    NEWS:

    PRE-SEASON

Sunderland has been busy building a Squad that can compete in Serie this Season. Friendlies against the Top of the Table Contenders has shown that at its Best Sunderland can be dangerous, and its defense has proven that it can buckle down when needed.

Two matches against Serie A favorites Flamengo showed that Offensively they are lacking and is susceptible to one on one defending but as a group this squad can find some success this Season. The surprise has come in the Offense where Sunderland has flourished in the Pre-Season, with a Deadly Target in the box in Bendtner, and a quick Sessengnon guiding the the build up- Sunderland has been able to score 30 goals in 14 matches. Larsson has added a third threat in set pieces as he has found the back of the net 5 times on free kicks- Teams will need to be wary of fouling near the box against the Deadly Swede for it may be giving up an easy shot on Goal.

The battle for Number 1 has also heated up as C. Gordon's stake to the starting role is in jeopardy as Mignolet has proven to be a quick study between the sticks. After a fast Start for Gordon, Mignolet has proven himself worthy of consideration.

Manager HokieNYC is a little concerned that Clean Sheets are far in between but with a balanced attack available for the Manager in Season 6- it may not be necessary to pitch shut outs, just more goals than the other Team.

    SEASON STARTS!

After a few more tune up matches, Sunderland is ready to face Serie A. While confident entering the Season, Manager HokieNYC is wary that Relegation is a very good possibility- the chances of competing for the Championship is slim to none- a Mid Table spot at the half way point of the Season would be the best situation and anything more would be a gift.

"... the first four matches are tough, Ill take 4 points out of a possible 12- we will do our best to copmete but the odds are not in our favor..."

    (A) Ajax 0-0 Sunderland

Sunderland shares the spoils in Holland as Ajax were unable to breakdown the Defense-unfortunately Ajax Defense proved worthy of the task as well as both play to a draw. Sunderland had a chance to steal the Match when Bendtner found himself free behind the Ajax Defense- a race towards goal and an on rushing Keeper, the sunderland forward attempted to chip for the win. The ball sails over Ajax number one and slowly dribbled towards goal, only a hustle play from the Defense clears the ball before it broke the Ajax faithful's hearts. Both Teams leave the pitch with a point.

"...more things change, them more they stay the same. Wing play for Ajax is key- they speed up the sides and look to low cross away to their strikers- these are their Strengths and we will do our best to protect the wings.."

    (H) Sunderland 0-2 Spartak Moscow

Sunderland drops three points at home as Spartak Moscow continues their success against Manager HokieNYC run teams. The match was even keeled with Sunderland maintaing most of the possession. Spartak Moscow looked to be the more dangerous side as they forced Gordon into some key saves and the defense into some spectacular blocked shots.

The first goal was a controversial one as the Referee calls a foul in the box for one some pundits would deem a tic tac foul as Cattermole tried to jockey the ball away from Spartak. With the first goal in hand, Spartak took control of the match forcing Sunderland to push up- a mistimed Offside trap springs Ari loose in the backfield and he cooly puts the match away. Sunderland were unable to find the accuracy needed to beat such a superb squad as few of their shots went wanting.

" ... this Season boasts a star studded cast of Managers, Easy points are the thing of the past and I have learned from my brief stint at Stades, sometimes a Point is just as valuable, especially in the End of the Season when we start counting the pennies we could have/should have gotten as we look to make the cut away from Relegation...."

    After Match Comments:

".. not to take away from the superb game play of Manager Friz, but that was the most as backwards penalty call I have seen, if you are going to call the foul, call it when the player is outside the box tugging- don't wait till its in the area- that influenced the match and Refs do not need to be involved in results- they're suppose to be invisible...that being said- we missed our shots, the game was still well in hand and we could have turned it around, but we didn't. " Good Game Friz, Have in Jolly ole England.

    (H) Sunderland 3-1 Montpellier

First blood goes to the English side as Montpellier daunted Offense could not find the scorers touch early in the match. Several open shots at goal went wanting as Sunderland Defenders were able to absorb the initial attack from Montpellier. Key Blocks from Wes Brown and J. O'Shea kept the powerful offense flustered and Sessgnon makes the visitor pay by finding Bendtner unmarked for a header. Sunderland doubles the lead, when Titus Bramble finds a streaking Larsson on a set piece from midfield and the hapless goal keeper mistimed his parry on the slow bounce of the ball.

