    2011 Utah Utes Season Preview

This is a very exciting time for Utah football. We're joining a new conference with an AQ bid and handing the reigns over to a new coach. Given the amount of change that faces the Utes, the million dollar question is "how will they cope with the change?"

    Pac12:
There's no question that the Pac12 is a much more competitive conference than what the Utes have grown accustomed to in the MWC. Utah has a decent team this year and could've challenged Boise and TCU for the MWC crown, but how will they fare with the likes of USC, Oregon, and Stanford? The favorites to win the Pac12 are in the north in Oregon and Stanford so, on the bright side, Utah won't have to compete with the top tier teams in order to make the CCG. There should really only be 2 teams standing in Utah's way to the CCG; USC and Arizona. ASU is okay at best and Colorado and UCLA blow chunks. Whomever wins the 3 game series between USC, Utah, and Arizona should have the edge in the race for the CCG. Once there, the winner will likely face a superior team, but the phrase "any given Saturday" can be invoked.

    Coach Jello:
The other major change is coming in the form of new coach Jello. Jello's offensive philosophy is in stark contrast to the pro style team that has been built in Utah so Utah's success this season could rest upon how well coach Jello can get his players to play in his system. There's no question that Jello will need to rebuild, but the true test of his coaching ability will be how well he can do before he can get his guys on the field.

    Prognosis:
Utah's players will need to adjust quickly to their new offensive style as well as quickly learning how to handle playing against athletes that are bigger, stronger, and faster than them. If they can make these transitions quickly, then they have the talent to receive a bowl bid in coach Jello's first season. Utah will likely not make the CCG this year or receive a BCS bowl bid, but going to a bowl game will be considered a success this year.

HB Palamo flexes for the disappointed Fresno crowd

Utah Runs over Bulldogs in coach Jello's debut

Utah flexed both their offensive and defensive muscles in this one. Utah gave up a whopping 6 yards of total offense in the 1st half as they held the ball for 13 of 16 minutes and allowed 0 first downs. Rugby sensation Thretton Palamo led the offense with 87 yards and 3 TDs in the 1st half (he'd finish with 96 yards) leading the Utes to a 21-0 halftime lead. Fresno would manage 14 points in the 2nd half, but this one was never in danger.

Utah's running game was deadly as they amassed 211 yards and 4 TDs while QB Jordan Wynn was very efficient as he completed all 9 of his passes in the game.

Utah Fires On All Cylinders Against Northwestern

Thretton Palamo runs over a defender en route to a 70 yard TD carry

Utah's offense is able to execute coach Jello's gameplan while their defense makes enough stops when they needed to this Saturday. The Wildcats opened the scoring with a 16 yd TD pass from Persa to Dunsmore with 1 minute remaining in the 1st. 47 seconds later Utah HB Thretton Palamo was celebrating in the endzone after taking a pitch 70 yards after running over a NW DB.

Utah would add a FG in the 2nd quarter and then Palamo would punch it in from 1 yard out for his 2nd TD of the game with 1 minute remaining in the half. After a quick 3 and out, Utah forced the Wildcats to punt. With only 20s remaining and the ball on their own 27 yd line, coach Jello decided to roll the dice. Jordan Wynn would hit WR Anthony Denham for a 73 yard strike to give the Utes a 24-7 halftime lead.

After another quick 3 and out to start the 2nd half, Utah would strike quickly again with their 3rd TD of 50+ yards within 2:07 of game time on a nice end around run by WR Luke Matthews (I tried to get a vid of this, but EA is retarded). Utah went into cruise control from their as they ate up lots of clock with their power rushing attack and would close the book on the Wildcats with a 34-17 win for their 2nd road victory to start the season.

The game ball went to HB Thretton Palamo with 119 yds and 2 TDs on 17 carries. Honorable mention goes to the entire Ute defense as they were solid all around. For the 2nd consecutive game, QB Jordan Wynn was very efficient as he completed all 9 of his passes for 127 yards and 1 TD.

Next up is Utah's home opener and their Pac12 debut against a very tough USC opponent.

