The Steelers would travel to Cincinatti for their first matchup of the season with the Bengals looking to improve to 5-0 on the division. The Steelers would come away with the 24-14 victory but would lose the leader of their defense in the 2nd quarter when SS Troy Polamalu would go down with a torn labrum essentially ending his season and most likely his career as a Steeler. It's a sad ending for the lifelong Steeler as the defense was finally returning to its form from years ago as a top defense and Troy was a major reason.
If the play the rest of the game from his backup Shamarko Thomas is any inidication, the defense will not suffer any dropoff. On the first play following Troy's injury, Thomas would flatten the RB forcing a fumble that was returned 29 yards for the score by Ryan Shazier to give the Steelers a lead they would not relent. The Steelers went on to outscore the Bengals 17-7 in the 2nd half en route to a 24-14 victory.
