After the first 2 weeks of the season, there has been plenty of movement among the top 10. If this is any indication of how the season will be, we are looking to have yet another great competitive season. All in all there are 5 new teams in this week’s power rankings including a new number one and a jump from unranked to #5 on the list. With that being said, I bring to you this week’s power rankings… 1) St. Louis Rams(Prev: 2) – Up one spot from last week, the Rams take over as the new #1 in the Power Rankings. Leading the league in points scored after 2 games, the Rams have the look of a team that is out to avenge their Super Bowl loss and is putting the entire league on notice. The offseason pickup of Vince Young is proving to be huge as Vince has thrown for close to 200 yards and ran for 59 while scoring 5 times in limited duty. Sam Bradford is still the starter and has thrown for over 300 yards and 2 touchdowns himself while Steven Jackson has added another 200 yard and 5 tds on the ground. Look out league, the Rams appear to be on a mission. 2) Indianapolis Colts(Prev: 3) – Also up one spot from last week, the Colts land at #2 after wins against the Texans and defending champ Jets. The stats don’t jump out at you but this team simply knows how to win. The Colts defense is only giving up 22 points a game which is good for 5th in the league in this young season but as usual, this team will go as far as the right arm of Peyton Manning leads them. 3) Dallas Cowboys(Prev: 4) – Coming off two impressive wins from playoff teams last season the Cowboys come in at #3. The emergence of speedster Kevin Ogletree has proved huge as this offense is clicking on all cylinders to start the season. The defense isn’t too shabby either as they currently rank 3rd in points, 9th in yards and 5th in passing yards. Is Americas team back? We shall see… 4) Tampa Bay Buccaneers(Prev: 5) – After trading away franchise QB Josh Freeman in the offseason many wondered if make-a-wish kid Robert You would be able to handle the job. You hasn’t disappointed thus far racking up over 350 yards and 3 touchdowns with help from a solid run game led by Jonathan Stewart’s 200 plus yards and 2 touchdowns. The Bucs calling card continues to be defense where they rank 1st in points, 2nd in yards, 3rd in pass yards and 9th in rush yards. With that type of defense, the Bucs will continue to be a team on the rise. 5) Oakland Raiders(Prev: UR) – Well well well, here we have “Mr. Super Bowl” in at #5. Gotta give it to Pope, he talked a big game during the offseason and is sure backing it up so far in the season. With impressive wins over the Bengals and Chargers(and Pats at time of this writing) the Raiders are more than backing up all the talk. Surprisingly Jason Campbell is having a stellar season so far backed by the 2 headed monster of James Davis and DMC in the backfield. Pope has definitely put a target on his back so we’ll see if he can keep it up with so many teams gunning for him. 6) Carolina Panthers(Prev: UR) – After feeling disrespected for not making the initial Power Rankings in the preseason the Panthers have gone out and shown why they belong in the top 10. With wins over the Saints, Giants(and Bears in week 3) the Panthers are rolling. With the league’s 3rd ranked offense, 2nd in yard and 1st in rushing yards the Panthers are clicking on all cylinders. Jimmy Clausen finally appears to be ready to lead this team and DeAngelo Williams is looking like an early season MVP candidate. If the defense can continue to contain teams, the Panthers can go a long way. 7) Detroit Lions(Prev: UR) – In at #7 we have the Detroit Lions. After impressive divisional wins against the Bears and Vikes in the first 2 weeks the Lions have made a statement that they are no longer in the NFC North basement. Matthew Stafford is again having a great year as is Megatron but losing Nate Burleson and Steve Breaston for 6 and 8 weeks respectively will be a major loss for this team as they look to improve from last season. Will the offense be able to overcome the losses or will the defense step up in the absence of two thirds of their wr core? 8) New York Jets(Prev: 1) – Taking the biggest tumble of the week, the defending champs fall all the way to #8 after getting whooped by the Colts. Surprisingly enough, the defense which has been the calling card of this team for 2 seasons is certainly the weak spot and the team is sputtering as a result. The defense will have to step up if this team wants to even get close to repeating but with every team wanting to take out the defending champs, are they ready? 9) Houston Texans(Prev: UR) – The Texans land at #9 after going 1-1 in the week with a loss against the Colts and a win against the Titans to avoid going 0-2 in the division. This team continues to be lead by freak RB Brandon Boutte who already has 250 plus yards rushing and another 129 receiving and appears ready to lead this team to the promise land. The defense, which currently ranks 5th in points, 3rd in yards and 2nd in rushing yards allowed are playing with passion and it’s showing on the field. If they can keep it up, the Texans can challenge the Colts for the AFC division crown. 10) Tennessee Titans(Prev: UR) – Rounding out our top 10 are the Titans after a 1-1 week including a win over the Jags and loss to the aforementioned Texans. The jury is still out on #1 pick Tyler Dougherty as to whether he is ready to lead a team that figures to be in the playoff race all season long but with a 2 headed running attack of Ronnie Brown and Earl Bowman taking the load off of him, he should be eased into the season. The defense sure is doing its part ranking 2nd in points scored, keeping the team in games and less on the arm of the rookie.
