In what turned out to be a competive game the Cougars held on to beat the Bobcats 35-28. The stars of the game for the Cougars' wideouts, preseason All American Candidate WR Robert Jiles who caught 5 balls for 126 yards and 2 TDs, and WR Bobby Ratliff who caught 5 balls for 131 yards. On the defensive side of the ball SS Deone Buccannon made 7 tackles and 1 very huge interception. With the score 28-21 and the Bobcats driving Bobcats QB William Walker threw a pass towards the endzone, but Buccannon was their for the interception. The Cougs would get the ball and start chewing the clock, and with a little over two minutes to go and facing a second and 2 yards, Cougar QB Connor Halliday threw a 60 yard play action pass to Bobby Ratliff that set up the game clinching touchdown. Next up Nebraska.

The game was billed as a battle between Heisman candidate quarterbacks as David Williams (SO) and Larry Walters (RS-SO) faced off. Williams would mount some charges against the OSU defense but he never got Miami in the endzone. His only TD pass was an interception to Jamie Wood late in the second quarter. On the other side Larry Walters threw 2 incomplete passes to open the game but he completed every other pass the remainder of the game. For his final 5 passes he threw 3 touchdowns. WR3 Gerald Harris caught the first TD pass and HB2 Michael Vickers caught the 2 touchdowns. Vickers first career TD came on a screen that he took 57 yards for a TD. The run game got off to a good start with HB1 Roderick Smith pounding the rock. Smith scored on a 69 yard TD and finished with 148 yards on 12 carries. Freshman Vickers and HB3 Gary Nealy combined for 101 yards and Nealy punched in 2 touchdowns. WR1 James Louis also scored a rushing TD on a 27 yard reverse.

Offensive Player of the Game: Michael Vickers 12 carries 47 yards; 4 receptions 123 yards 2 TD (57, 23)

--The home crowd and an opportunistic defense helped the Trojans overcome a slow startand beat the Bulldawgs 38-7. The defense forced 3 turnovers and held Aaron Murray to 8-17 passing, while USC halfback Steve Salas ran for 89 yards and a touchdown. The Trojans will have a hard time choosing a quarterback though as both Mitchell and Scroggins struggled to get anything going.

Well I got disconnected afterward so unable to upload pics/vids, so maybe gowazzu can upload his RBs beastly run in the 1st quarter where he broke 6 tackles, but that was really the only highlight for the Cougars, who jumped out to an early 7-0 lead but would surrender the next 35 points of the game. Washington State had 3 turnovers to Nebraska's none, and after the Huskers first score Cougar QB Connor Halliday would fumble it inside his own 5 yard line, and within 1 minute Wazzu went from being ahead 7 to down 7, and it only got worse from there. Taylor Martinez had a great game for the Huskers, going 10/15 for 154 yards and 2TDs with 13 carries for 72 yards and 2 rushing TDs. Braylon Heard had a big game as well for Nebraska, with 139 yards and 2TDs on 13 carries. Washington State RB Rickey Galvin had 175 yards rushing and 2TDs on only 8 carries, with touchdowns of 87 and 69 yards.

The Nittany Lions run through another opponent with another impressive game on the ground. Most of the damage was done by RB Redd with 156yds 2 TD and FB/RB Zwinack 137yds 1 TD. QB Jones threw for 221yds 3 TD, but looked shaky at times with 4 INT's. The defense pitched its second straight shutout. The defense forced 3 to's and 6 sacks while holding the Panters to 221yds total offense.

    Week 1: Bye

    Week 2: North Carolina 35, #23 Georgia Tech 21

The Tar Heels made a bid to get into the top 25 a little earlier this year, grinding out a victory over Georgia Tech in Atlanta to open the season.

There's a lot of new for the Heels this season. Last season's top three WRs all graduated, so it's a new bunch of wideouts for senior Bryn Renner and it took a while for him to get connected with his new targets. Renner struggled mightily in the first half, getting sacked a fair bit, throwing interceptions, and fumbling a ball inside the 5 that was returned 89 yards for GT's first touchdown. But in the second half the QB settled down and had some success, ending things 10-18 for 230 yards and a pair of TDs to go with 2 INTs.

The Tar Heel defense is new-look as well. The starting secondary includes 3 true freshmen, including both safety positions. The good news is that represents a massive upgrade--last year's starters on still on the team but the new blood is far more talented, but the bad news is the Heels still gave up some worryingly open long passes where players were woefully out of position. The starting lineup also includes all sophomores in the linebacking crew and another true freshman on the defensive line, so there's plenty of youth. All in all though the D played well--they gave up a few home runs but actually were a better tackling group than last year's squad. We'll see if that holds up.

The one constant for Carolina is Giovanni Bernard. The fringe Heisman candidate got off to a great start, carrying the ball 15 times for 199 yards and 2 TDs. I don't know how to post videos in these posts, but here's a link to his 1st quarter TD run where the offensive line blew open a massive hole and provided a convoy:

The Heels have their home opener next week, hosting Minnesota.

The blocking on that run was sweet Vandermint. Huge hole for your boy Giovanni to run through.

FSU and UNC have to be in the running for the youngest teams this season, I think we are both probably starting more 1st and 2nd year guys than anyone else in T3.

Yeah--it was funny because I could barely see the field there were so many blue shirts in front of me. That doesn't happen very often. Hope to see you again in the ACCCG.

