    Overview

The SEC is home to the last three BCS Championship trophies. LSU won the title last season and in the 2015-2016 season. The Georgia Bulldogs took home the hardware in the 2016-2017 season. This year the conference is looking to make it 4 straight championships. LSU and Georgia are both popular picks to win the championship this season. Tennessee and Alabama have some ground to make up but also could be title contenders with some key wins.

    Preseason Rank: 29
    Overall Rating: 91/B+
    Offense: 90/B+

The Crimson Tide struggled last season but have the talent to make a run. The Tide have struggled to beat LSU, and that could be a tough hurdle this season. The Tide also have games against #14 Cal, #4 Georgia and #18 Tennessee this season.

The Bulldogs are very talented this season and this might be the team's best offensive unit. The defense is also loaded, especially at linebacker. Early games against Pac 12 foes Arizona State and #12 Washington will test the Bulldogs. Georgia also plays Alabama and a road game against #18 Tennessee. If the Bulldogs win the SEC East, they will likely faces the winner of the Bama/LSU game in conference title game.

LSU has the best roster but they also have the toughest trip to the title game. They start the season with matches against #14 Cal, #12 Washington, #1 Oregon and #13 Ohio State. The game against Oregon could be the most difficult as the Ducks are nearly a match for LSU in terms of talent. LSU also has to play Alabama, and winning that game will bump the team into the conference title game. A date with Georgia or Tennessee would likely await LSU in the conference championship game.

Tennessee has the least roster talent of the 4 squads, but Coach Gwill has proven he can win big games with this squad. Games against Ohio State and Michigan will be tough matchups for the Volunteers. The Volunteers also draw conference foes Georgia and Alabama. The winner of the Georgia/Tennessee will likely represent the SEC East in conference title.

    Week 1

    Georgia 63
    Pittsburgh 17

The Bulldogs offense looked unstoppable in this game. QB Justin Jackson looked much more poised in his second season. He passed for 5 touchdowns and 458 yards in this game, all before halftime. He completed 16 of his 20 attempts and averaged 28 yards per completion. The Bulldogs' receiving core will be a key this season. Senior Paul Jones graduated but Mitchell and Schroeder returned. Both scored touchdowns in this game, and Mitchell had a huge day. He caught 4 passes for 170 yards, including a 79 yard TD. Sophomore Tolbert also eclipsed the 100-yard plateau. He caught 5 passes for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns. As a team Georgia gained 665, including 592 yards in the air. The defense made some stops but also struggled stopping the Panthers' passing attack. Pittsburgh was able to pass for 345 yards, including 2 TD passes by QB Hill. The one positive on defense was the pass rush. The Bulldogs sacked Hill 6 times in this game. Cornerback Williams also picked off a pass, but was beat several times in coverage.

    LSU - 51
    Cal - 21

The Tigers started off the season with a bang, defeating the 14th ranked Golden Bears by a big margin. Things were just clicking for the offense today. After getting off to a quick 14-0 lead, it looked like things would be getting out of hand until Cal return man Shannon Fox returned a kick off 106 yards for a TD. LSU responded with a field goal, and then got the ball back again shortly after. Then Cal stripped the ball on a pitch and took it back for a TD. It looked like it would be one of those games. After that fumble, however, the bad luck stopped for the Tigers as they would tally 31 unanswered points. At that point, the defense finally gave up a score.

QB Brian Hall looked impressive in his start, completing 10/14 passes for over 300 yards and 5 TDs. Hopefully he is able to keep up those crazy numbers in the passing game. He had a few good scrambles when Cal dropped 8+ into coverage as well, though his terrible job running the option kind of overshadowed that. He will really need to work on those plays if he wants his athleticism used to the fullest extent.

It looks as though it will be running back by committee this year, with a true freshman HB in Kenneth Ross and RS Sophomore Bryant Taylor. Both are former 5 star recruits. The pair combined for 144 yards on 31 carries against a fairly staunch defense. The production here is not as solid as it has been in the past few years, so these numbers will need to improve.

