Negotiations Breakdown Between The Cardinals And Berkman
St. Louis, MO - The argument can be made that Lance Berkman has been the Cardinals best hitter this season and, according to an anonymous Cardinals source, Berkman wants to be paid like it. After signing a 1 year deal with the Cards in the offseason for just $12 mil, extension talks began with Berkman requesting a 5 year $95 mil contract. The Cardinals management were reportedly shocked by this outrageous request as it would make Berkman their highest paid player. Expecting the 36 year old to regress, the Cardinals counter-offered with a 1 year contract for less money than Berkman is currently making. Insulted by this offer, Berkman demanded a 1 year contract for over $30 mil. Needless to say, the 2 sides are drifting further apart and it's looking next to impossible for an extension to get done.
We reached out to Cards GM HAL for comment and he said, "Lance is a great player, great person, and a great leader for this team. We would love to have back in St. Louis in 2013 but it needs to be with a contract that makes sense for both sides." Rumor has it that the Cards may be shopping Berkman with their season falling apart, but armed with a no-trade clause, it'll be up to Lance to determine if a move is possible or not.
In unrelated news, the same source provided information that the Cardinals have withdrawn an extension offer made to Kyle Lohse and will intend to let him enter free agency in the offseason.

Rainel Rosario Gets Called Up To AAA
23 year old center fielder Rainel Rosario for the Springfield Cardinals has been called up to the Memphis Redbirds after a great first 2 months to the 2012 season. Rosario is not considered a top prospect in the Cardinals organization but his stats in Springfield were too good to ignore. He's batting .376 with 14 home runs, 39 RBIs, and an OPS of 1.229. He was the Texas League Batter of the Month for both April and May. The Cardinals are excited and very interested to see how he performs in Memphis. To make room for Rosario, the Cardinals have opted to send down CF Thomas Pham to Springfield as he has been struggling at the plate thus far.

    Berkman On The Move
St. Louis And Oakland Come To An Agreement
It's official. The Cardinals are in a rebuilding mode after a disappointing 5-13 start to the season and a 2-11 run in their last 13 games. After unsuccessfully being able to come to an agreement on an extension, the Cardinals began shopping 36 year old 1B Lance Berkman for potential suitors. They found one in the Oakland Athletics and the two organizations were able to come to a quick agreement. The Cardinals will send Berkman to Oakland for 21 year old SS Yordy Cabrera and 25 year old RF Josh Reddick.
GM HAL commented on the move, "We're obviously disappointed that it came to this and we wish Lance luck in Oakland as they try to push for the playoffs. This is a move that is in the best interest of the Cardinals and Lance and, should the opportunity arise, we would not rule out trying to bring him back in the offseason. And we're really excited about the 2 young players we got in return. Reddick is a guy that has had his ups and downs but he's still young and has Major League talent. There's a good possibility that Reddick will replace Berkman on the active 25 man roster. With Cabrera, he's a guy who needs some work but the potential is there to someday be an everyday starter. And judging from our talent, he doesn't have much competition at SS. So as long as he puts in the work and continues to progress, he could play a significant role."
