SR RB Antoine Kirkland follows an NIU lineman in his last collegiate game as he suffered a season ending injury.NORTHERN ILLINOIS: 38ARMY: 7The Northern Illinois Huskies gained their first win of the season over Army. RSSR RB Antoine Kirkland played his final game of his collegiate career as he carried the ball 7 times for 94 yards with a TD, but suffered a fractured vertebrae which will sideline him for the rest of his career. His replcement, true sophomore Chris Harris, carried the ball 14 times for 65 yards with 3 TD's. SR QB Da Ron Brown, once converted from WR, played well completing 13 of 21 passes for 185 yards. SR wideout Anthony Johnson caught 6 passes for 104 yards. The Huskie defense was led by MLB Cameron Stingly who totaled 7 tackles on the day. CB's Matt James and Nick Poole each recorded their first interceptions of the year. Joe Windsor and Nabal Jefferson each added a sack. The Northern Illinois Huskies 1-0 (0-0) will meet up with UAB next week.
BOWLING GREEN AND RD MARK MAYS WIN OPENER 56 - 21 OVER NEW MEXICO STATEBOWLING GREEN, Oh -- In his first career start, RB Mark Mays played a fantastic game. The Senior rushed for 125 yards on 17 carries with 2 touchdowns and added a 97 yard kickoff return to start the second half. The game was a story of two halves. In the first half, New Mexico State was able to keep it close. The quarterback combination of Tanner Rust and Andrew Manley passed for 2 touchdowns and basically picked apart the Bowling Green defense. Fortunately for the Falcons, the offense was able to match the New Mexico offense score for score leading to 21-21 tie at the break. The second half would be all Bowling Green. Mays would start the half with a 97 kickoff return that would completely swing the momentum. After a New Mexico State drive stalled, Mays would take his next carry 71 yards for a score to give BG a 35 - 21 lead. The Falcons would never look back outscoring New Mexico State 35 - 0 in the second half.Up next for BG - on the road to face the Idaho Vandals.
AZTECS BEGIN SEASON ON THE RIGHT FOOT
SDSU - 35
Buffalo - 12
The big question being asked by the SDSU faithful is whether this win can propel the Aztecs to a successful season. Coach Bear was busy in the offseason trying to land the recruits he already had. With a limited amount of scholarships available, the Aztecs were done recruiting quickly, however, the big challenge was to retain the talent already on the roster.
Ultimately Ryn Clark stayed, however, star HB Isi Sofele bolted after only one year. Sofele had transfered from Cal to SDSU and didn't stay long.
Stepping into Sofele's shoes is Ronnie Hillman. In the season opener Hillman was solid. He started off very slow with a poor ypc average, however he actually busted off longer runs as SDSU was looking for a cushion and protecting the lead. Hillman racked up 78 yds on 14 attempts while his backup, Adam Muema, added 44 yds on six carries.
A suimilar swing occurred with Senior QB Ryn Clark, who started the game with many errant throws. He settled in and ended uyp throwing for almost 300 yds with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions.
"I could throw up right now. Any time you give up 19 points in the 4th quarter you deserve to lose." The Blazers start the season off on a bad note losing to a terrible Western Kentucky squad. After dominating the game for 3 quarters. The Blazers came into the the game in this season amid controversy after their prized star freshman QB decided to transfer. The Blazers went out in the offseason and had to grab a Freshman QB. Coach Odu has decided to go with the freshman. In this game Jake Carleson would go 12-19 but he couldnt strech the defense at all and didnt throw any tds.
"im very disappointed in this defense. We have loafty goals and if this is any indication of how things are going to go this could be a very long season."
Wyoming loses 35-0
San Jose Is Fired Up After New Hire, But Washington Pisses The Fire Out Quickly!
While SJSU was able to rack up some major yardage through the air and be successful when they needed to be on on the ground, it just wasn't enough to overcome a Washington Huskies team that bowled over them on the ground. "It was like a twilight zone in the 4th quarter," stated coach GURU, "we couldn't stop anything they did." The Huskies racked up a comfortable 21 points in the 4th quarter that ended all thoughts of the upset after 3 quarters of the Spartans hanging around with any hope. "We went with a 'gut feeling' and that was to start the returning QB Dasmen Stewart over the highly expected Aaron Potts, and well, he just couldn't get away from the blitz like we needed." observed Coach GURU. "So we have some thinking to do about the starting lineup for next week, we will need to hit the film room, and really re-evaluate our reps on practice. Aaron really showed up great in the game, and while he had 1 INT, it was a late INT when trying to rally us right before the Huskies just crapped out 21 points out of nowhere." joked Coach GURU.
The road is long, the road it GOING TO BE TOUGH, but it does appear that SJSU is startingthe journey on the right foot with an outing of 450+ in offense and a total of 500+ when you count the incredible return game from Forrest Hightower and Ben Thompson who combined had over 110 yards combined in return yards.
Time will tell with a pretty stout schedule for a San Jose State team.
Holy crap... Cooper is going for the Hesiman! 5 Td's with a 10 YPC Avg. Looks like SJSU and SDSU have the same type of linebacking corps... soft!
yeah... tackling was WEAK even in group tackles he just threw a bow and kept trucking...