Chris Jones had a career caliber game with over 200 yards and 3 TDs. He used his great size and decent speed to make some great plays for the Tigers. A lot of people were doubting the decision to declare him the #2 receiver this year over Roger Lester, but this game shows just how good Jones can be.

The sophomore pair of former 5 star defensive linemen Derrick Banks and Dan Hand got their first starts today and did not disappoint, sacking the quarterback 5 times. Safety Courtney Moore showed his playmaking ability with an interception. Overall, the defense played very well, holding Cal to 6/18 passing for 101 yards and -6 yards of rushing.

It would appear that the promise of free corn dogs for the defense when they hold defenses to less than 100 yards of offense paid off.

    --

Next week, LSU will play the Washington Huskies.

    Week 2

Tempe, AZ - The Georgia Bulldogs were able to go on the road and grab a key win. Georgia boasts one of the best defensive units in the country and it showed in this game. Arizona State's QB Lane was sacked 4 times in this game. Defensive tackle Stegall accounted for 3 of the 4 sacks. The pass rush also forced Lane to make bad decisions. This led to 3 interceptions. Cornerbacks Williams, Holmes and Watkins each picked off a pass in this game. The fourth takeaway came via a fumble. Linebacker Ruffin scooped up the looose ball.

Like most games, the offense was led by QB Justin Jackson. The sophomore QB had another efficient game, completing 10 of his 16 attempts for 198 yards. This included 2 touchdown passes, 1 each to seniors Mitchell and Schroeder. Schroeder ended up leading the team in receptions (4) and yards (79). The run game also had a solid day, led by senior HB Herron. He carried it 19 times for 80 yards, including a short TD. HB #2 Lewis added 43 yards and scored 2 short touchdown runs. More importantly Jackson and the offense did not turn the ball over. The lone turnover was committed by the special teams unit. Punt returner Bush got leveled on a punt return and coughed up the pigskin. The fumble was scooped by ASU and returned for a score.

Georgia will face off with another PAC 12 foe in week 3. The Bulldogs will face off with the Washington Huskies in that match. Washington will be looking to get some revenge on the SEC. The Huskies were beaten by LSU in week 2.

    Georgia 43 - Arizona State 10

Offensive Player of the Game - Jackson 10-16 198 yards 2 TD/0 INT

Defensive Player of the Game - Stegall 5 tackles 3 sacks

    LSU - 28
    Washington - 14

The Tigers were just able to eek out a win against a tough Washington team. A pair of early picks on two terrible passes by Hall resulted in at least 10 lost points to hurt a good start. Until they switched to the read option, LSU struggled on the ground. The short passes were also pretty tough with so many Washington defenders clogging the middle of the field. LSU took advantage of the aggressive play by the lone safety by going over to the top repeatedly with good success.

Next week the Tigers host #1 Oregon in a rematch of last year's non conference game. Unfortunately, Ray Green is not here to break the single game LSU rushing record again.

    LSU - 20
    Oregon - 3

It wasn't quite as dominating as last year's game, but LSU won nonetheless. They were able to get off to a great start with two runs by Hall in the first quarter. One on a scramble where a lineman came through almost untouched and another on an option keeper. From there, the defenses set in. Neither team was able to do a whole lot. 3 field goals were scored in the last 3 quarters. LSU came the closest to the end zone, with Tigers WR Johnson fumbling into the end zone at the 1 yard line. CB Harvey came up huge for LSU, setting the single game interception record for LSU with 4.

This is the second game this season the Tigers have held their opponents to less than 100 yards of offense. Next week LSU finishes off the tough portion of their schedule with a game against Ohio State.

    Nice work brave..

Alabama slips to 1-1 after giving up a late game lead to Cal. Hopin to get a 'W' over LSU at some point, it would definately shake things up a bit.

