The Super Bowl would pit the 2 time defending champion San Francisco 49ers versus the hungry Pittsburgh Steleers. The 49ers came into this game fresh off victories against the Bucs and the Vikings while the Steelers would beat the Chargers and Jets en route to their first Super Bowl birth this year. The game was expected to be a slugfest as both teams rank at or near the top in all major defensive categories and it did not disappoint.
As expected, offense was at a premium in this game as both defenses controlled the game from beginning to end. The Steelers would begin the game with the ball and would put together a pretty good drive to get into SF territory. Thinking they would catch the defense off guard, the Steelers opted to go play action and throw a deep pass but the 49ers defense played it perfectly and the pass would be picked off deep in 49ers territory. The 49ers would not be able to gain much yards on their possession and would be forced to punt. With great field position the Steelers would once again get the ball into 49ers territory only to throw another interception. Luckily, the Steelers defense would live up to their #1 ranking and once again would prevent the 49ers from putting together a good drive. Learning from their mistakes in the first 2 possessions the Steelers went conservative on their next drive, leaning on Pro Bowl RB Marcus Tillman and short passes. The move would pay off as the Steelers would finally get on the board with a 34 yard field goal with over 2 minutes left. On the ensuing drive, the 49ers would finally move the ball but the drive would stall at the 3 yard line and the 49ers would kick a field goal as time expired to go into the half tied at 3.
The 3rd quarter was once again all defense. The Steelers would get their first turnover of the game on a Shamarko Thomas interception but the 49ers defense held stout and a sack would force the Steelers out of field goal position forcing a punt. The only points in the quarter would come from a 41 yard field goal by the 49ers who would take a 6-3 lead heading into the 4th. On their next drive, the Steelers were finally able to make some plays and faced with a 3rd and 3 from the 49ers 5 yard line, QB Zane Gray would connect with WR Davonte Belton for the first touchdown of the game and a 10-6 lead with 6 minutes left. The 49ers would drive the field one last time but the Steelers defense once again stepped up to the calling as OLB Bernard Solomon would pick off Colin Kaepernick with just over a minute left. The Steelers would convert 1 first down and kneel the clock out for the 10-6 win.

Congrats to both of you on a great season! Great job Curt! The drought is over!

Well...if you are going that route, you weren't the "defending" champs anymore. ;)
