Under new management the Phillies went 8-2 in GM Boros' first sim including a sweep of divisional rival Washington in what was a must win for the Nationals (who now sit at third in the division and 9 1/2 games back).

Heading into September, the Phillies look to secure their spot in the playoffs but this coming sim they do battle with the Nationals once again. Our Magic Number sits at 21 so we are far from clinching the division.

The Phillies had a great series vs the Diamondbacks but unfortunately they could not follow through in a do-or-die Game 5 as Arizona beat them 8-5.

Some recent Player Transactions involving Philly:

First Baseman K.C. Hobson signed a 2 year extension worth $10,900,000
Second Baseman Sean Rodriguez refused our offer and will enter Free Agency
Shortstop Donald Walker accepted a 5 year extension worth $82,500,000. It took a little bit of haggling but he eventually dropped his initial asking price by about $40 million overall (yea he wanted over $120 million)

The Good Phight highlights a pitcher that has started this season hot.

    Michael Wacha, #40, Rating: :4stars:

Wacha has had a pretty good start to the season, compiling a 4-1 record and a 2.21 ERA. Wacha has pitched 36.2 innings over the 5 games he has started, meaning he has averaged 7.2 innings pitched per game. He has powered through each of his games only allowing 9 runs total and a single home run. GM Boros was pleased with his strikeout numbers with 35 (7 averaged per game). Wacha was brought to the Good Phights' attention after last weeks shutout victory over the San Francisco Giants. The article read:

"The Giants can take comfort in knowing that they will not have to face Michael Wacha for a while. The 28-year-old hurler pitched a 2-hit shutout to help the Phillies beat the Giants 5-0. In the process, Wacha struck out 7 and walked 1. So far Wacha has limited his opponents to a .201 batting average."

Good new for the Phillies as SP Roberto "Liberty" Perez comes off the DL.

Great.. just what you need after that 16-0 beat down you put on me. Must have been revenge for sweeping you earlier this season.

A lot of changes have been made in Philly this off-season.

Two of the Starting Rotation have been moved including Roberto "Liberty" Perez and Pedro "Joe-Ma" Mendoza.

The move of Perez was highly criticized but GM Boros felt that the addition of C Patrick Tolentino will immediately boost the lineup and provide something on defense they didn't have least season.

While the ink on the trade with Mendoza is still drying, the additions of a very solid MR in Dayton, something desperately needed in the organization. The deal also brought a young OF in Jorge Hernandez, the kid is young and has a long way to go but the potential is there and he will make a great utility player. Hopefully he and Silva can work together and become the great utility the Phillies need.

And finally some great (at least to me) Free Agents were picked up. The Phillies added CF Terrance Gore, 2B Heath Fletcher, MR Sergio Romo, and MR Dellin Betances. The versatility of Gore in the OF and Fletcher in the IF caught the eye of the GM right away as he continued to look to bolster something of a defense. Romo is a good addition to the BP and with a couple SP being moved, Betances is going to get a shot at the Starting role, we will risk the 45 rated Control for now and if that nips us, we do have a backup plan.

We wanted to Win Now and that may now be a possibility with a strengthened bullpen and defense. Hopefully the bats give the SP the run support we lacked last season and the relievers can answer the call.

As an attempt to revive this I'll start recapping my Sims and highlighting some things starting with the most recent sim.

    Sim: July 21st, 2024 thru July 31st, 2024

    Phillies Record: 5-6 (39-67, .368, 18.5 GB, 29th/30)

It is sad to say this is the best Sim the Phillies have seen all of July, heck maybe even all of the 2024 Season. Hopefully things are turning around after the All-Star Break but it's a long shot that we contend for anything. SP Mark Appel continues to struggle after the Phillies gave up good prospects for him, he lost all three of his starts this sim to drop his record to an awful 2-12. But on the good side of things, Curt Wilson is doing well after being moved into the Rotation, earning his 2nd win as a SP.

    Injury News

MR Willy Paredes is going to miss 4 months and the rest of this season with shoulder inflammation.

LF Jorge Hernandez came off of rehab and will split time at CF with Ricardo Silva and will play backup to Cade Patton. Jorge lit up AAA while he was down there, batting an average of .319 and earning an OBP of .347. Good to have him back.

