Southern Miss: Games and Recruits '10

    Season 2, Week 1: USM 29-MSU 27

    GOLDEN EAGLES SWOOP BY BULLDOGS
Southern Miss edges In-State Rival, Mississippi State by Two

Hattiesburg, MS--In 2009 the Southern Miss Golden Eagles expected to fly high on the wings of talented quarterback Austin Davis, stud running back Damion Fletcher and All-World wide receiver DeAndre Brown. Everything looked great in the preseason as the trio were clicking and working well together. Game one came along and Brown was lost for the season in the first half on a fluke play.

Now that 2010 is here, those high hopes from '09 have transcended into '10. This time there wouldn't be any disappointment in Game 1 as DeAndre Brown proved why he was rated so highly coming out of high school and why many feel he'll be a first round draft pick in the NFL Draft when he decides to go pro.

The Golden Eagles threw to Brown early and often. The 6'6", 216 pound wide out(see above, #5) hauled in 11 catches for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns as he led the team to a 2 point win over one of their in-state rivals.

The player of the game for USM was QB Austin Davis (above) who hit 24 of 39 passes for 301 yards with 2 TD's and no intercptions. Davis also ran the ball 17 times for 106 yards in the USM Spread Option offense.

    Scoring Summary:

    Q1
3:22 FG USM Estes 27 yards
2:21 TD MSU, Elliot 40yd Rush
1:29 TD MSU, Thompson 3yd Reception
0:09 TD USM, Brown 27yd Reception

    Q2
6:44 TD MSU, Henderson 4yd Reception
5:22 FG USM, Estes 48 yards
3:24 FG MSU, Brauchle 48 yards

    Q3
3:03 TD USM, Brown 3yd Reception

    Q4
6:17 FG USM, Estes 47 yards
3:12 FG USM, Estes 34 yards
1:06 FG MSU, Brauchle 34 yards
0:00 FG USM, Estes 29 yards

That's right, Estes hits the game winner as time expired to beat Mississippi State, 29-27.

USM travels to West Point to face Army next week.

    Game 2: Army 21-USM 41

    An Army of None
    Southern Miss Crushes Army

West Point--It was billed as a Battle of Wills but really, it came down to who "will" do what it takes to win and in this case, it was Southern Miss.

USM was once again paced by the outstanding play of Davis and Brown. Brown and Davis. Brown blew the Cadets coverage all to pieces on this day, hitting them for 247 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns. Meanwhile, Davis hit only 16-35 passes but racked up another 300 yard game (307) with 3 TD's and 1 INT. He also contributed on the ground as he always does, racking up 90 yards on 16 carries and 1 TD.

The Army fleXbox One really couldn't get much going once USM figured out a good attack on defense for it. Army ran 44 times for only 193 yards (4.38ypc) and when the run game is pretty much your only game, you need to do better than that. USM held them to 294 yards total on offense (101 passing) and killed them on third down. The Cadets managed a meager 26% success rate on third down conversions (4-15) and were 1-4 on 4th downs.

The win moves USM to 2-0. The travel to Wisconsin next week to face the undefeated Badgers.

#6 WISCONSIN BADGERS THE GOLDEN EAGLES
USM Mounts Dramatic Comeback But Falls Short

Austin Davis is picked off by a Wisconsin defender

When on the road facing a highly ranked opponent, it's usually not wise to find yourself trailing late in the 2nd quarter by 28. That's exactly what Southern Miss did on Saturday when they looked up to see they were behind 35-7 as they started what would be their last drive of the first half.

They managed to score on that last drive. Star USM receiver DeAndre Brown hauled in a 42 yard score from Austin Davis with no time remaining to go into the half down 35-14.

The second half saw USM's defense hold the Badgers to only 7 points while the USM offense punched in 20 to make the final score 42-37. USM dominated the game through the air while keeping up with the Badgers on the ground. Southern Miss thew for 429 yards on the day while rushing for another 135. Wisconsin managed 170 on the ground and 172 through the air. Four USM turnovers killed their chance to pull the upset. Wisconsin scored on a returned fumble in the first quarter (79 yards) and also had a kick return for a touchdown in that same quarter (95 yards).

USM goes away from the game knowing they should have won the game if not for the turnovers and special teams errors. The Players of the Game were: D. Gilreath for Wisconsin and Austin Davis for Southern Miss. Gilreath had 205 all-purpose yards (52 receiving, 153 on kick returns). Davis had 429 passing yards on 21-46 pass attempts and also rushed for 43 yards on 9 carries. Once again, DeAndre Brown was unstoppable. The junior caught 10 balls for 228 yards and 1 TD. Also chipping in for the Golden Eagles was WR Justin Jordan (3 for 86 yards and 2 TD's).

