Oxford Mississippi - This season has been a roller coaster. Very tough loss to JMS that we still feel we should have won. A loss to Nebraska, then some decent cpu wins, then a bad loss to Georgia and another bad loss to Alabama left us 4-4 and scrambling for answers. Tonight we traveled to Oxford to face Hellisan and his #5 Rebels. I didn't hold out much hope. This Tennessee team is beat up. We have injuries at a few positions, and are starting our 3rd string HB. We've been battered and bruised, and this game started in that same fashion. Ole Miss jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the 2nd quarter and it was becoming apparent that we couldn't compete with this type of team on the road. After forcing Ole Miss to punt with less than a minute left in the 1st half (he was getting the ball back at the half mind you), they muffed a punt about 15 yards to close to mid field. My returner coughed it up on a big hit and that was run back by a Rebel ST specialist to make the score 24-3. And now it's over right? Wrong. A few plays later we threw a great td pass to DeAnthony Arnett on a 9 route that beat his cover two to make the half time score 24-10 Ole Miss. Since he was running me in the first half I had no expectations that the game would get any closer than this. However the tables started to turn.....we owned the 2nd half, as we have done a few times this year. We got an interception mid 3rd quarter inside the Ole Miss side of the field and were able to grab a FG off of that to make it 24-13. The entire 2nd half we played very stellar defense. Ole Miss never threatened again in the 3rd quarter. We scored another Td, this one by 3rd team RB Devrin Young to cut the lead to 24-19 with about 7:30 left. We missed the 2 point conversion so the score stayed there. Ole Miss got the ball back and methodically pushed the rock all the way down the field. They killed clock, ground out yards, and really looked like they were going to put it away. But they threw an int in the endzone with about 2 minutes to go and we foolishly ran it out of the endzone to the 5 yard line. Tennessee takes over, 1st & 10 from the 5, 3 timeouts, and an offense that has lost us at least 2 user games already. This time, with much less on the line, we turned into a real offense. We started chipping off 5 yards here, 14 yards there and even converted a 4th down to keep moving the ball down to the Ole Miss side of the field. We strung together a 10+ play drive, 95 yards, with even a few runs mixed in that ended up in the endzone with 17 seconds left. We hit the 2 pt conversion to make it 27-24. Ole Miss ran a few plays but were not able to challenge the endzone to end the game. And Tennessee get's their first T1 user win! Good game Hellisan this team has been a great 2nd half team all year....I was really surprised that they got off the mat this time. But like they say, that's why you play the game.
