The 2013 New Orleans Saints Season Preview

Owner Kris Mims returns after a year hiatus from the game. Speculation of why he decided to return after a year long were quickly answered in his first press conference of the season. " I love the city, I love the fans but most importantly I love the 53 men in that locker room, and our coaching staff. I want to win, badly" Several key pieces are coming back to the Saints in 2013, most importantly is franchise QB Drew Brees, who threw for over 5000 yards for the second season in a row. While the Saints dont expect to run the rock a ton, they do expect both Mark Ingram (600 yards) and Pierre Thomas(475 yards and 40 catches) to help out Darren Sproles who has become a receiving threat out of the backfield (79 receptions)

On defense side MLB Curtis Lofton and Johnathan Vilma anchor a young defense. The Secondary is led by Jabari Greer, Roman Harper and Hard hitting rookie, Kenny Vaccaro.. The Saints look to change their fortunes of a year ago by giving the leagues worst defense title to the City of Saints.

Special teams is rounded out by Garrett Hartley and All world punter Thomas Morstead

Darren Sproles provides a spark in the ground game.. A sign of things to come in 2013?

Going into week 1 vs the Falcons, bad blood was brewing. Darren Sproles made sure that the Saints would not drop their home opener and the return of Sean Payton by racking up 150 yards of total offense and 1 score, as the Saints would ease their way to a 38-7 win. Scoring was not easy as the Falcons and Saints exchanged early turnovers. However on the 3rd play from scrimmage Drew Brees connected on a huge play with 2nd year WR Joseph Morgan on a 65 yard TD to give the Saints the lead.
However, on this day it was not the arm of Drew Brees that carried the team, only connecting on 5-14 for 104 yards and 1 TD. It was the legs of the saints 3 headed monster, Sproles (139 yards) Ingram (128 yards) and Thomas (32 yards) that led the march to victory. The Saints used a great variety of looks and formations to keep the vaunted Falcons defense off balance.

Defensively the Saints recorded 3 sacks, 3 picks and 2 fumble recoveries in the victory. Curts Lofton recorded 4 tackles, 1 interception and 1 tackle for loss in the win.

The Saints hit the road to Tampa in hopes that they can climb to 2-0 inside the division.

Saints Stomp Their Way to Victory Over Bucs

All Smiles in Week 2 For The Saints en route to a 27-0 win
Drew Brees did not drop back as much as anticipated but when he did he made it count. Connecting on 9 of 12 passes for 144 yards and 2 scores, including a 40 yard strike on the Saints first play from scrimmage to Marques Colston. Jimmy Graham also got into the action by hauling in 2 passes for 16 yards and a score. Colston led all recievers with 3 catches for 59 yards.

Once again the running game of Sproles (13-44), Ingram (12-70) and Thomas (5-20) helped eat the clock in the second half after jumping out to a 21-0 lead early in the 3rd Quarter. Known for his pass catching abilities, Sproles is making a name for himself running between the tackles early in the season.

The Bucs Christian Ponder was forced into 5 interceptions, all coming inside the 40 yard line, add in 2 sacks and numerous qb pressures the Saints made his day a nightmare. The muscle hamster only tallied 48 yards on 10 carries. Newly acquired Parys Haralson had 6 tackles to lead the Saints.

Saints win by a feather 21-16 over Cardinals

Saints Defense Forces 4 Turnovers in the Win
While Drew Brees struggles to find his groove in the early part of the season (8-15 122 yards and 3 INT), the running game and defense are picking up the slack as Darren Sproles rushes for 115 yards on 12 carries and Mark Ingram added 2 touch downs as the Saints Clip the Cardinals 21-16. Jimmy Graham added 71 yards on 3 catches.

For the Saints defense this year its personal.. After being considered one of the worst defenses in the history of the NFL, they have forced 12 turnovers and allowed only 23 points in 3 games. Cameron Jordan recorded his 3rd sack of the year and While Patrick Robinson leads the team with 4 INT.