USM next travels to face Texas A&M in College Station while Wisconsin has an off week before traveling to Penn State in a Big 10 showdown at Happy Valley.

    Game 4: USM 46 @ #12 Texas A&M 40

    SOUTHERN MISS SPOILS AGGIE PARTY
USM upsets Aggies in OT Thriller

QB A. Davis scores on the Aggies

College Station, TX--Back-to-back road games against highly ranked opponents appeared to be a sure 0-2 for the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss. They lose last week to Wisconsin as the Badgers used a balanced attack and USM's turnovers and special teams lapses to win 42-37.

This week it was the Texas A&M Aggies who came in ranked #12 and feeling good about themselves. The first two quarters were a back and forth affair. Both teams traded off scores all the way until halftime. At the half, A&M had the upper hand 27-13. Yes, most of USM's scores were FG's while the Aggies pushed in TD's. Not a good way to trade scores with such a tough opponent.

The second half saw more touchdowns for the Golden Eagles but not before the Aggies started to dominate. A&M scored 3 out of the next 4 scores of the game while USM was only able to score on a Austin Davis run at the end of the 3rd quarter. The start of the 4th saw Texas A&M knock in a 40 yard field goal to make the score 40-19. No way could the fans imagine USM suddenly mounting a comeback that could see them score 21 unanswered points. No way.

RB K. Hardy scores early in the game

Yes way. Southern Miss did just that. With scores of 7, 57 and 6, USM found themselves tied as time expired at the end of four quarters. WOW!!

In overtime, the Aggies chose to take the ball first and failed to score. They missed their FG attempt! All USM had to do was pound the ball up the middle and in doing so they scored on a Mark Harris (Frosh FB) touchdown dive. USM wins, 46-40!!

RB C. Michael crushes a USM defender on his way to a TD

The Players of the Game were QB Austin Davis for USM and RB Christine Michael (above, after crushing USM defender) for the Aggies. Davis was 24-44 passing for 356 yards and 2 TD's while also rushing for 66 yards on 12 carries. Michael ran for 147 yards on 19 carries for a 7.7 ypc average and scored 3 rushing TD's.

Also of note statistically was A&M's WR R. Swope who pulled in 8 catches for 162 yards. Not to be outdone, USM's DeAndre Brown pulled in 8 as well for 144 yards and 2 TD's. USM's Justin Jordan also had a nice game, hauling in 5 receptions for 103 yards.

USM next travels to open the Conference USA season at ECU while Texas A&M faces Texas Tech at College Station in their Big XII debut.

GOLDEN EAGLES GET REVENGE ON PIRATES

The Golden Eagles looked to get revenge from last season's narrow loss to eventual nation champions ECU today on the Pirates' home field. It was a rather balanced attack from USM as they weren't able to do much damage through the air nor the ground.
The 30-28 victory for USM came from a more "grind it out" kind of attack today rather than hitting DeAndre Brown for big plays and using the spread option attack for big ground gains. Running back Kendrick Hardy and kicker Jared Estes were the consistent players on the day as both put points on the board two times as they lead their team to the win.
A big 3rd quarter from ECU (14 points) brought them back into the game that was looking to be a blowout win for the visitors.

The Players of the Game were: X. Jefferson (ECU) who carried the rock 18 times for 84 yards and 2 TD's. For USM it was M. Robinson (6 tackles, 2 INT's).

    Game Notes:

USM quarterback Austin Davis (Jr.) was 17 of 29 for 298 yards (0 TD, 1 INT) with 39 yards rushing and 1 rushing TD. WR DeAndre Brown had 7 catches for 135 yards. ECU's 3 turnovers were the biggest factor in USM's 2 point victory.

USM next travels to Tulsa while ECU travels to Rice.

    GOLDEN EAGLES SURVIVE GOLDEN HURRICANES
It was the "DeAndre Brown" Show
    [IMG]
Tulsa, OK--In another revenge game, the USM Golden Eagles looked to get a win in 2010 over the Golden Hurricanes of Tulsa. USM lost to Tulsa last season on their home field, a loss that packed quite a sting.

