2008 Record: (13-1, 7-1)

2008 Bowl: BCS National Championship vs. Oklahoma (W 24-14)

Coach: Urban Meyer (44-9 at Florida, 83-17 overall)
Offensive Coordinator: Steve Addazio
Defensive Coordinator: Charlie Strong

Returning Leaders

Rushing: Tim Tebow, QB, 673 yards
Passing: Tim Tebow, QB, 2,746 yards
Receiving: Aaron Hernandez, TE, 381 yards
Tackles: Brandon Spikes, LB, 93
Sacks: Carlos Dunlap, DE, 9.5
Interceptions: Ahmad Black, S, 7

Other Key Returnees: WR Riley Cooper, DE Jermaine Cunningham, CB Joe Haden, CB Janoris Jenkins, LB A.J. Jones, DT Lawrence Marsh, C Maurkice Pouncey, RB Chris Rainey, DT Terron Sanders, LB Ryan Stamper, DE Justin Trattou, S Major Wright

Key Losses: WR Percy Harvin, WR Louis Murphy, OT Phil Trautwein, OT Jason Watkins

Besides a little slip up against Mississippi, Florida dominated everybody they played. The closest games the Gators played besides the loss was an 11 point game over Alabama in the SEC Championship Game and a ten point win against Oklahoma in the National Championship. Now that is domination. With the return of Tim Tebow, the Gators are the favorites to do it again.

The strength of this team is not the offense and Tebow, it is the defense. Not only does the unit return all 11 starters, but every defensive player that saw any real playing time is back.

The Gators will have to overcome two obstacles this season in order to be successful. One will be filling the holes left by graduating seniors on the offensive line with young inexperienced freshman. And two will be trying to find a playmaker to replace Percy "Oh Mercy" Harvin.

2009 Recruiting Class

Scholarships available: 12 SR + 2 leaving early + 3 buffer + (70-68) = 19

2009 will be a big recruiting class for the Gators. With He15sman set to graduate this spring, the Tebow era at Florida will finally come to a close. The gators will also lose 3 potential first round draft picks in Sr MLB B. Spikes, Jr DE C. Dunlap and Jr FS M. Wright. While the gators depth chart is stacked, there will be some holes to fill. The most notable needs are MLB and QB as well as WR where the Gators will need to replace 3 graduating starters.

Well, we're not even through week one yet and Coach Sherm has been hard on the recruiting trail. The Gators have already picked up commitments from 2 four star prospects.

WR Anthony Martinez 5'11" 173 lbs 4*
DT Kevin Daniels 6'1" 321 lbs 4*

Martinez will provide an answer to the already mounting questions about who will John Brantley throw to next year.
Daniels will provide another solid depth to an already stacked position to ensure nobody runs up the middle for years to come.

Week 1 North Texas Mean Green vs UF

Team 1Q 2Q 3Q 4Q Final
North Texas 0 6 7 0 13

Not Everything is Bigger in Texas!!!

The Gators opened up their 2009 campaign by dismantling the North Texas Green Machine.

The defending national champions opened up with a defensive 3 and out and as soon NT punted, the route was on. Brandon James fielded the kick and after some nifty footwork took it to the house from 67 yards out.

The Green Machine was simply overmatched on both sides of the ball today. UF was able to stop them whenever they put their mind to it and score at will. The game was so bad halfway through the 3rd quarter the starters day's were over.

Players of the Game:
Game Ball J. Demps player of the game, 9 car 115 yds 2 TDs
T. Tebow 10/11 174 yds 3 TDs, 8 car 22 yds
W. Pierre Louis, J. Haden, B. Spikes, and C. Dunlap 1 INT each. (Dunlap scored on his)

Troy 7 0 0 7 14
UF 21 7 0 7 35

In their final tune up before opening SEC conference play against Tennessee in week three, UF takes care of business at home vs Troy.