Utes Win First Ever Pac12 Game

    [IMG] [IMG]

    [IMG] [IMG]

Utah faced a tough foe in their debut Pac12 game and they ended up surviving it. Things started off better than anyone could've dreamed for as the 1st play from scrimmage saw USC QB Barkley throw an INT. It wasn't all roses, however as star HB Thretton Palamo left the game with a mild concussion in the 1st quarter after only 4 carries and star QB Jordan Wynn (the only QB worth a damn) would leave the game in the 3rd quarter due to injury. Wynn's backup didn't lose the game or the lead, which was all that was expected, while Palamo's backup Johnny White played brilliantly. White did his best Thretton impression as he gained 131 yards and 1 TD on 21 carries.

The Utes made the plays when they had to, including 2 4th down conversions just outside of FG range and a great catch and run by WR Matthews on a crucial 3rd and 10. He caught the ball short of the 1st down, but broke a tackle and got the 1st down and more. The next play saw Jordan Wynn hit WR Christopher for a 9 yard TD.

As if starting the Pac12 schedule with USC wasn't bad enough, next the Utes will face off against #4 Stanford.

    Close, But No Cigar

QB Jordan Wynn left the game early in the 2nd and Utah was unable to overcome this injury

Utah knew that they were outmanned coming into this matchup with #4 Stanford, but when they lost their star QB Jordan Wynn early in the 2nd quarter the task became even more daunting. Wynn's subpar backup did more damage than good as he threw 2 picks including a crucial pick 6 to close out the 1st half. With Wynn on the shelf, the already heavy load on HB Thretton Palamo's shoulders became even heavier. He was nearly man enough to handle it, but despite a brilliant day, he'll be remembered for 1 play.

The game couldn't have started better for the Utes. On the 3rd play of the game, Palamo rumbled 53 yards for a TD to put Utah up 7-0. This was followed by a 3 and out for Stanford. The Utes' offense wasn't able to manage any more points in the 1st and Stanford would add 2 FGs to cut the deficit to 7-6. Palamo would strike again with 2 minutes left in the half with a 4 yard TD run to put Utah up 14-6, but Andrew Luck would hit Owusu about 2 inches from the sideline on a 47yd TD catch. Then, Utah's crappy backup QB would throw a 66 yard pick 6 to give Stanford a 20-14 halftime lead.

Utah got back to their grinding ways and Stanford's Taylor and Utah's Palamo would each get TD runs to keep the Stanford lead @ 6. In the 4th, Utah's defense played bend, but don't break but couldn't get the Cardinal off of the field. Finally, with about 3-4 minutes left in the game Stanford was driving deep into Utah territory. They had a 4th and 1 on the Utah 30, but the Stanford coach elected to go for it instead of kicking the FG to put them up by 9. They got the first down, but shortly after Luck would throw an interception, giving the Utes the ball, only down by 6.

The Utes' drive was nearly short lived as they faced a 4th and 1 on their own 30 yard line, but with under 3 minutes left, coach Jello elected to go for it and got the 1st down. Utah methodically drove the ball down the field and had the ball on the Stanford 25 yard line with 1:27 left on the clock. The Cardinal seemed unable to stop Palamo who had gained the majority of the yards on the drive on the ground. After gaining 194 yards and 3 TDs in the game and putting his team on his back on the potential game winning drive, Palamo was assured to get much cheerleader ass tonight. On the next play however, Palamo was absolutely destroyed by OLB Blake Lueders and he coughed the ball up which was then returned 75 yards by Stanford.

Arizona State Snags Utah Coach Jello Biafra and Then Beats USC in LA

ASU had to go 3 deep on their HB depth chart against the hard hitting Trojan defense

Under new coach Jello, ASU handled USC for most of the game until the Trojans make a last ditch effort to win. Using the ground game the Devils took a 10-0 halftime lead. On the way they lost their #4 WR/#1 KR who returned the opening kickoff 76 yards and they lost their #1 HB for the game. They also lost their #2 HB for a quarter so coach Jello was digging deep into the cupboards.

USC scrapped back to make it 19-14 with 30s to go and no time outs. They moved the ball down the field against the conservative Devil defense and got the ball to the ASU 30 yard line with 1s left on the clock. They hurried up to the line and spiked the ball but the clock ran out. However, they snapped the ball before a fat ass DT of ASU could get back across the line of scrimmage so they got 1 free shot at the end zone. The ball hit the WR in the hands in the end zone but it was jarred loose, sealing the debut victory for coach Jello.