    LSU - 31
    OSU - 10

Things looked like they would go well for the Buckeyes, as they completed a bomb on their first play of the game. However, they ended up having to settle for a field goal. For the rest of the first half, it was all LSU as they rallied to score 31 unanswered points and played some great D to head into half time with a 28 point lead. From then, both teams got a little bit conservative and neither team did much until Ohio State put together a TD scoring drive at the end of the game. Hall completed 5 of his 6 passes for 61 yards and added a TD and 28 yards on the ground despite being sacked. Taylor also ran the ball well, with 73 yards on 11 carries. Tolbert and Hand both had 2 sacks for the defense. Harvey continued his INT streak with one that he returned for a TD. Elton Taylor returned a punt for a TD.

This concludes a tough stretch of out of conference play for the Tigers. Now they start the SEC schedule which they should breeze through until they meet Alabama.

    Week 4

Athens, GA - Georgia had a bye following the week 2 win against Arizona State. This gave the Bulldogs time to prepare for the 21st ranked Huskies. This preparation time did not help Georgia on the opening drive. Washington caught Georgia's defense napping on a screen pass and Cody Fowler went for a 67 yard TD. Georgia's offense got the ball and needed to put points on the board. Failing to score could have taken out the Bulldogs' crowd. Georgia fans were not let down as Justin Jackson engineered a scoring drive. The eight play drive was capped off with a 10 yard TD pass by Jackson to Fred Schroeder. On the next drive for the Huskies, Georgia's defense made up for its blunder. OLB Trey Sims picked off a pass from Jason Huff, and Sims out ran the defense for a TD. This swung the momentum to Georgia and the Bulldogs never looked back. They added 3 scores in the second quarter, a field goal and 2 more passing touchdowns from Jackson. The Bulldogs entered halftime with a comfortable 31-7 lead.

The Bulldogs received the opening kick but Jackson made his only mistake of the game. He was picked by MLB A.J. Davis on a pass over the middle. Georgia's defense was left with a short field but managed to hold Washington to a field goal. On the next drive Derek Herron delivered the final dagger. He busted off a 48 yard run for a TD and Georgia held a 28 point lead. Aside from a late field goal by the Huskies, neither team scored any points in the final quarter.

The offensive player of the game award belongs to Herron. He finished with 114 yards rushing and 64 yards receiving, both team highs. Schroeder also deserves some props for his 2 scores, and Jackson was solid at QB. He has matured a lot in his second season at QB. On defense the key play was the pick six by Sims. Another player deserving recognition is Isaac Stegall. He sacked QB Huff twice in this game.

Next up for Georgia is the start of conference play. In week 5 Georgia will face off with the other Bulldogs, Mississippi State. After that game Georgia will battle conference foes Georgia and Tennessee. Those matches are the most difficult remaining games for UGA.

    Final Score
    Georgia Bulldogs 38
    Washington Huskies 13

The offense wasn't pretty for the Tigers, with Hall having a dreadful game, completing only 8 of his 20 passes. The ground game was alright, averaging about 5 yards a carry, but that is less than LSU would expect against a team like Vanderbilt. Elton Taylor helped out with a special teams TD on a punt return. Courtney Moore appears to be living up to his potential in his sophomore season, with 2 sacks and an INT from the safety position. Thomas also had 2 sacks. Davis, Tolbert, and Hand had 1 sack each. The defense was absolutely ferocious, allowing just 21 yards of total offense. So far, this unit has held 3 of their 5 opponents to under 100 yards of total offense.

Next week LSU has a bye before hosting Florida.

I had the opposite problem. My offense was on fire but my defense could not stop Mississippi State. I gave up a 98 yard rushing TD on like 3rd and 15 . I seem to have trouble stopping Mississippi State when they are playing a backup QB, it is the weirdest issue.

Anyways my team still won comfortably. I think final score was like 62-35. My WR returned an onside kick for a TD. My QB threw for like 450 yards and 5 TD, mostly in the first half but he played the whole game. My back rushed for over 100 yards and I think 3 receivers had 100 yards. Surprising my #1 WR Mitchell did not catch a pass in this game. #2 Schroeder, #3 Tolbert and I think #4 all had long TD receptions.