Coach Sherm had this to say about the game:

"We came out fast and really got on them. Unfortunately after the first quarter I think our players became lackadaisical so we didn't finish as strong as I'd like to see. We also didn't do a very great job protecting the QB today, we'll have to fix that this week in practice. Man, Timmy had a great day for us today though!"

Players of the Game:
Game Ball Tim Tebow 15/20 318 yds 2 TDs, 13 car 40 yds 3 TDs
Riley Cooper 4 rec 103 yds
Deonte Thompson 4 rec 114 yds 1 TD

Welcome to the SEC!!!

In the new Mouth of the South's first taste of SEC action, Lane Kiffin traveled to the Swamp and learned a very valuable lesson. "You know why they call it the Swamp? Cause only the Gators come out alive!!!"

The game was no contest from the start. UT won the coin toss and elected to receive. That was their first mistake. The home crowd was so fired up about this game you couldn't hear yourself think. After a couple plays, UT BJ Coleman found WR Todd Campbell over the middle for what looked like a big gain and what would take the crowd out of the game. Except when Campbell turned up field, SS Ahmad Black was waiting.

On the ensuing Gators possession, Tebow capped off the drive with a 2 yd TD run, his first of two on the day. In an interview after the game, Tebow had this to say, "We've had this day circled on our calendar since January. We had the opportunity to go settle a score for our coach and we wanted to make sure we did that today."

The big loss of the day was WR Deonte Thompson who was injured in the first quarter and will likely miss the next two weeks. This will give 5 star freshman Andre Debose his first opportunity to get solid time on the field and display his talents. Also, SR WR David Nelson will see more action over Thompsons absence.

In his post game interview, Coach Sherm had this to say, "Well, it looks like Lane won't be singing on Rocky Top all night long like he thought!"

Players of the Game:
Game Ball Tim Tebow 15/21 331 yds 2 TDs, 13 car 9 yds 2 TDs
J. Demps 15 car 59 yds TD
M. Wright 3 tackles, INT

Gators Victorious on Road Trip

The Gators traveled to Lexington this weekend for their first road game of the 09 season. They defeated the Wildcats 38 - 17.

Throughout the offseason, questions surrounded the Gators offense about how effective it would be with the loss of Percy Harvin. So far this season, UF had relied on Tebow to carry them offensively and no other players had emerged as stars yet. That all changed in Kentucky Saturday.

Many anticipated another huge passing game from Tebow, but that wasn't the case as the Gators rushing attack came into the game hungry. UF racked up 279 of their 322 total yards on the ground. Thanks largely to Tebow and Demps. Also supplementing the offense was Sr playmaker/kick returner Brandon James who took tallied his second punt return TD of the year on the 4th play from scrimmage going 80 yards to the house.

On the ensuing kickoff, UF CB Wondy Pierre Louis made a great from behind tackle causing a fumble and LB Brandon Hicks recovered. Tebow took the field again and marched the Gators to the end zone to go up 14-0.

The Gators ground attack continued it's onslaught and capped off the scoring in the 3rd quarter with this 61 yd run by Jeffrey Demps.

UK HB Derrick Locke was the lone bright spot on UK's roster. He racked up 93 yds on 17 carries verses a stacked UF defense. Many of these yards came late in the 4th as UF was playing prevent defense and UK insisted on continuing to run the ball.

After the game, Tebow had this to say: "Over the past few weeks you could see the O line getting frustrated that we haven't been as consistent on the ground. This week in practice they really got after it and came together as a unit. All it takes is a couple blocks when you have a speedster like Demps carrying the rock".

Silence in Death Valley

The Gators took care of their toughest game on their schedule this year, heading to Death Valley and coming out with a victory.

When asked by reporters earlier in the week, Tebow stated, "Death Valley is my favorite place to play besides the Swamp. The atmosphere there is intense and it really gets me pumped up to play my best."

Here's the highlights from the game:

In the first quarter, LSU struck first when Jordan Jefferson connected with Lafell for a 60+ yd TD pass putting LSU up 0-7 and igniting the home crowd.