Immediately upon hearing the good news that coach Jello had arrived in Tempe, the coaches immediately voted ASU into the top 25.

ASU Pounds Beavers in First Game as Ranked Team
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Defense was the chant of the day as the Devils Black Shirt defense ruled the day. The Devils' Black Shirts only allowed 23 yards of offense in the 1st half. They forced 3 INTs. They sacked the QB 5 times. Most importantly, they only allowed 3 Beaver points (the other 7 came on a scoop and score). They were in Katz's face all day long and never allowed him to get comfortable. He ended the day with nearly as many INTs (3) as completions (5) on 15 attempts. They weren't able to mount a ground assault either as they only gained 19 yards on 23 carries.

Next week the Devils will fly to Salt Lake City to battle the Utah Utes who are still feeling jilted by the sudden departure of coach Jello. They will surely want to win this game more than any other this season.

Coach Jello Returns to SLC to Whip His Former Team
    [IMG]
Jordan Wynn had one of the most physically painful games of his career

Coach Jello used his intimate knowledge of the Utes to pick them apart and dominate them in Salt Lake City. The Devils' defense was brutal as they sacked Wynn 5 times and forced him to fumble twice. Offensively, ASU used their normal ground and pound attack and converted 8 of 11 3rd down conversions.

Next up for the Devils is a trip to Eugene to face their highest ranked opponent on the season in #12 Oregon.

#12 Ducks Have Wings Clipped By Devils
    [IMG]

Arizona State's defense continues to impress as they completely shut down the vaunted Oregon spread attack. They held the ducks to only 3 points, 184 yards of offense, 2 of 8 3rd down conversions, while forcing 3 turnovers. QB Darron Thomas looked clueless out there while a very dangerous LaMichael James had the worst game of his career, gaining 5 yards on 11 carries.

On the other side of the ball, QB Brock Osweiler did his job, completing the passes he needed to, but HB Cameron Marshall stole the show with a 189 yard, 3 TD performance. The Devils will be off next week and then they have what should be 3 easy wins @Colorado and then hosting UCLA and WSU.

There are some other nice highlights on the DW.

Following his shredding of the Oregon defense, star HB Marshall got the nod as the Pac12 POTW. He is the first Sun Devil to win this award this season. Marshall gained 189 yards on the ground and pounded the ball into the endzone 3 times for TDs including a beautiful 47 yard run up the gut.

Hapless Buffs No Match For Devils

    [IMG] [IMG]

ASU's defense was dominant once again, this time against the awful Colorado Buffaloes. In this game, the Devils' offense was just as potent. Thanx in no small part to ASU converting 10 of 11 3rd down attempts and CU turning the ball over 4 times, the Devils dominated the TOP 24 minutes to 8. The Devils' ground game was once again punishing, but they had a passing attack in this game as well.

It's tough to award a game ball today as HB Cameron Marshall had 170 total yards and 4 total TDs while the defensive unit tallied an astounding 8 sacks while forcing 4 turnovers and didn't allow a point until the 4th quarter. Next week the Devils will start their 4 game homestand to end the season by hosting the UCLA Bruins, a team that has already beaten 3 user teams.

Chalk up another W For the Devils

ASU's defense dominates the Bruins as the Devil offense had a tough time of it this week. At the end of the 1st half Cameron Marshall punched it into the end zone from 8 yards out to put us up 16-0. The play was reviewed, however, and it was determined that the ball was on the 1 foot line instead (coach Jello vehemently disagreed, but to no avail), 2nd and goal. After two failed shots to punch it in, the Devils settled for a FG as time expired instead. After this emotional letdown, the Devils' offense never looked the same and was very sluggish in the 2nd half. Luckily the defense played great all game and was able to hold on for the win.

    Cougars Are Declawed
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Washington State gets destroyed by Arizona State. For those Devils fans that feared ASU might have been looking forward to their rivalry game next week, worry no more. This was by far the most dominating performance by the Devils so far this year. They held the Cougs to only 237 yards of offense, 7 points, and 1 of 11 3rd down conversions. Offensively, we had 593 yards of offense, 377 rushing yards, and 55 points (all season highs). The rushing attack was led by HBs Marshall and Lewis who both had 100 yard days (208 and 123 respectively). When asked if this game shows that his team is starting to really gel, coach Jello said "Not at all. After all, this was only Washington State. It was like playing a high school team out there."