    Contract News

Former SP now MR Dennis Neuman has continually demanded that he return to the starting rotation and GM Boros has continuously told the guy he is fine where he is at. This most recent sim, Dennis demanded that he be traded, something the organization may entertain. He is an unhappy player in an unhappy place and quite frankly we are tired of listening to him complain. His control, stamina and velocity have slowly been on the decline as well.

    Development Update

    develop1.PNG

    Minor League News

I'll end this segment on a good note with 1B Felix Chapa of the Reading Phillies (AA) earning himself EL Best Hitter Award. He had a great July with 37 Hits, 12 Home runs, 26 RBI and scored 23 runs while riding on a .327 AVG and .411 OBP. His yearly stats are 131 hits, 26 HR, 69 RBI, .333 AVG and a .432 OBP. The front office is suggesting we give him a chance in the AAA spot but his current attitude is Great and we'll more than likely leave him where he is for the time being if he's have a great season.

    Sim: August 1st, 2024 thru August 10th, 2024

    Phillies Record: 3-6 (42-73, .365, 19.5 GB, 27th/30)

Another poor Sim for the Phillies but on the up side we are no longer last in the division and have moved up two spots in the Power Rankings from 29th to 27th. August and September need to be REALLY good for us but that's wishful thinking. SP Curt Wilson was handed two losses while Joe Ross improves to 11-6 and continues to be the best starter in our rotation this season.

    Injury News

1B Gregorio Castro went down this Sim for 4 weeks with an intercostal strain.

MR/Emergency SP Marcus Castillo comes off of rehab in AAA and looks to make an immediate impact. He might find himself in the starting rotation but it's unclear what Manager Boros will do. He had 2-3 Record down in AAA with a 3.68 ERA.

    Rumors Fly

2B Delino "Sat in the tanning booth too long" DeShields Jr. was told he would be splitting time with Heath Fletcher in an attempt to improve the teams chances of winning. Upon this DeShields Jr threw quite the impressive, yet juvenile fit. While an impressive player, Fletcher has some areas that DeShields just cannot match. Rumors are flying around the ML that DeShields has been placed on the Trade Block, well they are quite untrue as we will hold onto this little Oompa Loompa for just a while more.

    Minor League News

CF Dan Rogers earned himself NYP Player of the Week honors after delivering 9 hits, 2 HR, 12 RBIs, 5 runs and a .375 AVG over 6 games. This performance most certainly kept the Crosscutters in 2nd place for the Pinckney Division, just 4 games back. Well done sir.

    Phillies Record: 6-4 (47-77, .379, 21 GB, 25th/30)

Pretty quality sim compared to the rest of this season. A series win against Manager Colemanchu and his Diamondbacks. Also, I believe our first sweep on the road vs the Rockies and Manager HAL9100. Appel finally got a win this time around but also another loss. SP Biddle was put back into the rotation and picked himself up a win. SP Michael Wacha continues to struggle which is too bad as Manager Boros likes the kid and wants him to start pitching like he means it. And lastly we moved up two more spots in the Power Rankings but are still a cellar dweller this season.

    Injury News

    None

    Minor League News

SP Andy Heddon has had a great season despite the Blue Claws doing horrible in the A Northern Division. He has 14 wins and an ERA of 4.07. Attention was brought to him as he shutout his opponent the other night, allowing 6 hits, no runs and striking out 10.

2B Eddie Mitchell was suspended for five games for arguing a strike with the umpire. Mitchell was overly aggressive and displayed very inappropriate behavior. He served his suspension during the Sim and it now back into the lineup. Let's hope he learned to just take the call and move on.

    Phillies Record: 7-3 (54-80, .403, 17.5 GB, 26th/30)

An even better than the last sim as the Phillies gain a little bit of momentum heading in September. It's clear we aren't a playoff contender but ending this dismal season on a high note would be great. This sim included a 2 game sweep of the Nationals (KnightNoles ) and a 4 game sweep of the Braves (Timpegoose ). While it won't help us win the division, it's still nice to sweep two divisional opponents in one Sim. SP Jesse Biddle picked up more wins, as did SP Mark Appel but SP Joe Ross continued to be our hot pitcher as his record is now 12-8.