The Gators would respond on their ensuing possession when Tebow hit WR Carl Moore streaking down the left sideline w/a perfectly placed throw for a 69 yd TD. (However, EA is stupid and the video is unable to be uploaded. Sick play though.)

After a few exchanges of possession, Tebow struck again. This time he connected with Deonte Thompson, who in his first game back from injury, took it to the house from 64 yds out. Gators 14 -7 in the first.

LSU wouldn't respond again until the third quarter when Jefferson connected on his second TD of the game.

Finally, the Gators D proved to be too much in this one for the LSU offense to handle. In the 4th, J. Cunningham breaks through the line and brings down Jefferson forcing a fumble that Jefferson would recover in the end zone for a safety.

After the game, Coach Sherm had this to say: "What a game. The team really performed well today. Sophomore sensation Will Hill had a coming out party today. And J. Cunningham and Tebow were huge for us as well. Anytime you can come here to Death Valley and get a win you're extremely happy".

Victorious Gators

The Gators kept rolling along Saturday, defeating visiting Arkansas in the Swamp.

The game was close early as both teams struggled to get any offense going. That changed in the second quarter when Tebow took over and led the Gators to 17 second quarter points. To lead 20-3 at halftime.

In the second half, Arkansas came out fired up and did their best to turn this game back into a contest. Arkansas would score 14 unanswered points to cut the Gators lead to 10. That was as close as the Razorbacks would get.

On the ensuing possession, Tebow connected with Aaron Hernandez for a 51 yd strike, setting up a Jeffrey Demps 8 yd TD run to put the Gators back out in front by 17.

On Arkansas next possession, transfer quarterback Ryan Mallet attempted an ill advised pass that was tipped by Sr LB Brandon Spikes and caught by So safety Will Hill. This setup a drive capped off by a 3 yd Emanuel Moody TD run to put the game out of reach.

In his post game interview, Coach Sherm had this to say: "This was a really weird game. Arkansas defensive gameplan coming into this one consisted of making Tebow beat them. That's something we've never seen before. They insisted on blanketing our WRs in double coverage but leaving Tebow wide open all day. I really doubt we'll see that gameplan again. Then, on the other side of the ball. Arkansas was running around like a chicken with its head cut off. When we'd blitz, Mallet wouldn't even look for a WR, he'd just throw the ball up for grabs and amazingly his WR would morph to the ball and make the catch. I don't know how many times our shut down corner Joe Haden was beat in man coverage by sub par WRs. I'm really left scratching my head after this one."

Apologies to Dan Mullen

Perhaps leaving UF and taking another job in the SEC isn't the best thing to do for your career. Dan Mullen found that out Saturday as Mississippi State hosted the University of Florida Gators.

This game was a no contest. The Gators ran over, around, and through the bulldogs as well as threw the ball all over the field. After the game Dan Mullen had this to say: "Wow, I knew they were good, but they made us look like a high school JV team today. They moved the ball at will and there wasn't anything we could do to stop them. Gonna need a lot more recruits to compete on that level."

Coach Sherm had this to say: "We really didn't mean to run up the score on the bulldogs, we simply ran our offense and they were unable to stop us. The offensive line played amazing today and Tebow had all day to find WRs. And our defense wasn't stifling, but they ball hawked and played a bend but don't break style. It's a great game for us to take the momentum from and carry it into the UGA game next week."

Here's some highlights:

Florida Says "That Dawg Don't Hunt!"

The memories of bench clearing touchdown celebrations and late timeouts created much anticipation for this rematch of SEC powers. UGA and UF squared off again in the Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party and UF came away the victors. Thankfully for UGA fans it was much closer than last year so they got to stick around for more than one half of football.

UF got on the board first in the 1st quarter when heisman hopeful Tim Tebow optioned right and pitched to Jeffrey Demps who scored from 1 yd out.

In the middle of the 2nd quarter after multiple exchanges of possession, the Gators struck again as Tebow carried it in from 8 yds out.

On UGA's ensuing possession, after being sacked on 1st and 2nd downs, QB J. Cox threw a pass intended for AJ Green that was intercepted and returned for a TD by M. Wright.

