final collegiate game with 277 yards on 8 catches with an 80 yard TD.
Statisically wise... it really doesnt matter... Lord knows I shouldnt hear any complaining the rest of '14