    Week 6

Athens, GA - The Bulldogs remained undefeated after a hard fought victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide. The offense struggled for most of this game but managed to put the game away with some big plays in the second half. The only first half score came on a fourth down run by HB Herron. It was fourth and goal at the 1, Georgia decided to go for the TD. In the second half Jackson finally made a couple big plays. He threw a pair of 47 yard TD passes in the third quarter. The recipient of the first TD was TE Dukes, while WR #3 Tolbert caught the other TD pass. The Georgia defense played an amazing game against Bama. The Tide gained just 101 yards and only 5 first downs. Alabama was held to 4-11 on third down attempts. B Weiss passed for just 60 yards and was picked off twice. He was also sacked thiree times in this game.

Georgia has another big game in week 7. The Bulldogs will make the trip north to Neyland Stadium to take on the #17 Tennessee Volunteers. That game will essentially determine the east representative in the SEC Championship game.

Off. Player of the Game - Jackson 10-18 220 yards 2 TD/1 INT

Def. Player of the Game - Sims 9 tackles (8 solo, 1 assist) 5 tackles for loss 1 sack 1 pass deflection

    Week 7

Knoxville, TN - Tennessee entered this game on a losing streak and needing a win to save the season. Unfortunately for fans of the Volunteers, the Georgia Bulldogs were the opponent. Tennessee started with the ball and the Volunteers were able to put points on the board. Tennessee used a fast paced offense with a lot of short passes, then beat Georgia over the top with a deep throw. Whitehead caught a 45-yard TD from QB Atkins. Georgia was able to answer back with a score on the ensuing drive. Justin Jackson led the drive and capped it off with a TD pass to WR #3 Antonio Tolbert. The Georgia defense stifled Tennessee's offense for the remainder of the game. Tennessee managed just 7 first downs the entire game, most of which came on the first drive. The running game for Tennessee was a non-factor as the backs received just 4 carries. On the other side of the ball, Georgia continued to put points on the board. Derek Herron punched in a short rushing TD in the second quarter. This TD and a field goal put Georgia up 17-7 at half.

Georgia started with the ball in the second half and added to the lead. Jackson tossed his second TD pass of the game and Tolbert was the recipient. TD pass #3 came on the next drive. Jackson completed a short screen pass to Schroeder for that score. Tennessee really struggled to hold the ball in the second half. Atkins was picked off twice and lost a fumble. These turnovers led to a couple more field goals.

With this victory, Georgia is unlikely to face a challenge till the conference championship game.

    Off. Player of the Game - Jackson 15-17 247 yards 3 TD/0 INT; 9 carries 43 yards

Def. Player of the Game - Phillips 3 tackles 2 sacks 1 fumble forced

Justin Jackson's passing stats in 4 user games this season

    Arizona State - 10-16 198 yards 2 TD/0 INT

    Washington - 13-19 202 yards 3 TD/1 INT

    Alabama - 10-18 220 yards 2 TD/1 INT

    Tennessee - 15-17 247 yards 3 TD/0 INT

    Total - 48-70 (69%) 867 yards (216.75 YPG) 10 TD/2 INT

It helps that my O-Line is out of control this season. I think Jackson has been sacked twice on 118 dropbacks.

This was one of those games where it just seems like the computer is out to get you. Lots of broken tackles, deep balls that shouldn't have been there, dropped passes, etc. Thankfully, the offense was able to rally on the back of Derek Johnson, who got open more than any receiver I have ever seen before, with 16 catches for 318 yards... which is rather surprising since he had not been playing fantastic this season. Harvey had another multiple interception day - if he keeps it up, he might end up breaking the INTs in a single season record.

Next week LSU hosts 14th ranked South Carolina.

