Spartans Refuse to Lose, and take back the Megaphone!
Notre Dame has a rivalry with Michigan State University that began in 1897. The 1966 Notre Dame vs. Michigan State football game is regarded as one of the Games of the Century and is still talked about to this day because of the way it ended - in a 10-10 tie. Since polls began in 1936, this game marked the 10th matchup that paired the #1 ranked team against the #2 team, with Notre Dame having been involved in five of these ten games. Currently the Fighting Irish are 46-32-1 vs. the Spartans. However, MSU has won 10 of the last 14 meetings, including a streak of six consecutive wins in South Bend from 1997–2007. The Spartans also beat Notre Dame eight straight times between 1955–63 (they did not meet in 1958) under coach Duffy Daugherty.
East Lansing, Michigan | CTfromDC | The game started with great defense being played by both squads. ND was able to squeak out a couple of field goals after the Spartan defense held on 3rd downs. Michigan States offense and special teams played sloppily, accounting for two turnovers. The second quarter, MSU would get back of track, running off 17 straight before ND would add another TD to close the quarter. 17 - 13 MSU at the Half
The second half would be all MSU as they outscorded their rivals 21 - 7, cruising to victory in front of the 75,000 capacity crowd. 38 - 21 MSU Final.
Andrew Maxwell played well, going 16/31, 293 yards, 4 TD, and only 1 INT. All American Halfback Le'Veon Bell left the game in the second quarter with back spasms and will miss one week. Senior Halfback Larry Caper came in and picked up where Bell left off. Keith Mumphrey had another solid performance, 5 receptions, 102 yards, 2 TDs. He has 4TDs in 3 games.