    Entering September

As always, the roster expands to 40 men at the beginning of September and the Phillies have decided to bring on the following:

    2B Jose Chavez
    3B Allen Hayes
    RF Kade Overby
    MR Paul Carson
    RF Mike Thompson

While not a full 40 men, these guys are some of the best we have in the Minors and deserve a chance to show what they have. Hopefully they can help us at least finish this season at .500 ball.

    Minor League News

CF Domingo Castros (AAA) career is over after suffering a torn labrum. Reports are that he was taken off the diamond on a stretcher and escorted to the hospital via ambulance. Castro was never much of a hitter but had posted solid numbers in the 2024 season. He was primarily a defensive guy with excellent ratings across the board and had some great speed. This is a big blow to our Minor League system.

1B Felix Chapa (AA) hits the headlines against as he wins his second straight EL Batter of the Month Award. Manager Boros was pleased to hear this and was even more pleased to hear had earned himself a spot on the 2024 EL All-Star Game. During August, Chapa hit 34/93, .366 AVG, 9 HR, 17 RBI, and 26 R. This brings his total up to 165/486, .340 AVG, .451, 35 HR, 86 RBI, and 99 R. Chapa has continued to prove himself on the field and could see AAA next season, Manager Boros states that with such little time left in the season, there is no point to spoil the season he has already had.

More injury news in the Minors as SP Feny Arias (AAA) suffers a torn ligament in his elbow resulting in him being out the remainder of this season and likely the next 7-8 months. He was one of our better AAA pitchers with a 9-3 record and 3.98 ERA. Another nasty blow to our AAA team.

    Phillies Record: 5-9 (59-89, .399, 25 GB, 27th/30)

Well, a couple of quality sims but an awful first half of September leaves us anxious to leave this season behind and start turning things around in Philly. For a moment there I thought we had a shot at finishing at .500 but that is impossible at this stage. The only thing that we can hope for is one more quality sim. At least we swept KnightNoles again, that's always a good consolation prize.

    Clubhouse Tension

3B Neil Kelley has had a good season but, statistically, it has been one of the worse he's had all around. His AVG and OBP are lower than they have ever been and he committed a career high 11 Errors at 3B in 2024. For September Manager Boros thought they would sit him a little more and work out some younger talent. This didn't go over well for the 29 year old but at this point there are only two weeks left and it really doesn't matter what we do to our lineups or depth chart.

    More Clubhouse Tension

SP Antonio Cruz started talking about a possible trade this past sim as he continued to grow frustrated with his transfer to the Bullpen earlier this season. There was good reason for this as we were attempting to salvage our season but no one really stepped up in his absence. Look for him to fight for a spot in the rotation next season. Cruz was used primarily in Middle Relief and as an Emergency SP in the Bullpen.

Well the last sim of the season was at .500 ball, could have been worse honestly. The scary part is the higher ups are really putting the Phillies in the hot seat as they 1) Had a record under .500 and 2) Seem to be headed for their first season in the red financially. This pretty much gives us one year to turn things around before potential or certain demotion. As for this most recent sim, I'll take a series win over the Brewers and a split with the Pirates as a good sign. We started gathering some momentum for a while and can only hope it carries over.

    Minor League News

Yep, 1B Felix Chapa is again spotlighted. He has won the EL Top Hitter of the Year Award. He had a great year despite his team not doing so well. His final stat line is as follows: 170/520, .327 AVG, .443 OBP, 36 HR, 89 RBI, 101 R, 7.1 WAR. These stats are all career highs for a full season (he did have some higher numbers in Rookie ball but he also only had 20 AB). There is serious talk of a promotion of some sort, more will come in the future.

    Between the Seasons
Couple of big trades in the Phillies organization as they went in with a mindset to free up salary and bring in some young potential talent. While the fans weren't exactly thrilled with these decisions, they seem to understand it was necessary, though maybe not for the immediate future.

Phillies Trade Appel to the Yankees

SP Mark Appel was dealt to New York after coming to Philly in early June but did not live up to any expectations. In fact he had probably the worst season in his career. Though he is rated at four and a half stars and has ratings through the roof, he could not pick up the wins. In return the Yankees sent the following:

SP Wilson 'Steady Pete' Ford (PTBNL) - 0.5/4.5 Stars - Age: 22

A lot of potential in this kid with High Work Ethic and Very High leadership ability. Good stamina (8), velocity and groundball percentage (60%) as well. Going to probably take a season or two for him to really start getting noticed but I bet he'll shine in our starting rotation someday.

