Texas Longhorns-Season 2

Fourth Quarter Explosion Propels Longhorns to Victory, 37-17...

    Plays of the Game:

Gilbert to Payne for the 11 yard strike. Nice anticipation on the part of the RS Freshman.

Great heads up play by the Offensive lineman forcing a turnover off a fluke turnover. This allowed Texas to get a field goal before half and tie the game.

Great Special Teams play that resulted in 7 points for the Longhorns. This Touchdown put the Longhorns up for good in the 4th quarter.

Herbstreit: Coach that was an impressive win on the road against a good Oregon team, talk about it...
Coach Era: I'm very proud of our football team for coming into a very hostile environment with extremely loud fans and fighting for a win. This place was really rocking for all four quarters and it caused us a lot of issues in the game early on.

Herbstreit: The RS Freshman Quarterback Gilbert got the start over Harris. Harris was believed to be the starter through out the preseason, what changed?
Coach Era: Well to be honest it was an open competition throughout practice and we just felt like Gilbert gave us more of what we were looking for at that position. Harris has great speed and athleticism but that isn't a big part of our ideas when it comes to the quarterback position.

    Herbstreit: Happy with the decision?
Coach Era: Extremely...The young man showed all the Longhorn fans why he is our starting quarterback. He played consistent and dealt with the extreme noise that comes with playing on the road. Now, he did start off slow but worked himself into a nice groove as the game went on. Going...17 out of 23 for 247 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception is more than we could have asked for in his first start. Probably the biggest stat that he had for the game was the fact he hit 7 different Receivers in the passing game.

Herbstreit: Early impressions of your defense and how they played in this game?
Coach Era: Defense played good early and great late. Oregon came out with a good game plan on offense with that FleXbox One/Triple Option, this is the first time in my tenure here that we have faced this style of offense and I think the boys responded well. They ended the day giving up 0 yards on the ground. As the game went on, we felt like they were starting to get a feel for what Oregon was trying to do and we made the right adjustments.

Next up is the Game of the Week with Texas staying inside the state of Oregon for a matchup with #12 Oregon St. A lot of talk by Oregon St. early in the season has Texas looking forward to this game...

Oregon St. Failed to Back Up Those Big Words...

After a lot of preseason talk between the two teams, Texas finally traveled to Oregon St to take on The Beavers. This was The Longhorns second road game in the state. The Beavers had high hopes off taking down the #1 Ranked, defending BCS Champions but Texas had plans of establishing Oregon as Longhorn Country. On a very rainy day in Oregon, Texas dominated the Beavers from start to finish in a 47-0 victory. Texas started fast on offense and never let up. Gilbert had a great performance and left the game late in the third quarter. The backup, Harris saw some playing time and made the most of it by throwing two touchdowns. After a good performance from Harris some people are starting to ask the question, will he see more playing time in the weeks to come? The ground game was solid for the Longhorns with an explosive play by McGee with his 64 yard touchdown in the second half. This was a good performance overall by the Offense and gave us a glimpse into the potential for the season. The Defense turned in a stellar effort by pitching the shutout on the road. Oregon St only entered the redzone one time on the day only to be Intercepted by All American, Strong Safety, Gideon. The Beavers never got the ground game against that #1 Ranked Rush Defense. It seems like The Longhorns Defense hasn't skipped a beat from the title run last year. Texas did lose Defensive Captain, All American, Free Safety, Thomas for the season. Nothing official from the team yet but sources say its a Broken Collarbone. This shouldn't be too big of an issue with the tremendous depth in the Secondary. Texas travels back home for their first Home game of the year against PAC 10 opponent, UCLA. The Longhorns could end up sweeping the PAC 10 opponents this season and set them up nicely for Confernce play. The way it looks now Texas could be on pace for another National Title run under Coach Era...

    Longhorns hold Court...

Texas wins home opener 45-13 over UCLA...

Texas got a win in their first home game of the season against another Pac 10 opponent. UCLA came in with great intensity and held the Longhorns in check for pretty much the first half but what a difference another two quarters makes. The second half was all Texas, all the time. Harris got the starting spot at quarterback for the Longhorns and went 12/24 for 105 yards. The Longhorns inserted Gilbert in at that spot at the beginning of the third quarter and the kid never looked back. Gilbert was 7/11 for 122 yards with 1 touchdown. Nine different players had at least one reception for Texas. Word is the kid won the starting job, bar a complete meltdown from this point on. Texas was able to establish the run throughout which was evident with McGee having 27 carries for 218 yards and 5 touchdowns. McGee also played a part in the passing game with his 4 receptions for 16 yards and 1 touchdown, giving him 6 total on the day. UCLA never got their ground game going against the #1 Ranked Rush Defense in the Nation and was forced to pass most of the game. Texas turned the Bruins over 3 times during the game adding to the #1 Ranking in Turnover Differential. Texas held UCLA to 15% on 3rd down conversions and going 46% on their end.

Next up: Florida Atlantic...Texas may start a few true Freshmen at some positions and try to get them some game experience early, hoping it pays off later this season or even into next season.

2-0 in Red River Rivalry Under Coach Era...

Texas stays unbeaten after a 38-29 victory over Oklahoma

Corso: Big win against Big 12 Rival, Oklahoma, Coach. What was the difference in this game?

Coach Era: Turnovers...We knew going in that this would be a big part of the game and we won that battle by a +3 margin. Special Teams played a big part in this game giving us good field position both on returns and defending returns...Our Defense played lights out against a very high powered Oklahoma attack.

Corso: It seemed pretty evident early that Oklahoma's plan was to spread you out on Defense and attack with a Spread Passing attack...For the most part your Defense kept them in check, talk about it...