This season USM has it's star, DeAndre Brown (above), back from his season long injury he suffered in Game 1 of the 2009 season against Georgia Tech. USM isn't shy about using him as was evidenced in this game. Brown, the junior from Hollanborough, MS put up the biggest game of his career and one of the biggest games of all-time. When it was all said and done, Brown pulled in 10 catches for an amazing 385 yards with 4 of those catches going for TD's. The Tulsa pass defense was horrible today and even took one play where they sent the CB assigned to Brown and sent him all the way back to the goal line which was about 85 yards away. Brown scored anyway.

The teams combined for 1259 total yards. Neither defense could stop the other offense. It was a back and forth game almost the whole game as the teams exchanged scores. The only time the teams didn't exchange scores was the first two scores of the game (Tulsa, 2 TD's) and the last two scores of the game (Southern Miss, 2 TD's). In the end it was the Golden Eagles, not Hurricanes that came out of this game victorious (52-48).

    The Players of the Game were: USM-DeAndre Brown (10 catches, 385 yards, 4 TD's). Tulsa-Charles Clay, FB (14 rushes, 219 yards, 2 TD's plus 5 receptions for 88 yards, 1 TD).

    LUCKY WIN
Knights Get Lucky Win As USM Misses Chip-Shot FG At Buzzer

Orlando, FL--For some reason, cameras were not allowed into the game today. Maybe that was a blessing for the USM Golden Eagles.

The game was a high scoring affair, as many of the USM games seem to be. The final score of 43-42 in favor of the Knights was indicative of how close the game really was.

USM was down 0-3 midway through the 1st when they started on a 28-0 run that would put them up 28-10 at the half. The USM coaches were quite miffed when UCF scored a TD with 3 seconds left in the 1st half.

The 2nd half, esp. the 4th quarter was UCF time. The 3rd quarter saw UCF put up 14 points to USM's 7 while the 4th quarter saw UCF put up 21 to USM's 7. The game came down to short FG attempt by USM's Jared Estes that was lined up right in the middle of the field.

    The snap was good.

    The hold was perfect.

    The kick....

    Well, the kick was...

    WIDE RIGHT!

    USM loses by 1.

    Players of the Game:
    USM-DeAndre Brown, WR: 9 catches, 288 yards, 4 TD
    UCF-B. Harvey, RB: 26 carries, 198 yards, 2 TD + 3 rec. for 94 yards

    BLAZERS GET BLAZED BY USM
    Southern Miss wins, 30-13

Hattiesburg, MS--In another tough Conference USA match-up, USM was able to put together a nice win even without the services of starting QB Austin Davis. Senior Martevious Young (below, #14) came in to the game and showed the coaches and the nation what he can do.

The 30-13 victory came mostly on the ground for Southern Miss. Young is known as much more of a pocket passer than starter Davis so one would figure USM would pass all day long but that was not the case. Most of the game saw UAB battle to try and stop USM sophomore running back, Kendrick Hardy (#27). Hardy (below) burned the UAB defense for 156 yards on 30 carries (2 TD's).

The first half ended with USM up 24-13. The second half saw a defensive battle as the teams only scored 6 points combined (2 USM FG's in the 4th).

    Players of the Game:

    USM: K. Hardy, RB: 30 carries, 156 yards, 2 TD's plus 1 reception for 14 yards
    UAB: J. Brooks, RB: 24 carries, 85 yards, 2 TD's plus 2 receptions for 31 yards

    KEENUM, COUGARS RIP GOLDEN EAGLES
    42-14 VICTORY EMBARRASSES USM PLAYERS

Hattiesburg, MS--The Houston Cougars came to The Rock hoping to keep their Conference USA, BCS bowl and National Championship hopes alive. The team entered the game 7-0 and leading the CUSA standings as well as being ranked #4 in the nation.

The tone of the game was set early as Houston dominated on the ground and through the air. Keenum was an efficient 15 of 20 passing for 289 yards and 4 TD's in the easy win. Houston's Beau Bell ran the ball 18 times for 122 yards and 2 TD's. The Cougar D may have been the most impressive unit overall as they completely shut down the USM attack, holding sure-fire first team All-America player DeAndre Brown to 4 catches for 52 yards and no TD's. USM could only muster 222 yards all day while Houston put up 431 and could have done more if they had kept the their feet on the accelorator. Lucky for USM, Houston had mercy and killed clock, ran the ball and stayed in bounds, getting the game over quicker.

    Players of the Game:

QB Case Keenum, HOU: 15-20 for 289 yards, 4 TD's
RB Kendrick Hardy, USM: 16 rushes for 80 yards, 2 TD's
