    Cal Escapes With A Victory

Despite turning the ball over three times in the red zone, the Bears win thanks to a 70 yard TD reception by TE Kyle Parks with 37 seconds left to play.

"The play was called for a deep out to Hagan so he could run out of bounds to stop the clock," QB Allan Bridgeford said. "But the defense must have been expecting that because there was three guys on him. So I chucked it to Kyle and he knocked over a few guys and ran it in for the score."

Baylor had no answer for the athletic Parks (5 rec, 121 yrds, TD) and star WR Spencer Hagan (6 rec, 152 yds, TD). But QB Allan Brideford's mistakes kept them in the game.

"There's two kinds of problems a football team can face." Coach Jerry Bumpers said after his debut. "One is lack of talent. We don't have to worry about that. The second problem is flatulence of the medulla oblongata. And you saw a lot of that out there today. But luckily I got a cure for flatulence of the medulla oblongata, and that cure is kicking hind quarters. Those boys will be sore until they get their minds right. As the philosopher once said, 'Free your mind and your ass will follow.'"

The Bears host Northwestern next week.

    Florida 23 Miami 13

Coach Zikry's debut with the Florida Gators was not exactly as expected as the offense sputtered through this game but the defense came up big when they were needed. Hosting #11 Miami at home was never going to be an easy task for a home opener but the Gators did just enough to squeak out the victory. Florida would score the first 13 points in the game as QB Terrel Carr found Chris Dunkley for a 24 yard touchdown on 3rd down, followed by a 29 and 26 yard field goal by William Hugues. Miami would get on the board with 3:33 left in the half as Patrick Wynn found his tight end, Clive Walford, for a 34 yard score to cut the deficit to 6 as Florida took the 13-7 lead into half.
Florida would add to their lead as Carr threw his 2nd touchdown on the day, finding his fullback Cory Johnson for a 2 yard score before Hughes extended the lead in the 4th hitting a 28 yard field goal. Down 16, Miami would score with 44 seconds left on the clock as Wynn found Luke Thomas for a 8 yard score, but after they missed the 2 point conversion they were unable to get the onside kick and Florida would kneel it down to escape with the 23-13 win.
    Game Notes:
*The Florida defense showed up big time in their season opener, limiting the explosive Miami offense to 10% 3rd down conversion rate, while also limiting them to 4.68 yards per pass, and 1.74 yards per rush.
*HB Mack Brown of Florida was hurt on the last play of the 2nd quarter and would not return to the game. He finished up with 10 rush attempts for 83 yards. Marcus Martin would run the ball 21 times in the 2nd half and end with 88 yards himself.
*Terrel Carr struggled in his first game of the year going 13-24 for 192 yards, throwing 2 TDs and 2 interceptions.
The Florida Gators take on Texas Tech next week.

UCLA Opens Up with an Impressive Victory 42-7

On a bright sunny afternoon in California, the 24th Ranked, UCLA Bruins, opened their season in impressive fashion, beating Buffalo 42-7, in a game where UCLA's starters didn't even make it onto the field in the 2nd half.

The UCLA Bruins took a 21 nothing lead in the first quarter, without their offense even running a play. On Buffalo's first two offensive plays of the games, the Bruins D put pressure on the QB causing him to fumble on both plays, as a result a Bruins defender picked up the loose ball, and returned it for the score. After Buffalo finally settled down, and managed 3 plays, they decided to put the ball to the ever dangerous punt returner, Paul Richardson, who took the punt to the house, later in the game he would also return another punt for a touchdown, and that was all she wrote, folks.

    UCLA Passing
Richard Brehaut was 2 of 6 for 40 yards and a TD

    UCLA Rushing
Jordan James carried the ball 10 times for 82 yards and a TD
Malcom Jones carried the ball 9 times for 34 yards
Damien Thigpen carried the ball 11 times for 27 yards

    UCLA Receiving
Paul Richardson had 2 catches for 40 yards and a TD (along with his 2 Punt Returns for TDs)

Red Raiders outlast Miners in Season Opener
On Saturday the Texas Tech Red Raiders kicked off their 2013 season with a trip to take on UTEP.
The UTEP fans were wired up in anticipation for what was to be a chess match. The opening half of the
game saw both defenses displaying their power. Both offenses pulled off drives however the defenses stiffened
once the redzone was entered. The score at the half was 3-3.

The second half opened up much like the first with defensive stops and failed conversions. However the Red Raiders were
able to finally put together a scoring drive that was capped off by a 2 yard touchdown run by HB Delans Griffin. The third quarter
    closed with Tech leading 10-3.

The fourth quarter was unlike the rest of the game. With both teams in desparation mode the offenses finally started clicking.
It started by a 11 yard rush by QB Siegel of UTEP to tie the game at 10. The Red Raiders would answer with a 76 yard touchdown pass
from QB Young to WR Sanders. UTEP would put together a drive of their own capped off by a 49 yard pass from QB Siegel to
WR McGhee. Now with under 2 minutes in the game it was a gridlock at 17. Tech would get the ball back and after chewing much
of the clock off they would turn the ball over. UTEP took possession and began their drive. However this drive would come to an end
when an interception closed their drive. QB Young of Texas Tech would once again connect with WR Sanders for a big play. A 50 yard
touchdown pass with 44 seconds remaing to give the Red Raiders the lead and eventually the win 24-17.

Coach Sabo had this to say after the game
"Wow what a game. This game had it all from the defense to the offense. I have alot of respect for UTEP for coming out here and
making us earn every inch today. It was a great game and a tribute to the hard work both teams put into the offseason. "

The Red Raiders welcome the Gators of Florida in week 3.

Virginia Escapes #21 Iowa to Improve to 1-1

    #23 Virginia 35 vs. #21 Iowa 30

Cavaliers Defeat Coach E's Alma Matter in a Tight Game

It was a good rebound for the reigning BCS champs who improved to 1-1 with a win over the Iowa Hawkeyes. "I'm really proud of how we played today," said Coach E "This is a totally new look team from last year and I think it is just taking us a few games to mesh together."

Virginia scored 21 points in the 2nd quarter and was up 28-10 at halftime. The Hawkeyes rebounded and cut the lead to 5 with 1:30 to go in the game, but a failed onside kick sealed the game for the Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers will travel to Miami to take on the #11 Hurricanes. It is bound to be a great ACC matchup.

    Virginia Players of the Game:
    QB - Ross Metheny - 12 of 21 for 201 yards, 2 TD 2 INT
    HB - Dominique Wallace - 23 carries for 101 yards, 3 TD

Mississippi State Opens up the Season with a Bang, Mauls Troy 59-7

Mississippi State didn't overlook it and they definitely aren't ignoring it. "We're not even ranked this season, huh?" said a grinning Tyler Russell. "That'll change soon. Our guys are focused and ready to improve upon last season." If the QB is right, the SEC and the nation better watch out. MSU was a suprise last season, working their way to 9 wins and nearly winning the SEC under first-year head coach nrg_qbz. They opened up their second campaign with an exclamation mark. Returning starting QB Tyler Russell threw for 329 yards and 4 TDs while RB Casey McCall ran for 98 yards. The defense held Troy's starting QB to 8-26 passing and bottled up their running game. Troy ran the ball 18 times for a total of 2 yards before RB Greg Pratt rumbled for a 72 yard score against the second-stringers. "Overall it was a good start," said coach nrg_qbz. "We have a big game coming up against USF, so that's who we're looking forward to next."