Solid VictoryKansas pulls out the victory over Illinois, 38-20
Tray Robinson was beastly in the opening quarter of the game vs Illinois, gaining over 100 yards and scoring twice in the first quarter. A 51 yard burst up the gut would be the opening score for Kansas and before the dust would settle they'd be up 28-0 and in cruise control. Quarterback Ashton Glaser was efficient in today's game throwing for 226 yards and 3 TDs and 0 interceptions. Senior WR Eric McGriff caught 5 balls for 89 yards and a score. The Kansas defense would rack up three sacks on the afternoon, and knocked out the Illinois starting quarterback Whitmer. Next up for the Jayhawks is a big game vs Bowling Green.
Coach Bob had one thing to say after the game..."We dedicate this win to Coach ND"
First one a Good one
Idaho able overcome a 21 point 2nd quarter explosion by Air Force to get a win. Taylor Davis was able to spread the ball around for over 300 yards passing. Larry Dugan the huge Idaho DT was able to cause problems with the option attack. Idaho opened the game with a scoop and score as the MLB read the option got in between the Qb and Hb and knocked down the pitch and returned it for a score. Idaho prepares for Bowling Green and coach Ryty next.
A win is a winIdaho outlasts Utah State 34-33Idaho made the switch at Qb and it paid off. The Juco transfer Nick Morris was able to throw and execute in the run game to help Idaho win the WAC contest. This game would combine for 990 offensive yards and neither defense wanted to win. Big play after big play in the Kibbie Dome. However, coach sdid's team pulled it off late.Next up for the Vandals is Fresno St as the Vandals try to avenge a tough loss on the road from last year.
Battle RoyaleKansas is able to outlast Bowling Green in 3 OTs, 23-17
Not much offense in today's game until the overtime period. For three and a half quarters the game would be a back and forth battle, and would be tied at 3. Then Bowling Green pulled out the wildcat formation and HB Mark Mays threw a touchdown pass to put BG up 10-3 late in the fourth. Then Kansas would march down the field and score with :08 left to tie it up and force an overtime. Both teams would trade touchdowns in the first overtime, and then in the second overtime BG threw an interception and Kansas missed a FG. The third overtime saw Tray Robinson bust through the line for a 3 yard TD run. Then the craziest play I have ever seen happened. 4th and 15, and Bowling Green throws a pass that was deflected incomplete....wrong...the tip was caught by the WR, then he juked two guys, and it looked like he had the first....then...he fumbles, and Kansas recovers to seal the game.
Bad Start, Triple MeaningSan Jose State 24 Stanford 56Well, it was a tough start for Coach MG and his new team (to say the least). Driving early in the game was a nice surprise...until injuries and fumbles came out of the woodwork. Stanford had its way with the Spartan defense right from the opening whistle, especially on the ground. Stanford's Sophomore back Courtney Hughes ran for an astounding 239 yards and 4 touchdowns on only 18 carries. Hughes's backup Andrew Stutz got in on the gang bang as well, rushing for 33 yards and 2 touchdowns on 5 carries as well. Cardinal QB Josh Nunes had a very efficient showing, going 16 of 20 for 184 yards and a touchdown. The San Jose State defense is making a case for being labeled the worst defense in the nation right now, especially with how they have been tackling. New Coach MG had this to say about the porous defensive effort. "That was just embarrassing. We are going to have to go back, watch the tap once then throw it in the garbage and move on. This upcoming week is going to be all about fundamentals for our defensive guys. We need to tackle better, rush the passer better, stop the run better, play better in our secondary, everything. It will be a full-on defensive overhaul. I can promise our SJSU fans that something like this will not happen again this year." Offensively the Spartans were Jekyll and Hyde most of the game, either having big plays and scoring in the redzone or giving up costly turnovers. Trojan star QB and team captain Dasmen Stewart had a decent game under his new coach, going 16 for 30, 244 yards and 2 touchdowns as well as rushing for 74 yards and a score. However, the most important number on any QB's stat line is the turnovers, and Dasmen had 3 (2 interceptions, 1 fumble). Coach MG briefly commented on the offense after he was done berating the defense. "The offense played well, but we needed to stay more balanced and run the clock in this one. I felt at the beginning we had a good game plan but once DStew threw that pick 6 we panicked a little. That comes from the head coach on down, so I was responsible for the panic. I need to control the team better and keep our game plan going throughout games, and today I did not do that. Again, many things we can improve on but overall I was satisfied with the offense minus the couple first half turnovers."Look for the Spartans to try to bounce back next week versus the Nevada Wolfpack at home.
Idaho blows it again35-28WWell they didn't have the lead vs Fresno this year. But the Vandals had the ball down 3 and turned it over on a botched option pitch, but thats not it the LB would also take it in for score killing any hope for the fourth quarter comeback. Nick Morris the new QB in Moscow was off. He threw 3 Interceptions and did not execute the option which led to another turnover. He was counted on heavily as the Vandals were down 17-0 at one point. The Vandals are now 2-2 on the season.
Kansas Wins againJayhawks beat the Rice Owls in a tough game, 38-35.