Late in the 2nd, UGA got on the board as QB J. Cox connected with AJ Green for a 51 yd TD.

Tebow and the Gators would respond before halftime as Tebow connected with WR D. Thompson in the back of the end zone from 16 yds out.

Late in the 4th, UGA QB J. Cox connected again with AJ Green for their final score of the day from 7 yds out.

Coach Sherm had this to say after the game: "It's amazing to come into a game like this and play like we did today. And having two safeties like M. Wright and Will Hill, the plays those two made today really sealed this win for us. Big game from J. Cunningham too. Great win, I love beating UGA! They really put some pressure on us in the 2nd quarter after they scored. Their defense buckled down and really started bringing some heat. Thankfully, we made some adjustments and Tebow was able to handle it."

Florida Keeps on Rolling

Tim Tebow and company kept the season rolling right along Saturday as they played host to visiting Vanderbilt. This game was a no contest as UF dominated right from the get go.

Led by Senior heisman candidate Tim Tebow, the gators offense was practically unstoppable. They rolled up a huge lead in the first half and put it on cruise for the remainder.

The big scare in the game was Sr MLB Brandon Spikes going down in the 3rd quarter with a strained hamstring. Luckily the initial reports were good and he was able to return to action later in the game.

The game gave witness to something Gator fans have been waiting for all season long. Standout TE Aaron Hernandez finally broke out with a monstorous game. The Vanderbilt secondary had no answer for him as they were out sized and out ran all over the field.

Florida Knocks Off the Visor
And in doing so clinched their spot in the SEC championship game in Atlanta, Georgia.

Florida came away victorious this weekend on their trip to Williams Brice Stadium. The Gators were behind after the 1st quarter and the game was 17-12 UF at halftime but UF erupted in the second half on their way to posting 52 points. The big turning point in the game came when SC running back Eric Baker went down in the third quarter.

Coach KSherm had this to say, "that kid was slippery quick today. He really hurt us in the first half. I don't think our defense was used to that type of speed and agility. I think we'll have to give C. Rainey and J. Demps a little more time on the scout team offense so our D is more prepared for that going forward."

UF Wins Battle for Sunshine State!!!
UF knocks off the visiting Seminoles this week in their annual rivalry game.

And so the rivalry begins. The Gators displayed tenacious defense in this game to determine who would keep their national championship dreams alive. From heart stopping strips to skull rattling hits to blanketed pass coverage, the Gators D lived up to their name today holding opposing FSU to 14 points and forcing 5 turnovers.

Tebow and the offense did their part in the first half to score after turnovers. Sr MLB Brandon Spikes made a great strip to stop a FSU drive deep into Gators territory. FS Major Wright laid the wood to a Seminole receiver on their next possession deep in Gators territory to force turnover #2. And Sophomore sensation Will Hill came up with a pick six to really put the heat on FSU and their Junior QB Christian Ponder.

In the second half the Gator offense didn't have to do much but rely on the superb play of their defense and manage the ball game avoiding any stupid mistakes.

"That was a great game our D played today. Will Hill made plays that really changed this game. He nearly took away half the field with numerous INTs and pass deflections. The D was stingy and got us the W today. FSU played well but there was just no doing today, our defense knew what was on the line and played like it." -Coach KSherm

After the game Coach LB Fitted "The Gators defense was unbelievable today. They didn't give us anything. Then to make it worse, our defense didn't even show up."

Players of the Game:
Game Ball T. Tebow 9/12 169 yds 2 TDs, 11 Car 37 yds TD

Gators Punch Their BCS Ticket!!!
In a great SEC championship win the Gators find revenge very sweet!

The Gators had a big chip on their shoulder heading into this one looking to return the favor for their sole `08 loss. And boy did they not disappoint.

On the opening drive Ole Miss came out looking to run the ball right down the Gators throat looking to take away the big speed advantage of Florida's defense. Ole Miss drove 60 yds before being stopped on 3rd down and kicker J. Shene put one through the uprights to make it 3-0.

