Georgia had some high expectations heading into the 2008 campaign, but they fell well short of those lofty goals. However, it was not the fault of quarterback Matthew Stafford or running back Knowshon Moreno. The offensive line was decimated by injuries and the team was never able to garner much consistency. The line hopes to stay healthy this time around, but now Stafford and Moreno are off in the NFL and the high expectations left with them.
#13 Georgia (1-0) vs #9 Oklahoma State (0-1)
Nail Biter! - Georgia narrowly defeats OSU 38-34
Georgia had a slight lead going into the 4th quarter when the Cowboys got their flow back and scored twice to go ahead by 3 with 2:45 to go. Georgia quarterback Brian Cox threw a beautiful 32 yard pass to TE Durham to go up by 4 with 53 seconds left. The cowboys started their drive and Georgia LB Dent recovered with 42 sec left.
This was ESPN instant classic game #1 all time
After a tough loss to Tennessee Georgia Bulldogs head coach resigned sighting personal reasons and coach Mark Richt returned to man the Dawgs.
His first game was againts Kentucky where it was a great game right down to the wire. Kentucky started by getting the ball and right away got there passing game going dispite the rainy conditions. They put up 2 straight scores and a FG with dominate OL blocking and one play I think 9 of 11 defensive players were pancaked! (run blocking sliders tough aha)
Despite being down 17-0 Georgia was moving the ball decently and if not for a bad decision which resulted in a INT in the endzone they would of scored so they decided not to let down with just over a minute down in the first half and they threw a bomb that star Junior WR Marlon Brown came down with and took it in for the big major. With a tonne of momentum Georgia stopped Kentucky with 2 incompletions in a row so they called a timeout after a 3rd down run to get the ball back again and after a few nice throws to H-back Orson Charles and a nice option for 20 yards they had 8 seconds left and used there last timeout on the 12 yard line. So Richt decided to take one last shot in the endzone before attemption the endzone but that turned out to be a bad move when Marlon Brown was brought down inches before the first down on the 2 yard line because of a slant pattern so they couldnt stop the clock and went into halftime down 17-7.
They came out and with momentum and ran down Kentucky's throat and scored on the first drive but when Kentucky got the ball back they anwsered quicky with 2 huges passes in a row the 2nd resulting in a 25 yard touchdown to Randall Cobb who burned the corner at the line playing press for a nice fade TD. Georgia and Kentucky against traded touchdowns with neither defense being able to defend Kentucky QB Morgan Newton had an incredible day with 300+ yards and no INT no matter what Georgia did on defense he seemed to pick them apart.
than in the 4th quarter Georgia zoomed down the field with there running attack but a huge sack that lost Georgia 6 yards on 3rd down by Kentucky on the 30 yard line put them out of field goal range so Georgia decided to punt and trust there defense.
Georgia defense indeed came up big so they got the ball back with 3:50 at there own 10 yard line. Georgia didn't pannic and stuck to what was working which was freshman QB Robinson and senior tailback Carlton Thomas and slowly moved the chains and converted a nice 4th down on 4th and inches. With everyone in the stadium getting nervous they had a 3rd and goal at the 2 yard line and pounded the ball in to take the lead 31-30. Kentucky got the ball back with just under 30 seconds and got a couple deep passes batted down to end the game and preserve the big comeback for Georgia.
Georgia - 31
Kentucky - 30
It seems like missed PATs always come back to bite teams and lost Kentucky the game.
Georgia - 41
Mississippi St - 12
In what was a pretty easy victory for the Dawgs they rolled over Miss St, they came out swinging pounding it up the middle all drive and than tossed a nice one to start the scoring to JR WR Marlon Brown who is shredding up SEC defenses so far this season. Than on Miss St next possession they ot 2 straight sacks by RS JR DE Abry Jones who had his breakout performance of the year. He abused the RT all game for a career game and got tonnes of pressures. 2 of his sacks came on corner blitzes where the corner got there and couldnt bring the QB down and he finished it off wich some punishing blows.
The 2nd drive was move of the same with the young freshman QB breaking out a big run to get near the redzone and the Dawgs ended up connecting with Marlon Brown on a nice slant pattern for his 2nd TD of the game.
Than the next 2 drives were ugly for the defense of Georgia where State running back Robert dewee Elliot broke off consecutive runs of 78 and 48 yards which was heartbreaking for the defense and got on defensive co-ordinator Willy Martinez nerves so he light into the defense and they listened and didn't let up any more points all game.
Georgia played some smart football and seemed to have all the momentum for there on in with the freshman connecting to the freshman WR Cox which should be a very nice tandem for some time for another TD and than Marlon Brown for his 3rd TD of the game a new career high. The rest of the game Georgia ran the ball and kept moving the chains keeping the ball out of States hands and shut down Miss St. the last 3 quarters with some beautiful INT one of which was returned for TD by JR Cummings who is starting to get some NFL people talking with his 6'2 200 frame and 4.4 speed.
