    Saturday Heroes MidSeason Special

Welcome Saturday Heroes (and GUnit) to the Mid Season Special! This season has been wild already and we still have less then half a season to play. These teams have seen glory and pain on their way to this point in the 2011 season. Today we will be going through each teams season and looking at how well individuals have performed on the field. Let's not waste any time and get started!

Coach forever and the Crimson Tide are currently undefeated and #1 in the nation. Coming off a disappointing 2010 season, they are looking for vengeance. They were expected to make it back to the SEC Championship and NCG's last year, but fell short at the hands of the LSU Tigers. With the departure of Mark Ingram and McElroy, this team leaned on the shoulders of QB AJ McCarron and Trent Richardson. The two have put on an offensive explosion. Richardson is one of the premier backs in the country and has put up the numbers to show it. McCarron is holding his own under center and not allowing games to get out of control. Defensively, they haven't let a team score more than 14 points in any given game this season. This team has been playing lights out, and is on track to go undefeated and play for the SEC Championship and National Championship for the 2nd time in 3 years.

The Florida Gators haven't impressed most as they just don't have the glitz of the Gators of old. However, coach sdid is doing his job to keep Florida in contention. QB John Brantley returns from the Year-Without-Tebow, looking to solidify this team as his. Brantley and HB Jeffery Demps have been the key factors in this teams success in close games. They have won 4 games by 4 points or less, including an overtime thriller on the road against LSU. A couple of tough losses keep them outside the title of contender, but they are getting better. A key game this week with the Kentucky Wildcats could make their season a success. A key problem with Florida, turnovers. They are -4 on turnover differential. If the Gators can learn to hang onto the football and play better defense, this team could make NCAA fans question...Tebow who?

The Kentucky Wildcats are on pace for another SEC Championship Game appearance. Unfortunately for them, a little bad luck cost them their game last week against Mississippi State. They are looking to bounce back against the Gators this week. A heartbreaking loss midseason, only brings fire to the hearts of this young team. With Randall Cobb gone to work at the local Burger King, a new leader needed to step up. Offensively, that leader is HB Russell who has absolutely put on a show against the opposing defenses that they have faced. Defensively, well Danny Trevathan is back at it, leading the team in tackles (42) and sacks (3). He is one of the most feared defenders in the game and is looking for payback after the disappointing loss. With Florida and Stanford as the only two tough threats left on their schedule, Kentucky looks to make it to a BCS Bowl this postseason.

The Tigers certainly haven't had the year a defending SEC Champion usually has. It has been a tough road for the Tigers with 3 losses thus far in the season and still 3 road games in SEC play left, including Alabama. The key to salvage the season for LSU is beating Bama for the second straight year, but this year won't be the same. Playing in Bryant-Denny Stadium is no easy task. The defense has given up 28 points or more in 4 games this season, 3 of which resulted in losses. A heartbreaking loss to Florida in overtime looms over LSU, which they followed up by a loss to Kentucky, also in Death Valley. The Tiger faithful want to see the upset against Alabama, as much of the country does as well, but it won't be easy. QB Jordan Jefferson needs to hang on to the football and make better decisions or this Tiger team is toast.

The Hawkeyes have had a good year thus far. Currently ranked #7 in the country, Iowa has played very good football. With the departure of QB Ricky Stanzi, nobody really knew if this Hawkeye team could contend, they have proved everyone wrong. They still have the seasons biggest challenges yet to come, including this week against #2 Michigan in Kinnick, but they have taken down quality teams on the way. Their lone blemish came against Penn State in what became an instant classic. The Hawkeye defense played superb football, holding the Nittany Lions in the redzone multiple times, forcing them to settle for field goals. The turnover's dashed the chances Iowa had in that game, but the defensive play is definitely a positive for this program. With Michigan, Ohio State, and Baylor left on their schedule, this team could show up in a major postseason bowl.

The Wolverines are currently 2nd in the polls and are rolling again. They were able to go undefeated last year until...The Game. This year, they are looking to turn that around. Michigan has done work the past two season, after a few seasons of embarrassment for the UM program. Coach JCA has certainly turned things around and this year, it seems he is flying under the radar. Nobody has really mentioned Michigan much in talks on the national level, but it seems to be just how JCA wants it. With no Penn State on their schedule, the Big10 is much easier to obtain, as it is for the Nittany Lions. Unlike PSU however, the Wolverines still have to play Iowa and Ohio State. Michigan is undefeated, but their players don't have the stats to make them stand out individually, and that could hurt the Wolverines in the big games left in the Big10.

