Sloppy Offense Leans on Defense For Win

    #6 Penn State 38
    Purdue 21

Purdue got a good look at Markell Cameron's world class speed, as he sped past them for an 88 yard kickoff return to open the game. On the next drive, on Purdue's second play, John Sullivan intercepted a Walker pass to set up a 5 yard TD by Johnson. The defense kept getting turnovers: a strip and 2 interceptions in the 1st quarter, but Penn State couldn't do anything with them, turning it over themselves or getting stopped on 3rd down. Up 14-7, following a Gentry TD run, the PSU special teams came up big again - Cameron took another kickoff back 91 yards for a TD. At the half, it was 28-14 PSU.

Penn State struggled in the 3rd quarter, mostly due to Johnson and McIntosh being knocked out of the game early. Backup QB Crawford and RB Moore, had trouble doing much of anything. Crawford did get the Nittany Lions into the red zone, but threw a pick at the 5. Moore was stopped on 3rd and goal at the 1 and PSU had to settle for a FG. Late in the game, Crawford was able to get on the board late, scoring from 10 yards out.

    Michigan 41
    Nebraska 24

Nebraska opened this game up looking to shock the Wolverines and give them their first loss. Forcing Michigan to punt, not once, but twice, and taking there first possession down and settling for a field goal. Then Nebraska broke a run, and took it down to the 4 yard line. Unfortunately, they were stopped and forced to kick a field goal. After the ensuing kickoff, David Harrison took his first rush of the game for a 79 yard touchdown run. Nebraska would break another run, but this time, would get chased down at the 2. Michigan's defense would prove to be too much again, stopping them at the 2 yard line. They would take another field goal and go up 9-7. Michigan would score the next 20 points of the game, and take a 27-9 lead going into the half with Nebraska getting the ball to start the 2nd half. Nebraska would take a long rush in for a touchdown to cut the lead to 27-14, but Michigan would answer with just over a minute left in the 3rd to go up 34-14. Nebraska would cut the lead to 34-21 with just over 2 minutes left, but couldn't get the onside kick. Michigan ran one play and was stopped, Nebraska called a timeout with 2 minutes left. The next play, David Harrison would take out of the backfield again and score his 4th touchdown of the game to put the game away. Blake Countess would get an interception and the game would end. Michigan solidified itself in the B1G Championship for the 5th straight season. David Harrison ended the game with 204 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns while Joe Larsen threw for 220 yards and a touchdown. The Wolverines had 4 sacks and 2 interceptions on the day. They will finish their season next week by playing Ohio St.

    Wake Forest 33
    vs
    Maryland 7

Wake Forest senior Kevin Sousa got the start today after Josh Grady led the Deacons to a 6-4 record so far in the season. Sousa did not disappoint as he went 14-19 for 194 yards and 2 TDs. Orville Reynolds turned in a good day on the ground with 92 yards on 17 attempts, and AJ Goodman did well in clean up time gaining 61 yards on 8 carries and also scoring a TD. Another spread out day for the receiving corps, as Terrance Campbell led with 30 yards on 4 catches and a TD. Larry Miller had 78 yards on 3 catches, and Mark Bradley caught 3 balls for 55 yards. Reynolds also tacked on a 17 yard TD reception. Maryland was held to 237 yards and 3 turnovers. I would say this was our best defensive performance of the season by far.

UNC Recovers From First Quarter Folly
    [IMG]
UNC got flat out embarrassed in the first quarter of this game, after a few ill advised passes and a fumble, they found themselves trailing 0-28 going into the second quarter. TJ Thorpe turned things around with a 4 yard TD reception. Patterson knocked on a FG, and Thorpe returned a punt for 70 yards for a TD. 28-18 GT going into the half. Thorpe made an explosion with the opening kick-off of the second half, returning the kick for an astounding 106 yard TD. Patterson notched another FG, and a fumble recovery for a TD and an Espinosa TD run helped seal the deal in this one. UNC wins despite a horrible early performance and lots of mistakes.

Rivalry game comes down to Wire

    #21 Michigan State - 36

    Indiana - 29

The Battle for the Old Brass Spittoon ended with Michigan State victorious. The game was back and forth all game long with both teams coming up with big plays on both sides of the ball. But the game came down to the final quarter. Indiana would have an 8 point lead to start but Cook would scramble in for the TD and find Cole in the endzone for the 2 point, tying the game. Michigan State would play some great defense and get Indiana off the field after only 30 seconds or so. The Spartans would then use nearly 4 minutes to drive 40 yards and score the game winner with 13 seconds on the clock. Indiana would throw a couple desperation passes but it got them nowhere.

Michigan State is now 7-4(4-3). We hope to win our final game in Evanston to consider this regular season a success.

    Stats

    C. Cook - 15/27, 258 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT, 11 Att, 16 yards, 1 Rushing TD
    C. Mitchell - 31 Att, 149 yards
    J. Cole - 5 Rec, 148 yards, TD
    A. Sims - 3 Rec, 22 yards, 2 TD

Clemson plays sloppy but gets victory:

This game was ugly with 6 total turnovers, 4 of which were fumbles, Clemson was happy to end this game on top. Unlike last years barn burner the Tiger's kept scoring in every quarter. With a total of a little over 400 yards RB Brian Anderson and QB Tony McNeal shined. These two combined for 286 yards and 4 TDs. Anderson averaged around 4 yards a carry and McNeal was able to spread the all around to 6 different players. The only blemishes were 2 turnovers, which one was run back for a TD.

The defense stepped it up this time around only allowing 247 yards offense, and they limited big time WR Will Andrews to only 1 reception and 4 yards. Last year he absolutely murdered the Clemson defense. DT Jonathan Miller set the tone for the defense at the start of the 3rd quarter by popping the QB and forcing fumble, which was recovered by his partner in crime DeShawn Williams for a 55 yard TD. Miller and DE Corey Crawford dominated Miami's OL and both sacked the QB 3 times a piece.

Next week they finish up the season against in state rival South Carolina.

    Final score: 45-17