Georgia undersized LB continues to be an issue and something they will address this offseason at the very latest because they can't continue to miss tackels like they have been.
The Good - freshman QB sensation Willy Robinson played mistake free football and Marlon Brown continues to rise up draft boards as the 21 year old Junior puts up another big game and is averaging a whopping 100+ yards a game this year.
The Average - Georgia defense made some nice plays but continues to whiff on way too many tackels
The Bad - Mississippi St play calling was horrible and were not leaving anyone into block all game which resulted in letting up 5 sacks
Georgia - 35
Vandy - 13
What a solid game by Georgia defense as they came up clutch all game, The game started by Vandy driving down the field and Junior Nickelback Braden Smith had a nice INT on an underthrown out route and balled back 70 yards for the score. Vandy didn't learn from there mistake as they went back to Smiths man on a drag route accross the middle that the ultra quick Smith jumped again for the INT.
Georgia couldnt take advantage to go up 14-0 early though as a fumble by there junior Carlton Thomas ended that drive and Vandy got points off the turnover as Wayne Norman drove Vandy down the field with his stylish runs and punched it in breaking a bunch of tackels for the major to even it up at 7's.
Georgia than drove down the field with some nice runs and after a big shot to there freshman QB they brought in backup Zack Mettenberger who on the first throw threw a bomb to Ismael Troupe for the score to take a 21-7 lead.
Georgia defense again came up with an INT as it was Braden Smith 3rd of the game on a tipped ball from the line of scrimmage where Smith was in the right place at the right time as goes the saying "sometimes its better to be lucky than good"
Georgia than drove down the field again on some nice runs highlited by freshman QB Willy Robinsons run on 3rd and long to move the chains on a great option keeper. They finished off with the freshman duo hooking up for the major Robinson to D.J. Cox. SEC defenses will get used to hearing that combination over the next few years as the duo of talented freshman are sure to light up the score board with their electrifying skills. alot of people have already started the comparisons between A.J. Green and Cox.
Georgia INT storm didn't stop there as they picked off Vandy QB's 2 more times in the 2nd half one a nice deep throw leading tackler and star Junior FS Rambo ran under and the other another tip at the line where former 5 star DeAngelo Tyson came down with the ball.
Georgia put the dagger in Vandy capatilizing on the 5th turnover and INT of the game by the commodores by punching the ball in from a few inches out on 3rd down by Junior RB Carlton Thomas who had a so-so day with a few nice runs but contained by Vandy for the most part.
The Good - Braden Smith had a career day picking off 3 passes in the first half and the rest of Georgia DB also played great making plays on the ball all game
The Aveage - Georgia freshman QB Willy Robinson played a average game by his standards with some nice accurate throws and some great runs but also had 2 bad reads where he threw the ball to the flats to his TE not realizing the corner didn't bail out and was in cover 2 and another dumb throw into double coverage in the Vandy redzone
The Bad - severly undersized and weak Georgia linebackers continue to miss countless tackels and its looking like there in for a big shuffle in the offseason to get some much needed size and tackeling ability on the field next year
Marlon Brown had a bit of a down day stat wise but had some nice plays during the game with a nice long catch on a beatiful pass by the freshman down the right sideline and had a great run on a WR reverse on 3rd and 9 to keep a scoring drive alive
Final stats - 3 catches 40 yards - 1 run 9 yards 0 - TD
tough day for Georgia against Auburn in a big time rivalry game
Georgia started off the game bad and bad went to worse as the game went on. The very first drive they threw a ball which looked to be a 25 yard gain before star Senior corner Nekito Thorpe jumped out of no where to make a stunning one handed grab and grab momentum for Auburn. On the ensuing drive Auburn RB had some nice patient runs behind the pulling OL on sweeps and tosses and on a 23 yard scamper Mcalleb went untouched for the TD.
Georgia undersized Linebackers continue to be a huge issue as they cannot seem to get off blocks and first guy isnt bringing down the ball carrier enough. The frotn 4 and back 4 is the only thing keeping this defense from getting torched a the DL provided nice pressure resulting in a couple sacks and alot more pressures but Auburns freshman QB seemed to just be able to get the ball off a few times and getting completions to his amazing set of WRs which includes Harry Adams who leads the nation in recieving.
Auburn continued to play sound and not make mistakes and with a big lead Georgia was forced to throw most of the last 3 quarters and that equals disastor when you have a freshman QB whose known for his legs not his arm. he went on to throw 3 more INT to Thorpe in what was the game of his life as he seemed to be untouchable on the outside but unavoidable being down by 2 scores.