    SP Mike Ward - 0.5/2.0 Star - Age: 23

Not much to look at star wise but who really goes off of those? The immediate draw to this guy was his potential for his Control to be at 75, with it already being at 65. As a ML he isn't really rotation material but that Control could come in handy as a MR and he might even earn an Emergency SP secondary role. The main concern with this guy is that his pitches are rated very high but he does have some good personality ratings, most impressively a Very High work ethic, meaning I hope he reaches that control quickly. Going to invite him to camp for ST to see how he does.

    1B Bryan Grant - 1.0/4.5 Stars - Age: 26

Potential for 80 HR Power, that's about as good as it gets. His eye could use some improving as it currently sits at 40, if it reaches potential of 60 along with the Power, this kid will crush them out of Liberty Bank some day, short porch and all. Currently sitting in AA and there are no plans to move him from there.

    Ed 'Enigma' Anderson - 1.0/3.5 Stars - Age: 23

A decent bat but this guy is going to be a great base stealer and outfielder. His defensive ratings are great and he will definitely be one, if not THE, go to guy should anyone need to be called up to help fill in for injury or poor performance. A sure pinch runner as well. Not very good with work ethic but he is rated Very High for Leadership and Desire to win, which at this point we could use.

    Michael Wacha now a Twin

Another guy that always did well for us but also was eating up a good chunk of our expenses. GM Boros personally liked this guy due to his consistency but it was meant to be if he wanted to remain GM of this club. He went to the Twins in return for:

    No Image Found

    SP Cesar Trevino - 0.5/3 Stars - Age: 17

Quite a bit of potential in this kid and PLENTY of time to develop it. Could end up being a fairly good MR in our system unless his stamina (3) begins to improve. He is currently going to start for the Rookie League in hopes of improving his stamina and velocity a bit.

    2B Jose Costello - 1.0/1.0 Stars - Age: 22

He's reached his potential and immediately earned a slot on our AAA team. 60 Contact and 80 Gap Power is an excellent bat and he has decent Eye (45) and K Avoidance (50). Pretty speedy around the bases and will play a good deal in AAA and may be called up if necessary but it's unlikely with the 2B already in Spring Training.

    LF Lorenzo Tavares - 1.0/1.0 Stars - Age: 24

Decent contact and K Avoidance. Not really a standout guy but he had a good 2024 season. Probably going to see him in AA or A.

    3B Alejandro Morales - 3.0/3.0 Stars - Age: 32

All through his career he has had a good OBP, which I like. Also has a fairly good bat with stellar defensive ratings at 3B. Good to have a guy to use in the Infield at 3B as we were majorly lacking depth at that spot.

    Player Development

    Develop.PNG

Good improvements on both players. NeuroticTruth ty5oke I could not set my Development Budget due to being in the negative. Now that I am in the + could one of you set it to 8M? Thanks.

    Spring Training
Several minor leaguers got the invite only a small amount stayed on the ML team. The Phillies went 8-14 in the Spring Training sim but that has never really reflected how we perform unless you want to count last season. The Owner also told us to just go out there and play at or above .500 ball and he'll be happy at the end of the season. Takes a TON of pressure off of our guys as he thought we could win it all last season.

    Opening Day Roster

The following players made the cut to start the season.

    Pitchers

    SP Joe Ross
    SP Jesse Biddle
    SP Marcos Castillo

    SS Delino DeShields Jr.

    Sim: April 1st through April 11th, 2025

    Phillies Record: 4-4 (4-4, .500, 1 GB, 12/30)

Not a bad sim for the Phillies to kick off the season. Opening day say us beat up the Mets but they would take the next two and win the first series of the season between the two teams. Philly would bounce back and take a series from the Pirates and are currently sitting at 1-1 in the first series with the Braves. RF Romain Vignal was the hot batter of the sim hitting 9/27, .333 AVG, .357 OBP, 2 HR, 5 RBI, and scored 6 runs. Vignal hit both homers in the win over Atlanta. The next sim will featuring finishing up the series with Atlanta, a sweep of the Nationals (KnightNoles) , a short two game series with Minnesota and the start of a four game set with the Reds (Hova).