Ohio State is in search of defending their Big10 and National Championship's, but have 1 key loss to PSU, and two tough games with Iowa and Michigan left to be played. Terrelle Pryor entered the season as the favorite for the Heisman, but he has slowly lost his Heisman stock, mainly because of his 12 TDs/8 INT ratio. He is still this teams leader and is a playmaker all over the field. After avenging their loss to Miami last year with a 28-23 victory over the Canes in Miami, OSU played host to the Longhorns and notched another victory. Coming off a near mishap to Minnesota, Ohio State needs to focus on their games before Iowa and Michigan, and not look ahead.

Penn State has certainly done what they needed to do this year. After losing to Alabama, PSU turned their season around and focused on winning the Big10 title. With Michigan not on the schedule, PSU needed to come up with two big victories, and they did just that. They took down Ohio State and Iowa in Happy Valley and have one more tough Big10 opponent left in Wisconsin, who comes to Happy Valley. On the National level, Penn State is performing. They beat Boise St 34-0 along with the Iowa and OSU victories, and currently sit in 5th place in the rankings. Apart from Wisconsin, this team has to travel to unfamiliar territory to take on the Missouri Tigers in a inaugural meeting with coach Hack. Penn State needs to focus on their games with Minnesota and Michigan St, as well as Wisconsin and Mizzou, instead of focusing on whether or not Michigan will lose. They almost slipped up to Indiana, and pulled away from Purdue in the end. Time to tighten up the reigns.

Baylor has, let's face it, not been a threat in the big games. They started out the season perfectly, beating TCU. Kentucky was their first loss, and that was a close one, but since then...any other big games were no chance for the Bears. A 31-14 beating from Texas and a 28-14 loss at the hands of Michigan, stand as serious question marks for Baylor fans. This team is undoubtedly heading in the right direction, but how long will it take for them to get recognized as a force to be reckoned with? A massacre of a final 3 games stands in their way of righting the ship. Three straight road games at Oklahoma, TAMU, and Iowa could vault this team into the offseason, with confidence of whats to come. QB Robert Griffin's time is just about up, and this team needs others to step up to the plate.

The Tigers have impressed, and have started this season on a high note. After starting off slow last year, and turning it up in the second half this year, Missouri hopes to keep the flame going. They did start the season strong, with a big win over Florida, but since then, they have lost two. Michigan and Nebraska gave Missouri headaches and the Tigers are looking to finish the season in winning fashion. With the hardest tests being against TAMU and Penn State, both at home, Missouri is excited about their chances at making a high profile bowl. QB Blaine Gabbert has led this team all season and wouldn't be able to do so without his top target, WR Lawrence. The defense has struggled as of late, giving up 46 points to Texas Tech last week, as the offense struggled to manage 53 points to secure the record. No doubt, coach Hack has the defense running the gauntlet this week in preparation for Iowa St and the rest of their schedule.

Nebraska is another team that isn't getting the attention they deserve, maybe because of their dismal recruiting. However, this team is undefeated in BigXII play and has 1 loss on the season at the hands of the Kentucky Wildcats. Coach Tracy has this team defensively on top of their game, and the offense is rolling like a locomotive. However this week, they get Texas. The Longhorns host Nebraska in what is sure to be an epic game that could be part 1 of the two teams meeting this season. QB Martinez has grown into a sure fire leader of this program. Nebraska is on track to have a breakout year and is shaping up to play in the BigXII Championship.

The Longhorns are having a Texas sized year. They are also undefeated in BigXII play and are looking to get back to the BigXII Championship game. QB Garret Gilbert is having a stellar year under center and WR Williams is making plays happen. The offense has scored at least 27 points in every game thus far and are one of the fiercest offensive forces in the country. Texas has done wonders in recruiting as well, as kids want to play for this winning tradition. With Nebraska, Oklahoma St, TTU, TAMU, and UCLA left, the road to the BigXII Title is not easy, but for this team, it is obtainable. They have the weapons offensively to get it done, but need to lock down the defense. They haven't been contested for 4 quarters in every game, but they have given up points to teams that shouldn't score a single one on them. This team is capable of shutting down the big boys and possibly making a run to the National Championship.