All was not lost for the Cardinals, Marshawn Lynch tallied 86 yards on the ground on 20 carries, while Michael Vick added 47 more. However Vick only completed 11 of 23 passes for 155 yards and 4 INT.

The Saints move to 3-0 on the season, while the Cards move to 0-3

Sproles Scampers Way into Saints Record Books in Win Over Dolphins
    [IMG]
Darren Sproles returned 2 kickoffs and tallied 336 All Purpose Yards

While Drew Brees continues to struggle with moving the ball, it was Darren Sproles who took the game in his own hands, returning 2 kick returns for scores as The Saints eeked out a victory over Miami 31-24.

Ryan Tannehill completed 18-28 for 234 yards and 2 touchdowns in win, including a 65 yard touchdown pass to pull Miami within 7 with under 2 minutes remaining, however it was his 3 interceptions inside the 50 that might have cost his team the win.

Miami got on the scoreboard first with a brandon tate 1 yard touchdown scamper, later the Saints would see Drew Brees hit Colston on a 7 yard slant route to knot the score. After Miami went up by 7, Darren Sproles took his first kickoff 103 yards for the score (later adding a 100 yard return).

While Brees still struggles he made 2 big play in the passing game, on a 3rd and 5 early in the 4th he found a wide open Jimmy Graham for a 47 yard catch. However it was the play action touchdown to Lance Moore, of a 52 yard variety that put the Saints up by 2 scores with 3 minutes remaining.

Defense again came through for the Saints, forcing 3 INT and sacking Tannehill 3 times in the win.

Sproles-less Saints Cruise To Victory 38-12 over Cowboys
    [IMG]
Heading into the game against the Cowboys a lot of critics wondered if the Saints offense would sputter. One game into the Sproles-less Saints, they thrived. Putting up 38 points, including a kick return from Jeremey Kerley en route to a 38-12 final. All the talk was the vaunted Cowboys and their number 1 offense, New Orleans answered the call by allowing 4 field goals and picking off Tony Romo 3 times.

Romo was 16-33 for 270 yards, however it was the first 3 quarters that did him in, unable to move the ball until the game was out of hand as the Saints defense mixed in more zone coverages than usual. His counterpart, Drew Brees threw for 174 yards and only attempted 11 passes, completing 9 of them for 1 score. Mark Ingram earning his first start of the year carried the rock 17 times for 85 yards and 3 touchdowns, paving the way for a more balanced Saints attack.

Special Teams, Kerley avoid upset in 42-34 Thriller Over Rival Birds
    [IMG]

When the Saints acquired Kerley in week 3, they didnt expect him to return 4 kickoffs for touchdowns in 3 games since Sproles injury
Saints defense was exposed for over 400 yards in the Georgia Dome, as Matt Ryan completed 23-34 passes for 329 yards but threw 2 costly picks in the 42-34 defeat to the Saints. After Matt Bryant kicked a 22 yard field goal, Kerley took his 1st of 2 touchdowns 105 yards to the house for a 7-3 lead. After the Saints allowed another long drive for a fg and then a 3 and out, Steven Action Jackson scored on a 3 yard run to give the Falcons a 13-7 lead.

Kerley was not done, taking the next kick 105 yards again to the house and with 2 minutes remaining in the 1st half the Saints had 0 yards of offense, but led 14-13. After a Matt Ryan interception Drew Brees found Lance Moore for a 57 yard touchdown and a 21-13 lead. The Falcons responded back with a 19 yard strike to Julio Jones and a 21-20 deficit at the half.

Lance Moore did his best Jeremy Kerley impression by taking a punt on the left hash and with a return set up for the right weaved his way 80 yards for a score, giving the Saints a 2 touchdown deficit the Falcons could not recover from. The Falcons ran 55 plays from scrimmage while the Saints rain only 28.
