Tennessee opened up the 2012 football season against the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes. Trying to lay the ground work for the rest of the season Tennessee came out and pounded the ball on the ground led by first year starter Rajon Neal who amassed over 100 yards on the ground and a huge td run of 50+ yards. The Tennessee defense stepped up and played huge by not allowing the Tulsa offense to pass the 50 yard line all game. Playing this well allowed many of the backups who do not get to see much playing a chance to get in there and show the Tennessee coaches what they got. Tennessee went on to take this season opening game 41-0.

We caught up with new Tennessee head coach ctvolfan after the game.

How does it feel to get this first W?
It feels good we still have a lot of work to do but getting a win no matter who it is
    feels good.

With the defense playing like they did today how far do you see this team going?
This team will go as far as the defense takes them. It's no mystery to win the SEC and to go
further you need a tough and nasty defense. So only time will tell.

What are you early impressions of next weeks opponent Arizona St?
I have not had the opportunity to watch a whole lot of game film, but in recent history
the offenses of the Pac 12 have been soaring above the rest. If we want to have a chance
the defense along with our 102,000 fans are going to have to show up ready to play
    and too make some noise.

    Thanks coach!

The Tennessee Volunteer football team faced their first big challenge of the football season when Pac 12 opponent Arizona st. traveled to Knoxville. The game was a defensive struggle throughout the entire game. The Tennessee defense really came to play as they only allowed the high powered sun devil offense to only 134 total yards. As the defense was playing there butts off the offense was struggling to put together a decent drive. Then finally as the first quarter was winding down UT QB Tyler Bray hit a streaking Justin Hunter down the sideline and down to the 3 yard line. Next play RB Rajon Neal pounded the ball in for the games only offensive TD.

Late in the 4th quarter as ASU was driving QB Brock Osweiler threw a pick 6 to SS Brent Brewer, which pretty much sealed the game.

Rocky top news caught up with starting RB Rajon Neal after the game.

Rajon how did it feel to rush for over 100 yards against such a good opponent?
It felt great but I have to give a lot of credit to the offensive line for opening such big holes for me to run through.

You got Penn st up next how do you feel about going up against there D?
Its going to be tough. They are not Linebacker U for no reason. To be successful I feel we are going to have to make some plays on the ground.

    Thanks Rajon

    Up Next: @ Penn st

    Vols leave Happy Valley Humbled

The 2-0 Tenneessee vols traveled to Happy Valley, PA on Saturday to take on the #1 team in the country
Penn st. Tennessee comes in riding some momentum of beating a good Pac 12 opponent last week.
Both teams started out trying to get a feel for the other with Penn st striking first with a td pass to
TE Collin Chandler covering 24 yards. Tennessee answered back early in the second quarter with
a huge td run by Rajon Neal that went for 44 yards. Though, Tennessee tied the game that would about
be there last good highlight for the rest of the game. Shortly after the big td rush QB Tyler Bray makes a costly
mistake of not seeing the olb playing the flats when he is picked off by Khairi Fortt and returns the pick for six.
Tennessee would answer with a field goal before the half.

In the second half Penn st came out pounding the rock behind RB Silas Redd who only ended up with
46 yards on the day but kept the Tennessee defense on its toes all night. With the game plan of running the ball
down Tennessee's throat in second half they turned it over to the defense to finish the vols off. They stacked the box
and challenged Tyler Bray to beat them. That gameplan worked to perfection as the Vols offense was shutout in the second half.

We caught up with a dissapointed Tyler Bray after the game:

    Tyler, your thoughts?
They were just the better team today. I place a lot of the blame on my shoulders for this
loss and it's going to take some time to get over it.

With Florida coming to Knoxville next week what will your mindset be going into that game?
As we all know Florida is a huge rival for us and just because they are not ranked this season does not
mean they are not dangerous. Look for another tough SEC game to be played and hopefully we will
    come out on top.

Thanks Tyler, and good luck against the gators next week.
