    Sevilla FC News :: October 1, 2013 (S11)

    -Finding an Identity-
    :: Sevilla Manager Cimmy set to try different formations. It is rumored that the young manager was not impressed with the teams balance between attacking and defending in the 3-4-3 "Diamond" formation with Serie C foe Atl. Minero.

    "The team made chances with the Diamond formation, but there was a lack of enthusiasm to get back and defend, which ultimately led to the loss. Atl. Minero is a very skilled team and defense needs to be mistake free against a team like that. We will look into some other options, including the 5-2-1-2 and 4-3-1-2 to see what we can get from this club."

    Sevilla's roster is full of different talent, so there are multiple options for the club to lineup on any given match day. Look for consistency in the beginning of the season, but as teams begin to develop an identity, it could be more rotational.

    -Captain of the Ship-

    :: Croatian international CM Ivan Rakitić will be the captain of Sevilla for the 11th season in the TFS and the clubs first excursion in Serie C under new manager Cimmy24. Rakitić is one of the clubs biggest talents and will also be taking the majority of the free kicks.

    Sevilla FC kicked off their Serie C campaign in fabulous fashion with a 3-1 win over promotion rival Atletico Mineiro in their own stadium. Newcomer Kevin Gameiro knocked in 2 goals for Sevilla to give them a 2-0 lead early on. After a defensive battle, Mineiro tallied one on the score sheet coming off a diving header by stand out striker Jo just before the half time whistle blew.

    Sevilla did not back down and looked for 3 points in Brazil as opposed to settling for a possible draw against the stingy Mineiro attack. Captain Rakitic found ST Bacca just under 15 minutes into the second half to give Sevilla a 3-1 lead. Despite multiple threats from Jo, Ronaldinho, and Fernandinho in the later stages of the game, Sevilla hung on to open up Serie C play with a very important 3 points.

    The futbol Gods were not with Marseille in the opening of Group G play. It all started with an own goal from Fanni in the 19th, giving Sevilla a 1-0 lead and putting a huge dagger into the hearts of the Marseille faithful. Shortly after that, Sevilla striker Gameiro had a breakaway, but was caught by Nkoulou who fought him hard to get the ball. A whistle stopped the play dead, giving Sevilla a free kick just outside the 18. However, to everyone's surprise, even the Sevilla staff, the referee showed Nkoulou a straight red card and sent him to the locker room and dashed what little hop Marseille had left.

    To their credit, the French side kept Sevilla at bay and held on to a 1-0 deficit to the half. However, shortly in the 2nd, Sevilla struck twice. In the 55th, CDM MBia headed in a corner from Captain Rakitic. In the 57th, ST Carlos Bacca showed his pace and out raced the Marseille defense for a one on one with GK Mandanda, leaving him with no chance to save the would be goal. From there on out, Sevilla tried to possess the ball and burn out the clock, which they did. Securing a big 3 points in group play in the TFS Coppa with Aston Villa and West Ham yet to play.

    It is very early in the Serie C and Coppa seasons, but the Sevilla faithful are optimistic on the direction of this team under Coach Cimmy24. A debate began before the season did and the locals were nervous in the direction of their beloved futbol club.

    "Estábamos nerviosos. Quería que sea una formación defensiva real o una formación ofensiva real. Cada uno tenía sus defectos," Pepe Caicedo, a Sevilla supporter expressed after the Coppa victory over Marseille, which translates "We were nervous. He wanted either a real defensive formation or a real offensive formation. Each had its flaws."

    Before the season began, friendlies dictated that Cimmy24 was choosing between a very defensive formation in a 5-2-1-2 and a very offensive formation in a 3-4-3. Each showed weaknesses. In a friendly against PSV, Sevilla played the 5 back formation and lost 1-0 on a give away goal with very little offensive opportunities. Against Serie C rival Atl. Mineiro (eventual victory in League play 3-1), Sevilla lost 2-0 in the more offensive formation as the talented offense of Mineiro had their way with the thin back line. The outcome?

    "I met on a happy medium. This roster is full of talent, and I decided to balance that talent out and let the team play to their potential, instead of worrying about whether to defend and hope for a sneaky goal, or score more than the others. Thus, the 4-3-1-2 seemed a good fit to start the season and so far, it has worked beautifully."

    The coach was spot on. With a combined goal differential of +5 (6 for, 1 against), this Sevilla team has accomplished both of the coaches goals. Not allowing any balls to meet their own net, and ensuring that a lot of their strikes do.

    ST Kevin Gameiro has been the hot boot after two games, but Carlos Bacca, Ivan Rakitic, and Marko Marin are a big part of the offensive success thus far. Even CM Stephane MBia got on the score sheet with a header on a corner kick against Marseille.

    "Stephane was put in the middle of the field because he is a defensive minded player. He could even play CB for us if we needed him. However, what some fail to remember is that he also is a threat on our corner kicks in the box. Marseille learned of that."

    Sevilla is riding high on cloud nine after their first two games and are awaiting scheduling against Parma to see really how good this team can be. For now, the city and the fan base will continue to rejoice in the success and direction of their beloved squad.