    USC - 15
    #2 Texas - 31

Texas defense has strong showing in opening game of the season against the USC Trojans. The Horns' defense held the Trojans scoreless through 3 qtrs of action to come away with the victory. Texas forced 3 USC turnovers and sacked the QB 3 times. The Texas offensed played solid but were not hitting on all cyclinders for their 1st game of the season. Under first year starter Connor Wood under center the Horns' struggled to find their identity. Wood had a decent day only throwing 6 incompletions, but also threw 2 ints. He finished the day 12 of 18 for 174 yrds with 2 tds and 2 ints. RS-FR J.R. Davis who beat out Traylon Shead for the start struggled against the trojan defense. Davis rushed 15 times for 104 yrds and 2 tds.
Texas scored 7 pts in each of the first 3 qtrs while holding USC scoreless. USC would put up 15 pts in the 4th but Texas would add another 10 of their own.
Texas now turns its attention to a rematch of the BCS National Championship game agaisnt Ohio State at the horseshoe.

    1 2 3 4 F
    USC 0 0 0 15 15

FSU beats UCLA 42-24 at Tallahassee.

The first half of this game looked like neither defense had ever heard of the word 'stop'. Both teams marched the ball up and down the field at will, to the point that Coach Dru handed the ball to his new QB Brenton Newby with the team down 21-14 with 40 seconds left in the half and UCLA poised to get the opening 2nd half kickoff, and told him to go out and carve his own legend. The kid delivered, as he led the team on a beautiful drive down the field, leading to a TD and tied halftime score.

The game turned on UCLA's opening possession of the 3rd quarter, when on 3rd down, the QB half rolled into an overload blitz and was crushed by DE Jeremy Miller, who forced a fumble that was returned for a TD. UCLA's next drive ended in a FG, and after FSU tacked on another TD to go up 35-24, you could sense desperation in the eyes of the Bruins. On the next drive, UCLA attempted a long corner route that was intercepted by the Seminoles FS to seal the win.

    Great game as usual Perry.

FSU wins at Boston College 31-7 in a game that was dominated by the Seminole defense, who knocked out the starting BC running back for 10 weeks in the 2nd quarter.

QB Brent Newby struggled a bit in this game, mainly due to a ferocious pass rush by BC, who sacked the young man 4 times. He was aided by freshman HB Andy Frank, who had 112 yards and 2 TD's on 10 carries and WR Greg Dent who hauled in 7 receptions for 101 yards and a score.

The defense was led by DE Jeremy Miller, who recorded 5 tackles, 2 sacks and another FF that led to a late half score.

Up next is a rivalry game vs Virginia Tech.

Ohio State traveled to Normanville to take on the Oklahoma Sooners, an early road test for second year starter Walters. Walters was impressive but he got a lot of help from his teammates. On the first offensive play Roderick Smith burst through a hole in the defense and went untouched for a 77-yard score. After forcing a punt Ohio State struck quick once again. Walters hooked up with speedster Michael Vickers on a screen pass and Vickers ran 62 yards for the score. CJ Barnett picked off Sooners' QB John Massey on the next drive and Smith would score again to make it 21-0 in the first quarter. Ohio State was quiet in the second quarter and Oklahoma managed to close the gap. Near the end of the half Massey got Oklahoma its first TD on a 6-yard pass to Kenny Stills. All together the Sooners were down 21-10 going into the half.

In the second half OSU would put the game away. The offense added a field goal and a touchdown in the third quarter. The TD came courtesy of a Walters pass to DeMario Breedlove. On defense Ohio State picked off Massey 3 more times. Dominic Clarke picked off 2 of the passes and Ross Hand grabbed the other interception. In total Ohio State gave up less than 200 yards offense to Oklahoma. The run defense was especially stingy, Martin Jones rushed for 25 yards on 9 carries. The early deficit forced Oklahoma to pass more and the secondary proved it was ready for this challenge. Walters had another very efficient game for OSU. He finished 10-11 for 191 with 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. He has just 3 incomplete passes in his first 2 games.

This is not the last Big 10 foe for Ohio State as Texas comes to town. This will be the third time the schools have faced off in the past 2 seasons, including the epic National Championship from last season. Both schools are 2-0 entering the showdown.

I looked forward to playing Vandermint but we couldn't connect so he went on auto. UNC played the Gophers very tough through 3 quarters and always seemed to make a clutch play to stay in the game. This changed in the final quarter as Minnesota was finally able to get to the QB and make him throw before a receiver could get open. Maybe next time Vandermint...

Minnesota built a 42-0 lead to cruise past the BYU Cougars in the Gophers home opener. BYU had no answer for the Minnesota offense as QB MarQueis Gray threw for over 400 yards and Bryant Allen had a career day. Next up, the Gophers host Purdue to kick off conference play in the Big 10.

This game was over as soon as the ball was kicked off. On the opening kickoff the Cougar return man fumbled the ball, and the Bruins' linebacker Jordan Zumwalt picked it up and scored a fucking touchdown. The Cougars tried to respond, but QB Connor Halliday was picked off near the Bruins' 30 yardline on the next possession. The Bruins scored on the next play making it 14-0. The Cougars would respond with Connor Halliday running the ball 32 yards for a touchdown. However, it only took the Bruins like four plays to respond with QB Ted Landers 57 yard TD run. The Cougars tried to respond, and then fucking disaster struck again QB Connor Halliday fumbled the ball inside the 10 yardline of the Bruins. At that moment the game was over. The Bruins went on to score on that possession. The Cougars would score a touchdown with a little over a minute to go in the half, but the porous Cougar defense allowed the Bruins to score again before the half making the score 35-14. The Bruins would add two more scores in the second half, and the Cougs would score one more showing no signs of quitting.

For any one that is counting, last year on the first play from scrimmage the Cougar QB Jeff Tuel threw an interception, and this year the Cougars fumbled the ball on the opening kickoff. I think next year I plan on not turning the bal over immediately at the start of the game against the Bruins. If I do that, I may actually play Perry tough.
