It was only a friendly, but it was still a rather big scalp. Not only a Premier League team, but a Spanish giant. A single strike by Aaron Hunt in the first half was enough for Bremen to walk away with a victory. Manager Thomas Schaaf called the victory "momentous" and "extremely important".
"It was a momentous victory, without a doubt. To win against a team like this, before a season, is extremely important. Not winning would not have hurt us, but winning will help us."

There is no better way to start out a season than with three points. It's a fact that can not be argued. Even though it's early, it's a big first step on the way to promotion. Can a side win promotion without that first win? Absolutely. However, it sure is a lot easier to start out ahead than behind.
Bremen have done just that by defeating CSKA Moscow in Russia, 2-0. The goals came from Pizarro and Hunt, both in the first half. Pizarro got on the end of a Marin pass and was able to square up to goal and fire in a hard shot past the keeper. Hunt was fed by the left back Schmitz, and awkwardly finished with the outside of his left foot.
Manager Thomas Schaaf was very pleased after the game, but was not about to get ahead of himself:
"We played well, but they had chances to make it level. They were a bit unlucky. It was more of their luck than our ability. So, we must be thankful. It's a long season, but starting out this way is fantastic. However, it means nothing if we don't keep our momentum going."

It's the start that all Bremen fans had dreamed of and the start the Bremen players have deserved. Bremen continued their extended time on the road, this time defeating Liverpool in a decisive fashion at Anfield. The game was firmly in control for Bremen after the 26th minute, when Marin put the side up by two goals. Just three minutes prior, Pizarro netted what would be his first of three goals for the day. It was a dominating performance by The Green-Whites, with the only blemish being a Suarez goal for Liverpool. A goal that center back Naldo will not allow to slip through the cracks when he addressed the media:
"We shouldn't give up any goals. Everyone is focused on us scoring four, but we're focused on us giving up one. If we want to win promotion, we can not allow the opponent to score."
Bremen's next two games are against Porto of Portugal and French side Lille. Hat trick scorer Pizarro told the press that they must win at least one of those matches:
"We can not afford to not win one of those. Nine points to start a season our of twelve would be excellent and would put us where we want to be."
