This is my weekly installment critiquing the validity of the polls. With this thread, I am hoping to dissect the placement of all teams throughout the top25, and also look at teams on the outside that maybe should be getting more run.

I am going to include the Preseason Rankings here to start.

Alabama and Penn State are near a split for first place votes, and coming off the end of the season ranked #1 and #2. In the offseason, Alabama had 5 defensive starters taken in the NFL Draft. They also had 6 offensive starters taken in the draft including 80% of their starting line from last season. A big name that declared early, but was not drafted was last years do-everything RB, Eddie Lacy. Lacy declared early, but was shunned in the draft. On the PSU side of things, 4 offensive starters from last season were taken in the draft, including QB Kevin Newsome. They also lost 6 starters on defense including both CB's and last years sack-master Sean Stanley. While yes, both of these teams are constantly reloading, are these two the top two teams in the country? PSU looks like they are going to start Bolden this year, although Paul Jones looks like a hot candidate with a lot better accuracy. They also can't look to any of their TE's this year. Those guys make "Stone Hands" over at Mizzou look amazing. Bama is in need of a new top receiver, and also a new runningback. With a solid line, the Crimson Tide have been able to drag out their running back talent quite a few seasons. This season though, they are young at the RB spot, and they are going to need somebody to step up to take the pressure off of McCarron. Up front on defense, they have some potential, but they are going to need some pressure to cover up some deficiencies in the secondary.

I think that pretty much covers the potential #1's, next week we will go in depth about the teams that can take their spots.

I honestly looked at the depth chart, and knowing how these sliders played, I had a few doubts. To be honest, his TE's play a huge roll in that PB and may be the biggest problem he will face this season.

Well, PSU is out of the top 10 with an opening week loss to one of my sleeper teams, South Carolina. Also dropping out of the top 10 were Iowa and Florida. Iowa lost against a Pittsburgh team that is without Dion Lewis and James Baldwin. Florida lost in overtime to a tough Miami squad. The top ten gets a little bit of a shake-up, but Alabama remains #1 after a comeback win against UNC, and Michigan slides in to the #2 spot. Michigan basically took all of PSU's first place votes over, so it is again pretty close between #1 and #2. Inside the top 10, you have a few teams that don't look top 10 quality. The first team that comes to mind is Baylor. While yes, they have an incredible defense that seems like it has been together forever, their offense is only one game in with most of the starters. The next team that catches my eye is TAMU. They have a pretty decent offense, but if your defense can't get folks off the field, what good is an offense. Last but not least, Notre Dame. They have a tough game coming up with #2 Michigan. I have not looked at their roster yet, but against a tough user like JC, this will not be an easy win for Notre Dame.

    Mike
