Will Hill has been impressive in the Gators early practice sessions

Florida must retool and reload on defense if they plan to be a factor in the SEC. As Fall practice has kicked off, Will Hill has been impressive in the early going. "Will Hill must be the all-time great that we expected him to be this season" said Urban Meyer. "It's a must" he continued. Hill has been waiting patiently to be a full time starter for the Gator defense. He has been a starter in their nickel and 3-3-5 defensive formations. Now, he will not come off the field. paired with All-SEC selection Ahmad Black and corner Janoris Jenkins, the Gator secondary shouldn't miss a beat.

The new look Gators almost blew it. The #6 Florida Gators host in-state foe South Florida and the game came down to the final minute. Florida struggled for consistency on offense all day. Jeff Demps and Emmanuel Moody would be lost to injury early on in this one. That left Mike Gillislee to handle the backfield duties. he responded with 120 yards and two TD's that but that but the Gators on top for good. John Brantley thew for nealy 200 yards and a score but was also threw a TD to the other team. Florida struggled to protect brantley as he was hit constantly. However, BJ Daniels, the Bulls QB had little to no pressure all night. Florida dropped 7-8 easy interceptions as well. The defensive highlight of the game came on the first play from scrimmage when Will Hill knocked loose a caught pass resulting ina fumble recovery for Jelani Jenkins and setting up the Gators opening FG.

    3-0

John Brantley and the Florida Gators were able to handle the Tennessee Vols 23-7. Brandon Hicks had a big sack and a 60 yard pick six on the day for the Gator Defense. The lone hiccup was a 70+ yard TD pass to D. Rogers from QB N. Nance. Jeff Demps, Mike Gillislee and Emmanuel Moody combined to go over 100 yards and a score. Deonte Thompson caught a 78 yard TD pass from Brantley as well.

    OFFENSE

    Quarterbacks:

John Brantley heads up this unit again. Last year Brantley fought inconsistency and was equally good and bad with 18 TD's and 18 INT's. Trey Burton and Juco signee Blake Wallace wil battle throughout the season for the back up nod each week. Expect Brantley to improve his accuracy and decision making to become a finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award. Don't be shocked to see Burton put into a roll where he can use his athleticism to spark this offense.

    Running backs
    [IMG]
Jeff Demps returns with nearly 1,000 yards from scrimmage last season. He is ready for a break out season. Demps may be the first back to rush for 1,000 yards since Earnest Graham in 2002. Mike Gillislee is a name Gator fans are familiar with as he has produced some highlight reel runs and grounded out tough yards when he is called on. Highley touted RFR Mack Brown will see some action as well.

    Wide Receivers
    [IMG]
As usual, this group will be relied upon heavily for the Gator offense to gel. Chris Rainey, Deonte Thompson and Omarius Hines head up this group. Rainey and Thompson were starters last year and provided big play potential. Hines saw limited action but will be the starting X receiver this year. Andre Debose will see more plays packaged for him this season as well. Chris Dunkley is the 5th man on the depth chart but will see plenty of action in the slot this fall.

    Tight Ends

No depth in this group what so ever. Desmond Parks and Gerald Christian will share the duties. Christian worked his way into the starter's roll. Parks was very productive last season so this will be more of a two headed monster at the position.

    Offensive Line
    [IMG]

This was a weak spot for the Gators last year. Brantley took way too many hits and the running game was inconsitent at best. Look for Seniors James Wilson and Sam Robey, too lead a mixture of experience in this group. Xavier Nixon has to play better protecting Brantley's blindside along with 1st year starter Nick Alajajian.

The Florida Gators ended the regular season 9-3. They won the SEC East division title this season and are preparing to go to Atlanta to take on the might Crimson Tide. Florida relied heavily on the right arm of John Brantley. He surpassed 3500 passing yards on the season. He spread the ball around to Chris Rainey, Chris Dunkley, Gerald Christian, Omarius Hines, Andre Debose and Deonte Thompson. Florida's passing game and occassional contribution from Jeff Demps and Mike Gillislee paved the way for a fairly successful season.

On the defensive side of the ball, the bright spot had to be the play of DT Jaye Howard. He was disruptive in the middle all season long. Newcomer Eric O'Donnell proved his ranking by ESPNU was not a fluke as he landed in the top 5-7 in tackles for the season. He made big plays on special teams coverage as well. Jelani Jenkins and Jon Bostic had nice seasons at the LB position as well.

What is in store for the Gators in 2012? You will not see the high flying aerial attack that you saw the 2011 season. Trey Burton is in line to take over the QB job and the Gator coaching staff would be stupid not to take advantage of his athletic ability.

    FLORIDA GATORS SEC CHAMPS 2011

Brantley and the defense come through in the 4th
John Brantley threw for over 400 yards and a couple td's against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. The second Td proved to be the biggest as e would find freshman Adrian Coxson in the middle of the endzone with 5 seconds to play. That ended a 16 point 4th quarter rally. The Gators went into the final quarter down by 15. Jelani Jenkins would stop Lacey the replacement runningback to Trent Richardson in his tracks in the endzone for 2. Trey Burton would find Omarius Hines for a TD and then Brantley worked his magic again. This is how the Gators have gotten it done all season, why stop now. A SEC Championship BCS Bowl bid should help bolster recruiting this offseason as the Gators have some spots to fill.
Urban Meyer : This is the identity of this team. Grind one out, wait to the last possible second and come through with a win. It was another great 4th quarter for us and Johnny just added to his legend.

The future is bright in Gainesville. In the Gator's Sugar Bowl win vs Rutgers, Matt Elam, Trey Burton, and Ronald Powell all contributed to the win. These three will be relied upon heavily next year to keep the Gators moving forward. Burton will have the biggest challenge of all, replacing John Brantley. Brantley led the Gators on 5 or 6 fourth quarter/OT come from behind wins this season. He also broke the single season yardage mark held by Rex Grossman. Burton will never match those numbers because Florida most likely will become more balanced and maybe a shade run oriented on offense.

Ronald Powell had a monster game. He was named Sugar Bowl MVP. He ahd 6 tackles 4for a loss, 2 sacks, interception return for a TD and a Forced fumble. This was his coming out party, next year will be huge for him. Matt Elam made some ball jarring hits and sealed the game with an interception as Rutgers drived for a win.