Montpellier ups the pressure to find a goal, and it was answered when Utak strips the ball from J. Oshea and finds unmarked forward to bring them close. As Montpellier pushed forward, Bendtner finds a streaking (offsides maybe?) Sessgnon who once again makes the hapless keeper look foolish as he is chipped from outside the box as he rushed to put pressure on the one v one.

These Goal of the Week contenders
Sessgnon chips Montpelliers Number 1 to ice the match and Larsson Bouncing Header

"... If Montpellier was more accurate early this would have been a different match, but lady luck was on our side and We walk out unscathed..."

    (A)Flamengo 0-0 Sunderland

Sunderland visits Rio and leaves unscathed as the Defense were able to stifle the dynamic duo of Flamengo. The match ends in a 0-0 draw as Sunderland focused on keeping the match close, unfortunately a impotent Bendtner and Sessengon were unable to answer as poor crosses into the box by Larsson made the offensive game plan of Sunderland moot. Defense was the priority after a 6-4 shoot out in the last friendly as Cattermole kept tabs on the enigmatic Ronaldinho- The Sunderland Defense did not allow a shot on goal in the first half, only to falter slightly in there second were Flamengo were able get open looks- crisp play from Sunderland's number 1 kept the the Brazikians at bay and both Teams walk away to share the points.

"... Our defense is pretty scary out there, but our lack of Offense is much much Scarier- we have been unable to score since our first match, its disappointing we will work on Offense this week, but with the scary Brazilians out of the way we can focus on the rest of the week..."

    (H) Sunderland 1-2 PSV Eidenhoven

Sunderland loses a heartbreaker as PSV Eidenhoven score the go ahead goal in the last few minutes of the match. Gordon parries the attempt on goal at the foot of the PSV Forward, who cooly took his chance to break the home side's supporters. Sunderland goes on the offensive trying desperately to get an equalizer, but superb goal keeping from the visitors keep the score in the PSV's favor. PSV walks away from the Stadium of Lights with all three points.

" We cannot seem to break through, our Defense can hold us competitive for only so long, we need to find a scorer.."

    CUP NEWS

it seems that Sunderland has been drawn once again against his defensive minded sibling in Group E. Sunderland looks to play out this draw and move on into the next round. Parma and Athletic Club are dangerous squads with good managers but with Manager HokieNYC history has proven that he is able to get away from the Group Stages every single Coppa and this Season looks to be no different.

    GROUP E

    (H) SUNDERLAND 0-1 FULHAM
Sunderland loses to Fulham in Cup Play as the visiting side score in the 86th minute as Fulham makes Sunderland pay for near misses during the Match. An open netter missed by El Mohady and N. Bendtner's failure to score in open play doomed the homeside to another Scoreless match.

    (A) SUNDERLAND 3-0 ATHLETIC CLUB
Sunderland dominates cup match to move to 3 points in the group. An unlucky penalty call against the home side started the scoring, Sunderland were unable to beat the chasing Defense of Athletic until the dying minutes when an effective Bendtner was replaced by Campbell who soon influenced the match with quick passing resulting in two goals for Sessegnon in the dying minutes.

    (A) SUNDERLAND 3-1 PARMA

Sunderland advances into the knockout round as they defeat Parma in Italy 3-1. The match looked to be a stalemate as Parma opened up with a highly Defensive formation- forcing Sunderland to push up- Parma draws first blood as they score with a cross that gets pass Gordon. Sessegnon answers with 2 quick goals in a 10 minute span to take the lead at half. Second half was tame as Parma looked to defend their 1 goal deficit, but Bendtner finds the back of the net in the 80th minute to seal the victory and take the Group from Parma.

    (A) Sunderland 1-1 Stoke City

Sundelrand drops two more points in the dying minutes of the match as Stoke City found an equalizer from the unlikeliest of sources- Defende D. Whitehead, with a player all over him fires a shot that catches the far corner of the goal. C. Gordon had no chance Stoke City levels the match in the 86th minute. Once again, Sunderland is left to wonder what could have been as several shots on goal were left wanting. Bendtner has been ineffective and Sessegnon has not show the brilliance he is capable of during the first 6 matches.