    Sim: April 11th through April 21st, 2025

    Phillies Record: 4-4 (8-8, .500, 1.5 GB, 15th/30)

Philly would finish off the series with Atlanta with a win and would then head off to take 2 out of 3 from Washington, unable to deliver the sweep as they got stomped 9-3 in the second game. The game with the Twins was split 1-1 and the beginning of the Reds series was lost 2-5. SP Antonio Cruz continues to have a hot start to the sim as he picked up two more wins and has a nice 2.61 ERA. SP Joe Ross and Marcos Castillo are on the hit list this week though as neither of them have a combined record of 1-6 and an ERA of over 4.

    In the News

SP Jesse Biddle isn't really what he used to be but in his start @ Washington he was able to keep them off the board, walk no one and strike out four. He is currently 1-1 on the season with a 2.35 ERA.

    In the Minors

Rookie 1B Darren Sherman won EL's Top Player last week as he went for 15/30, .500, 2 HR , 6 RBI and 4 Runs. Sherman has spent the last few years floating around A and SA before finally being called up to AA and it looks like it was the right call. He currently has the seasons stats of: 23/48, .479 AVG, .526 OBP, 3 HR, 10 RBI and 5 Runs.

    Sim: Aprils 21st through May 1st, 2025

    Phillies Record: 5-4 (13-12, 0.5 GB, 11th/30)

This sim start off with the Reds taking a 0-2 advantage in the four game series but the Phillies would take the next two to split it at two apiece. The following series with San Francisco wouldn't go so well as Philly dropped the first two but did manage to steal one away from the Giants to avoid the sweep. The long 10 game road trip concluded with a trip to Cleveland where Philly came away with 2 of the 3 and would finish the sim with a loss to Washington. SP Joe Ross picked up another L while Castillo was able to pick up a win.

    Great Day for Mata

SS Ricardo Mata had a great game hitting 5 for 9. It was an insane 17 inning game that Mata helped win in a big 5 run Top of the 17th for Philly that the Reds could not overcome.

Cade Patton voted Player of the Week

LF Cade Patton won the vote with a great week with 13 hits in 28 at bats, 1 HR, 9 RBI and scored 5 times himself. Philly can only hope he keeps playing this well as we are already off to a better start than last season.

Phillies played an extra game in this sim as did everyone else but it was a win so we are happy as we did well this sim with series wins over Miami, Chicago N and split the series with the Nationals. A four gamer with the Dodgers started and that series currently sits at 1-1. Jesse Biddles and Antonio Cruz continue to pitch well or at least well enough to not earn a loss with only 1 a piece. MR Iago Januario is doing well in the relief spot as well with 3 wins and no losses. 2B Heath Fletcher had a good sim with 8 out of 20 hits, 3 HR, and 6 RBI.

LF Lorenzo Tavarres earned EL Player of the Week after he hit the ball 12 out of 30 times (.400) with 4 HR, 5 RBI and scored 5 times. This boosts his season stats greatly as he had only hit 1 HR and had only driven in 8 runs before the week. Looks like this prospect is turning out to be a good pick up.

The Phillies would crap the bed in the final two games of the series with the Dodgers but a nice series win at Coors Field was a nice consolation. Unfortunately that was spoiled when the Padres would come to down and take 2 out of 3 from us. The next sim will feature two interleague series' with the White Sox and Blue Jays. But a big series with Miami could sway things in the East as Atlanta has taken on a big of a lead. 1B Felix Chapa had a good run this recent sim hitting 8/20, .400, 3 HR, 7 RBI while Antonio Cruz is cooling down a bit, earning 2 losses and only fanning 12 in four games with a 12.27 ERA in as many games.

It has been two sims since I have done an update and as you can see the Phillies have slid down the rankings. In the last two sims the Phillies have lost C Patrick Tolentino for a couple of months due to injury and have overall not performed well. Tolentino still leads the team in RBIs even while injured and that is sad, meaning we aren't producing. This sim was a bit better than the previous two (in which we only won one series) as we took series' from Miami and the Dodgers but it was an ugly start as Arizona swept us at home. The back end of our rotation continues to be the best we have while the top three struggle to get any wins.