Georgia actually played alright and if wasnt for 4 turnovers in Auburn territory they could of put up a lot more points. Auburns QB battle will be very interesting for next year when Tyrik 9 Heisman Rollison comes back from his injury these two underclassman will be duking it out for the position.
The Final score was 31-10 Auburn
Georgia bent over and gave Fresno St and banged them from the kitchen to the back porch.
They started off the game with an INT on the 2 yard line and got tackeled in the endzone giving me the safety which was kinda gay but for all the bad luck i've had this year shit happens I guess.
Georgia who turned to Zach Metteberger to lead the offense after the freshman Willie Robinson continued to make horrible throws and could not limit his turnovers since SEC play started. Zach made some beautiful throws in the first quarter which was dominated by athletic specimen TE Orson Charles who is really starting to come into his own with a career day catching the fooozball.
After slowing down the last 3 or 4 games Carlton Thomas had a big day running the ball and had multiple beautiful punt returns and I don't think he was ever tackeled by the first defender once all game. (started using the analog stick more instead of spin and what not and with his 95+ acc and agi makes him very fun to juke with)
Defensively Georgia dominated Fresno St up front stopping them on multiple 3rd and short situations. Georgia defense played as good as its played all year as a team with all the levels of the defense playing well especially the defensive line with the two DT combining for 3 sacks which up until today had only 1 sack between the two of them all year!
CB Cummings continues to impress NFL scouts with his 6'2 200 frame and 4.4 speed and helped his cause with a big time INT for TD and NFL draft analysts continue to shoot him up their boards.
WLB Marcus Dowtin delivered some of the hardest hits today Georgia has layed all year and leaves Georgia's coaching staff scrating their heads on where to line him up next year with a possible move to safety because of his undersized frame at just over 200 pounds and want to help him out for the NFL where he doesnt have the body to play LB in the league.
Georgia ended up putting up 40+ points in the first half and just cruised the second half letting up a late TD against the backups to win the game 57-10 in what was a very impressive victory and probably the most balanced of any this year with all 3 units offense defense and ST playing great games and not a lot to critisize other than a few INT but 2 were just unbelievable plays by the defense and the 3rd being pretty much a punt throwing a bomb on 3rd and 15.
Game MVP - offense TE Orson Charles
defense DT DeAngelo Tyson
Another nice Win for the Georgia Bulldogs to cap off a regular season which had a lot of ups and downs. Georgia was happy to finish on high note but that didn't come without pressure and stress. They went against ACC foe VaTech for the pride of the confrence and handled them in a close one.
UGA drove down the first drive of the game for the quick score and than VaTech had a big kickoff return and short drive that led to a score for them tying up the game at 7-7. The two teams again traded scores for a 14-10 UGA lead than on the ensuing kickoff from the tech FG UGA breakout star of the season Braden Smith returned it 100 yards for the score up the left sideline in what was a huge momentum booster.
UGA didn't want to make a stupid mistake but after they got the ball back but they did just that with a fumble off a 10 yard catch and run by early season Heisman candidate Marlon Brown who has really tailed off the last few games. Tech big time NFL prospect Jarred Boykin made them pay striking for the score to closent he game up but right before the end of the half UGA big time TE Orson Charles hauled in a 38 yard grab for the score on an athletic play which is sure to get the NFL attention as he is only a sophmore.
the seconf half was more of the same pass fest as neither team had much luck running the ball other than a few nice scampers by Ryan Williams. the big kick in the nuts was a 68 yard catch by the big time freshman WR Derrick Cox who is 6'5 and showed up his big play potential taking a corner route and beaking a tackel and showing off his wheels for the big TD.
VaTech kept hanging in the game with multiple 3rd and 10+ conversions and seemed to stay around that 10 point defecite before grabbing the lead late in the game off a drive highlighted by a huge catch by Ryan Williams on a screen pass. UGA pushed a FG in with just a few minutes left to make UGA lead 6 but VA tech drove down the field and scoring to take the 39 38 lead which put pressure on UGA and their SO QB to produce in the wee minutes of the game which they did when the freshman WR Cox came up big again after a big time sack to put UGA in 2nd and 18 he came up with a big catch and a few plays later they were in the endzone.
VaTech used all their time outs trying to stop UGA so they only had time for a few hail mary's which they were sacked on ending a very intense game which Georgia squeeked out 44-39
The Good - Georgia young talent at WR and TE stepped up huge with the two freshman WR combining for 200 yards and the SO TE Orson Charles having a career game for the second week in a row hauling in over 100 yards
The Average - VaTech Ryan Williams had some nice runs and catches but Georgia defense did a good job on him for the most part. Call it a draw
The Bad - UGA Marlon Brown disappeared in a game where the Boykin vs Brown matchup was getting hyped up and he didn't live up to the hype like Boykin did