The Gators answered with a long drive trying to take the lead and did on a 1 yd TD rush by HB J. Demps at the start of the 2nd quarter. The Gators struck again when on Ole Miss' ensuing possession, J. Snead was picked by FS Major Wright and then Tebow connected with Carl Moore for a 35 yd TD.

The rest of the game was a story of turnovers as UF's offense opened up an 11 point lead at halftime and scored on their first possession of the 2nd half to go up 18 and forcing Ole Miss to become one dimensional. This resulted in a few more INTs as J. Snead was forced to make throws he wouldn't have otherwise in an attempt to get back in the game. As a result, the Gators tallied 5 INTs in this one.

"This was a great one. Our guys played amazing today. Our goal all season was to get to Atlanta. We did that and we took care of business today. Now we'll go back and start getting ready for whoever the BCS formula puts in front of us." -Coach KSherm

Great Game xTin Cupx. Good luck in your bowl game and good luck on the recruiting trail. I know Bama will be gunning for you next year.

The good news from this game for Ole Miss and the rest of the SEC, that was Tebow's last SEC game. A collective sigh of relief from SEC coaches.

Gators Win!
It's official, a dynasty has been written as Gators win 3 National Championships in four years.

The Florida Gators are your 2009 BCS National Champions! They have accomplished what they set out to do this year by being the first Florida Gators football team to go undefeated.

The BCS game was a tough battle. All season, everyone said it would be impossible to stop the Coach Urban Meyer's spread and shred offense. However, the Va Tech Hokies have never backed down from a challenge.

Va Tech came out running a new 4-2-6 defense in the championship game, something the Gators hadn't been faced with all year.

"The defense really caused some problems for us. We found success in some matchups by they were able to diminish our speed advantage somewhat by putting that package on the field. Thankfully we were able to make enough plays to win this one." -O.C. KSherm

However, as we all know, offense wins games, defense wins championships!

The Gators got on top after Va Tech's first possession was a 3 and out and Tebow hooked up with Carl Moore for a 26 yd TD.

Va Tech would answer back with a 70 yd drive capped off by a Tyrod Taylor TD pass to J. Boykins from 7 yds out.

On the ensuing Gator possession, Va Tech came up with a big 3 and out forcing the Gators to punt. Thanks to Urban Meyer's large emphasis on special teams play, this play may have won the Gators the championship. C. Henry skied his punt looking to pin Va Tech deep inside their own territory however, Va Tech's return man failed to call fair catch and when he caught the ball he was delivered a bone rattling hit by Sophomore CB Janoris Jenkins. Wondy Pierre Louis was there for the scoop and score to put the gators up 14-7.

Va Tech responded again with a long time consuming drive trying to keep the potent Gators offense off the field. They capped the drive with another TD knotting the game at 14. The gators got the ball back with 20 seconds left and drove into FG range to go up 17 - 14 at half.

The second half was another tight battle and the game was finally capped off when Va Tech was down 10 with minutes left in the game. Tyrod Taylor dropped back to pass and threw to what he thought was a wide open WR only to have Major Wright make a big INT. This allowed the Gators to eat the clock and put the nail in the coffin.

"That was a great game and a great opponent we played against today. Great game Hokie! That's going to be a tough program to contend with for years to come."

Gators Escape Scare in Death Valley

The Gators had a mighty task in front of them traveling into Death Valley, one of the toughest venues to play in college football, especially at night. The Tigers looked to throw a curveball at the Gators when they came out wearing their purple jersey's instead of the usual home whites.

For the second game in a row, the opposing defense teed off on the UF running game doing everything in their power to render it useless. UF turned to Brantley to get the offense moving and he did. Connecting with his WRs just enough to capture a 7 point lead at the half, 10-3. LSU's stud QB Russell Shephard was dangerous but thanks to a bend but don't break defense the Gators were able to hold LSU to just a FG in the first half.