"We needed the Win, we had the Win but in the end thats football- it was a superb shot from the Defender, but it was speculative and he came up Winner..."

Sunderland completes a successful 2 game home stand with a win against Corinthians. The Defense was the key as the English side prevented the visiting squad an clear looks on goal, only a superb individual play from the Brazilian striker- a dummy of the ball sprung him from the cage and forced a reflex kick save from C. Gordon. Campbell's pace was too much as he was able to find N. Bendtner for the first goal of the match. Sessegnon ices the game with a beautiful curled shot that caught the Corinthian keeper flat footed. In the end it was a well deserve win for the Black Cats.

" It seems we have found some offense- 7 goals in 3 matches this could be a turning point in our Season..."

    (H) Sunderland 2-0 Werder Bremen

In a rare display of dominance, Sunderland put the visiting Bremen squad to the sword as the Defense smothered any offensive movement by Werder Bremen and lay siege on T. Wiese as they peppered the German Net 14 times through the match while holding Bremen to 3 shots on goal. It has been a good run for Manager HokieNYC against Title Holders Werder Bremen as he has managed to amass a 9-1-1 record against the talented and decorated Manager. Sunderland wins at home 2-0 and gains momentum in Serie A

    (A) Sunderland 3-1 Fulham

In the second meeting for the two Hokie Managers, Sunderland defeats Fulham away, as Sessegnon's brace proved too much for the Craven Cottage stalwarts to overcome. The match was well ion hand as Fulham were shackled by Sunderland's Defense- only getting two shots on target- one on a corner that dropped in front of Dembele during the challenge in front of goal, which he cheekily lobbed over Gordon. Aside form that neat finish the better side of the day was Sunderland who continues their undefeated run to towards the end of the first half of the Season.

" I do think our speed in Sessegnon and Campbell were too much for Fulham- they were so focused on not getting beat they allowed Bendtner space which he used effectively to spring Sessegnon into scoring chances...."

    (H) Sunderland 2-2 Borussia M’Gladbach

Sunderland drops two points as Borrussia MOngladbach scores 2 goals in 90th minute to steal a point. Sunderland failed to play till the final whistle and Sub Hanke makes the Black Cats pay. In a match that Sunderland controlled, Sessegnon tallies up the first goal as Campbell finds him in front of the box-Sessegnon coolly curls a shot away from O'Shea doubles the lead as Larsson finds him on a set piece, to end the half. Second half found more of the same as Sunderland controls the tempo of the match. In the 90th minute - Reus finds Sub Hanke unmarked in the box and he puts away the Germans first goal.

In a tactical mistake Sunderland goes for corner and were made to pay as the quick counter initiated by Keeper Stegen found a streaking Hanke who out runs the entire Sunderland Defense, as he beats Gordon one on one for the equalizer.

"3 matches lost in the dying minutes - this hurts as much as a loss as we played well for 90 minutes... And it was only good for a draw ..."

In a tightly contested match, Sunderland fell short oin Russia as they are defeated 2-1 by CSKA Moscow. It was a match of missed chances as Sessegnon and Bendtner failed to score on open looks. The only goal coming from a surprise shot from K. Richardson as he was able to curl a shot away from a shocked Akinev who was caught out of position.

"... missing opportunities against a great squad usually means a loss- so the result was not surprising. .."

Sunderland effectively ends the Championship run of Ajax as they score in the 80th minute to steal a draw from the visiting Ajax. The match was a tightly contested affair, and with Ajax looking to take all three points S. Larsson finds a sliding O'Shea who re directs the ball towards goal for the equalizer.

Sunderland ends their Season in predictable manner as they draw against visiting Stoke City. Sessegnon strikes early but a 8 minute lapse in the 1st half put the visiting side up 2-1. A weak parry by Gordon, allows Jerome to run from afar to tap in the rebound. A dubious PK call against Stoke City awards the Homeside an equalizer- in the end, the Final Match of the Season reflects the way Sunderland played all Season Long- average.