South Carolina came into this game ranked 5th, but were not able to live up to expectations as they lost big to the Tigers. Hall completed less than 50% of his passes, but had over 200 yards and 3 TDs. RBs Taylor and Ross combined for more than 100 yards on the ground. The defense was tenacious, though nobody really stood out from the pack. All in all, the Gamecocks had just 149 yards of total offense, most of which came on 2 deep bombs that ended up in jump balls that were caught, unfortunately. Mississippi State is next for LSU.

The Bulldogs hit the scoring cap before halftime and had to miss an extra point to avoid going over the cap. Vanderbilt had no answers for Georgia in any phase of this game. Georgia had a pick six and fumble recovery inside the 5 yard line on defense. On special teams UGA returner Bush scored on a punt return and a kick return. Then on offense the Commodores got to witness the Justin Jackson show. Jackson's final numbers for the first half were ludicrous. He completed 8 of 10 passes for over 300 yards and 5 touchdowns. He averaged something like 39 yards per completion and 34 yards per attempt. Jackson also rushed for a short score. The backups played the entire second half and the offense focused on chewing clock.

Ole Miss took a 10-nothing lead after a FG late in the first half, but Alabama was able to take the lead scoring on a 2 yard run by Powers and a 22 yard pass from Weiss to Little. The Tide held the all the way into the fourth quarter until it was take back by the rebels on a 5 yard TD pass.

Trailing, Alabama forced Ole Miss into a third down situation and came up with a big play to take the lead on a 48 yard interception return by CB Jackson. Alabama quickly got the ball back after Ole Miss went 4-and-out, and Stevenson ran for a 52 yard TD on the very next play to seal the win.

Ole Miss would score on a 61 yard TD run with 4 seconds, but the 2 point conversion was stoppe. The onside kick was recovered by the Crimson Tide.

Alabama comes away with a victory over the previously 6-1 Arkansas team. The Crimson Tide were able to start out up 10-0 after Jackson second INT-TD in the last two games.

Arkansas was able to tie it up in third quarter with a field goal, but Alabama took the lead back with a FG of their own. A 61 yard interception return for a TD by Alabama's Harmon capped off a 21-0 fourth quarter, and this one was all but over.

    Georgia Bulldogs Summaries

    Week 9 - Win over Texas 56-17

Justin Jackson had a solid game completing 12-21 passes for 242 yards and 3 TD. He did not throw an interception. HB Herron also had a solid game with 2 TD and 76 yards rushing. The defense sacked the Texas QB 8 times in this game and forced 3 turnovers. This includes a pick six by CB Joe Williams.

    Week 10 - Win over Florida 61-10

More of the same from Justin Jackson, 291 yards passing a 2 TD/0 INT. WR #1 Mitchell had a huge game with 6 receptions 188 yards and 2 TD. Herron added 75 yards and 2 touchdowns. On defense Georgia forced Florida to make a lot of mistakes. The Gators turned it over 5 times, 3 fumbles and 2 interceptions. CB Williams, DE Phillips and OLB Sims all scored defensive touchdowns in this game.

    Week 11 - Win over Kentucky 63-13

Jackson wasn't as efficient this game, completing only 13 of 26 passes, but he did end up with solid numbers. He tossed 4 touchdowns and passed for 231 yards. Jackson was picked off once in this game, his third pick of the year. Backup Powell actually outplayed Jackson, completing all 10 pass attempts and tossing 2 touchdowns. Six different receivers caught touchdowns in this game. The defense forced five more turnovers in this game, 2 fumbles and 3 interceptions. CB Holmes picked off all 3 passes in this game

    Week 12 - Win over Auburn 65-3

This was probably Jackson's worst game of the season. He threw just 1 TD and was picked off twice. The surprise of the game was the performance of HB #2 Lewis. Lewis led the team with 148 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns. HB #1 Herron and HB #3 Gray also scored touchdowns on the ground. The defense forced 6 more turnovers, including a pick six by freshman CB Watkins. Watkins led the team with 2 picks.

In total Georgia scored 245 points and their opponents managed just 43 points. The big difference is turnovers, Georgia averages less than 2 turnovers per game while their opponents average 4.75 turnovers per game.