The second half was much more entertaining than the first as both teams tried to throw haymakers at each other. UF kicked off to LSU to start the second half and their defense answered the challenge by forcing LSU to a 3 and out. UF then drove the length of the field for a TD capped off by the 28 yard TD reception by Deonte Thompson in the highlights below.

On LSU's ensuing possession, Russell Shephard called an option but after attempting an ill advised pitch, UF SS Dee Finley snagged it in mid air and housed it from 40 yards out.

LSU would answer back when Shephard connected with Rueben Randle for a 21 yard TD.

In the 4th quarter, UF was up 24 - 10 and wanted to sustain a drive but LSU had other thoughts stopping Demps in the backfield numerous times. Thankfully UF got away with a FG which would prove to be huge.

LSU would go on to score on another Shephard pass. This time he found M. Joseph his big TE on a 46 yd bomb after he got behind the coverage. With only a 10 point lead, UF needed to move the chains to ice the game. However was unable to do it with the running game. Then, on a 3rd down later in the 4th, disaster struck as John Brantley was picked off by LSU's #2 CB who jumped a route and made a great INT and took it back for 6.

UF was only up 3 with 2 minutes to play and LSU was able to stop them again on downs. LSU drove the length of the field and reached field goal range with time remaining for a couple shots at the end zone and the win. LSU opted to go for the win instead of playing for overtime and this proved costly as Russell Shephard paniced when confronted with pressure and threw up a prayer only to have UF SS Dee Finley pick it off. Game over!

For the first time this season, UF lost the turnover margin. Thankfully though the D was able to stand strong and hold on to the win.

Great game from LSU. Russell Shephard is only a sophomore. That kid is going to be a pain in the arse for the rest of the SEC the next couple years.

Revenge!!!

The Gators finally got the revenge they've been waiting a whole year for. Their sole loss last season, in overtime, that sent them to the Sugar Bowl instead of the National Championship has been avenged.

New Georgia Coach DHarvey, inherited a very talented program, but he also inherited a bitter rivalry that the Gators were extremely motivated for.

The Gators D was lights out in this one. They caused numerous turnovers and left the Georgia offense stifled. Standout Freshamn QB W. Robinson was left shellshocked after tossing 4 INTs and a fumble that resulted in a scoop and score for the Gators. (check big man DT Jaye Howard rumbling for the TD in the highlight below) Coming into this one UF knew they had to contain UGA's talented offense in order to attack the soft spot of this team, it's defensive front 7.

The Gators D did it's part leaving UGA confused and frustrated. Then, the UF offense attacked. UF held UGA to 7 first downs and 185 total yards while racking up 18 first downs and dominating time of possession.

It was a great game and a great outting for the Gators. UGA has a solid team and they will definitely be tough in the future as their star backfield matures.

Great game Harvey! Good luck the rest of the way.

In a side note: UGA's corners were up to the challenge of UF's talented WR corp just like Harvey said they would be. The coverage was so good that it allowed UGA to attack John Brantley and they were able to rack up a half dozen sacks.

Georgia's MVP contender Marlon Brown scored the sole Georgia TD after devouring his man in one on one coverage. "We had a blown play call on that play. We didn't want to leave our #2 CB on an island with Marlon all week, but we did on that play and boy did he make us pay!" -Coach KSherm

UGA M. Dowtin 12 Tkls, 3 TFL, Sack,

Here's some highlights: (The John Brantley INT, then TD saving tackle may have been the play of the game for UF. If UGA scores on that play it would have been a completely different ball game. Instead on the ensuing possession, UGA fumbles and the big man rumbles to the house and does the gator chomp!)

Ya the 2 turnovers killed me early in the game I think I ended up with a few more but they were when I was down 20 points in 4th throwing bombs that. The INT to Beal and fumble recovery by Howard turned into 14 points for you and was the difference from a 7 points defecit to 20+ point deficit.

next year when its a home game and QB a year older and your 2 99 speed RB both graduating along with Brantley and well pretty much the entire offense it should hopefully be a closer game.