The Jayhawks and Quarterback Ashton Glaser entered today's game clicking on all cylinders. Nothing could really stop the Jayhawk offense. The Rice Owls played great in a game that will go down as one of the classics. It was back and forth all game with neither team playing any defense on the afternoon. Glaser would throw three touchdowns and zero ints. Rice HB Rory Goddard had an outstanding day rushing for 167 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kansas WR also would come away with a great game catching 6 passes for 168 yards and 2 touchdowns. After this huge out of conference victory, the Jayhawks will enter Big 12 play next week.
Idaho holds on vs. San Jose State.
31-24The Idaho Vandals used a balanced efficeint attack to win a big conference matchup vs. SJSU. Nick Morris bounced back from a bad performance vs Fresno St. Morris connected for 3 td passes and executed the read option well throughout the game. Idaho's defense left much to be desired but did come up with a big interception off a zone blitz scheme where the Dline man broke on a ball like Asante Samuel for an interception. Coach Lovie or Ma Ga coached a good game and good luck to him the rest of the way.
Keep on Rockin'Rock Chalk Jayhawk add another winThe Lubbock fans came and saw the Jayhawks storm out to a 31-7 lead and hang onto a victory over Texas Tech 31-26. The Jayhawk defense kept Tech QB Scotty Young confused in the first half, and Kansas would force 3 turnovers. The offense would capitalize on the porous Tech pass defense, and QB Ashton Glaser would throw for over 300 yards. HB Tray Robinson scored 3 TDs on the afternoon, and he is definitely becoming the leader of the team. His passion for the game really showed vs Tech. That's 1-0 vs Big 12 so far...
Idaho wins 27-7Vandals handle the Aggies of New Mexico St.Idaho got 3 fumble recoveries from Shannon Charles. To win a contest that they were expected to win. Taylor Elmo caught a Nick Morris TD pass. Brandon Simmons punched in 2 TD's on the ground. Big Larry Dugan had 2 sacks on the day. The Vandals have a bye next week.Pics coming
AZTECS MAKE A STATEMENT WITH WIN OVER TCU 38-28
The Aztecs jumped out against TCU and managed to hold the lead throughout the game. Ryn Clark played very well hitting quickly timed routes against the TCU rush and taking advantage of the overly aggressive Horned Frog defense by throwing screens and then tossing the long ball with a max protection called.
The real story of the game was the ability of the Aztec defense to contain the Frogs' scoring. Two interceptions were key plays for SDSU, who still have toruble at times shutting down opponents on 3rd down.
With the victory, the Aztyecs move to 4-1, a strong start reminiscent of the year before last. If the Aztecs can get their running game rolling it would serve them well. Ronnie Hillman is talented enough to impact a game, however, he was frustrated against TCU, with most plays losing a couple of yards with one or two bursts that went for big runs of ten yards. But Hillman is a workhorse back and he will keep at it.
UAB WINS 1ST GAME OF THE YEAR AGAINST UNDEFEATED #12 MISSISSIPPI STATE!!!!!!....STORY SHORTLY
nice win man
Aztecs take down the Runnin' Rebels - 31-21
It looked as though it would be a rough game for SDSU. The Rebels broke several long runs. The Aztec defense continued to play well, keeping the score just low enough that Ryne Clark and Ronnie Hillman can put up a few more than the bad guys.
SDSU is having a strong season, rounding back to the form they had coach Big-Bear's first season, and purging the demons of their more recent challenges.
UAB pulls the huge upset to get their first win of the season.
Nobody gave the UAB Blazers a chance in this battle. The Blazers were up against stiff competition and one of the best teams in the country. The Blazers would march into Mississippi State's territory and come out with a win. Mississippi State was 5-0 and the #12 team in the country. Another factor that makes this win even better for UAB is that they were able to get the win with freshman QB Jake Carlson who would throw for over 300 yards and complete over 50% of his passes. Coach Odu "I really think we won this game because of our time of possession. I think we controlled this game from beginning to end, if you look at the stats we had the ball for 20 minutes compared to their 8. Sometimes your best defense is your offense. You might not put up spectacular numbers but a win is more important."
The Blazer would have a chance to go up by 2 scores in the 4th Quarter but would turn the ball over on their own 20 which would lead to a Mississippi St. touchdown with about a minute left in the game. That freshman QB Carlson came out like a Senior and led the team down the field to get a Touchdown with 22 seconds left.
It was a game to remember for the UAB Blazers and their fans and a signiture win for Coach Odu the teams first win over a Top 25 team under his tenure. Next week the Blazers are home to take on rivals Southern Miss.
Idaho gets smashed44-9The Vandals didn't show up for their home game vs La Tech. The QB's Taylor Davis and Nick Morris were horrible going 11-40 and throwing 6 interceptions. There passes sailed over open receivers heads the entire game. The defense wasn't much better giving up big play after big play. Coach Sdid is being questioned on his commitment to this team.Sdid: I'm 110% committed to the Vandals. It;s in my blood my dad gave his blood sweat and tears for this team. I'm not going anywhere we just got our *** kicked. I dont know I'm being questioned, about my commitment, it was just one of those games.