Coach Era: Yeah, we knew going into it that Oklahoma under new coach, WhyGodWhy, wanted to use a lot of 4 and 5 receiver sets. All week in practice we just talked to our guys about keeping everything in front of them and being in their spots inside the defense. Holding Oklahoma to 2 field goals on both their red zone attempts gave us a tremendous advantage. When you go against an Offense like that you have to be very disciplined in your approach to coverage. I think we were able to accomplish that especially with our 5 Interceptions on the day. The front 7 did a great job getting pressure on Jones and we were able to pick up 6 sacks...That is one good thing about a passing attack that throws the ball 43 times in a game, it kind of takes the guess work out and allowed us to get after the quarterback and play great coverage.

Corso: That Rush Defense of yours is something special, #1 in the country...Didn't seem like Oklahoma had an answer for that.

Coach Era: Well when a team only runs the ball 15 times for 11 yards, I think its a good day at the office for the Defense. Our Defense returned a Interception for a touchdown and thats always a big plus. We have some real playmakers on Defense...Gideon is playing out of his mind right now and is a very big leader on the field, they guy caused another turnover giving him 5 in 5 games.

Corso: The Offense, was just as they always are, efficient...

Coach Era: Gilbert is starting to come into a zone and is playing really well for our team. When you go 13/17 for 209 yards with 2 TD's, that always helps...Now the 2 interceptions weren't good at all but he is getting better at taking care of the ball. Kirkendoll stepped up big time with 4 receptions for 102 yards and a score...I thought Gilbert did a good job hitting the open receiver and not forcing too many balls. McGee came back after missing two weeks with a hamstring and picked up right where he left off...20 carries for 103 yards and a score late in the 4th quarter.

Corso: With that win, a lot of folks are talking about a repeat...

Coach Era: Way to early to even think about that...We have Baylor up next and thats what we have to stay focused on...The wins will come if we can continue to execute.

Texas escapes Nebraska to remain unbeaten, 24-20...

Texas traveled to Nebraska putting their undefeated season on the line against a much improved Big 12 opponent in the Huskers. Nebraska gave Texas all they could handle for the entire game but Texas was able to make two key plays late in the game to preserve the undefeated season. In the game the Huskers picked off RS Freshman QB, Gilbert, 6 times and caused 2 fumbles giving the Huskers 8 turnovers on the day. Even with those turnovers the Longhorns were able to pull off the victory by riding the legs of star RB, McGee, who had over 150 yards on the day...and the Defense played really well considering how much time they spent on the field with the Offense having its worst day yet under Coach Era. Junior SS, Gideon, made some big "splash" plays for the Defense and Texas was able to keep Nebraska out of the endzone, all things considered. Talk around Austin has the Longhorns taking a good look at true Freshman QB, Small, this week in practice and paying close attention to Gilbert. We don't look for a change but I would tend to believe that if Gilbert has a game like that again, Small will see the field. Small did have 3 attempts with 3 completions against Nebraska when Gilbert went out for a few plays due to a injury to his hip. The Longhorns are getting into the thick part of their Conference Schedule and will have to play much better in the weeks to come, especially if they plan on attaining their goal by winning Back to Back National Titles.

    Texas Takes down Tech, 44-10...

Texas pretty much dominated the entire game due to an overpowering running game lead by McGee and Johnson. Both Backs had over 100 yards on the day and 3 scores combined. Gilbert rebounded against Tech after throwing 6 Picks last week, this week he went 21/26 with 2 TD's and 0 Int's! Both of Gilbert's Td's went to All American TE, Irby...The Defense played great against the run only giving up 20 yds on the day and forced a few turnovers along with a Safety. On the day the Longhorns Defense was able to get 8 Pass Deflections, 3 coming from Freshman MLB, Earnest, who is starting to make his presense felt in the Longhorns 3-4 defense. Next up for the Longhorns, Oklahoma St. Texas needs an impressive win over the Cowboys in order to get back the #1 BCS Ranking that now belongs to Coach Brave and his Buckeyes...

Johnson joined the party against Tech with one of his TD runs here. Johnson and McGee both had over 100 yards rushing in the game.

Texas Remains Undefeated After a 4th Quarter Comeback Against OSU...

Texas received a scare in Week 10 against Oklahoma State having to come from behind the entire game for the 4th Quarter Win. Oklahoma State was able to do what most teams in 2 seasons haven't been able to do...run the ball with success. OSU racked up 78 yards on the ground off 30 carries, one being a long TD run. Texas was able to run the ball all game on OSU, picking up 190 yards on 32 carries with 1 TD. McGee had 161 of those yards on 25 carries and the Rushing Touchdown, this guy is proving to be a very good work house for the Longhorns. Gilbert faired pretty good, except his 3 Int's...throwing for 287 yards on 17/30 with 2 TD's. Kirkendoll showed up big when it counted for the Longhorns with his 5 Rec for 107 yards and 1 TD. Robinson was finally able to life up to the expectations and had a career day with his 4 tks, 2 tfl, and 1 Int; that he returned for 25 yards and a score. Going into the 4th quarter, The Longhorns were down 23-24 but an 18 point explosion along with the Defense pitching a shutout in the 4th lead to another win. With 4:17 left in the 4th quarter, McGee punched it in and Coach Era decided to go for the 2 point conversion in order to give the Longhorns a 7 point lead. Gilbert hit Kirkendoll in the back of the endzone for the successful 2 point play, giving them a 7 point lead. With 2:05 left in the 4th quarter, Gilbert hits Kirkendoll on a 63 yard TD pass, pretty much sealing the deal.

Gilbert throws a strike to Kirkendoll with 2:05 left in the 4th qurter, giving the Longorns a 14 point lead and they never looked back.

Once again the Gilbert and Kirkendoll connection proves to be beneficial with this 2 point conversion late in the 4th quarter giving the Longhorns a 7point advantage.