Next week the Devils will host the Wildcats of Arizona for the Territorial Cup.

Defense Wins The Day For the Devils

    [IMG] [IMG]

    [IMG] [IMG]

The ASU defense really stepped up in this game for ASU to keep them undefeated in the Pac12 this season. The offense struggled and the defense gave up some big plays, but the D really stepped up when they needed to. Offensively, star HB Cam Marshall did a decent job of moving the Devils down the field. He had 99 yards on 23 carries, but it was the big FB Josh Fulton who did the scoring. He was rewarded for all of his blocking on the season with 2 short TD runs against our arch rivals.

Besides the 2 TD runs by Fulton, there are 2 main stats in this game, both of which are related. The Devil defense gave up some yards as they allowed the Cats to march down the field frequently, but their red zone defense was stupendous. While ASU got 2 TDs and 2 FGs in their 4 red zone trips, the wildcats got a goose egg in their 4 red zone appearances. This was due in great part to the 3 red zone (2 @ or past the goal line) INTs by ASU. Couple those 3 picks with a missed 25ish yard FG by the Arizona kicker and it was a great day of red zone defense for ASU.

ASU just brushed aside the overmatched Bears today

ASU finished out the regular season on a strong note with a 42-3 blasting of Da Bears in Tempe. They were led by their stout defense (ranked #1 and #2 in the nation in points allowed and yards given up respectively) but their rushing attack made a statement. Cameron Marshal was his usual stellar self as he gained 168 yards and 3 TDs in only 3 quarters of play, but it was his backups, playing mostly behind the 2nd string O-line that were just as good. #2 guy Deonte Lewis gained 61 yards and 2 TDs on only 9 carries, while 3rd stringer Middlebrooks had 78 yards on 4 carries.

Defensively, it was the usual. They only gave up 170 yards, 100 passing yards, 0 of 8 3rd down conversions, and only allowed Cal to have the ball for 9 minutes of the game. Next the Devils will head west to Stanford for the Pac12 CCG.

    Pac12 CCG:
    #11 ASU 21
    #2 Stanford 7
(At the risk of sounding like a broken record) Defense and Cam Marshall's Running Does It Again For ASU
    [IMG]

In the inaugural Pac12 CCG, ASU traveled to Stanford to face the best team they've faced all season knowing that they'd have to play a perfect game to win this one. Luckily for Devils' fans, that's exactly what they did. The ASU defense befuddled the best player in the nation Andrew Luck while Cameron Marshall had his usual studly performance. Just in case that wasn't enough, Devil QB Brock Osweiler had a rare moment of clarity and turned in his best performance of the season.

ASU opened the scoring in the first on a rare Oswelier TD pass to Gerrel Robinson. Midway through the 2nd quarter stud Marshal would punch it in from 4 yards out to put ASU up 14-0. The Cardinal wouldn't roll over, however, as Luck would connect with Fleener for an 18 yd TD pass to pull them within 1 score, but that turned out to be their only score and they'd never get closer. Early in the 3rd Cameron "all he does is score TDs" Marshall would follow his blockers on a beautiful 29 yd TD run to finish the scoring. The 4th quarter saw ASU just beat Stanford into submission as they controlled the clock and just got 1st down after 1st down after 1st down.

The numbers in this one were pretty impressive:
    • ASU held the potent Stanford offense to only 170 yards compared to 386 for ASU
    • The Cardinal only converted 2 of 6 1st downs compare to an impressive 10 of 13 for ASU.
    • Luck had an off night completing only 8 of 16 passes for 97 yards, 1 TD, and 2 INTs.
    • Osweiler played out of his mind completing 15 of 16 for 235 yards, 1 TD, and most importantly, 0 INTs.
    • Marshall was his usual solid self gaining 164 yards on 29 carries (5.6 YPC) and 2 more TDs.
The Devils will now relax at home as they await their birth in the Rose Bowl.

    Season 2: week1
Fasten your seat belts Devils' fans, this season's gonna be a bumpy ride
    [IMG]

#6TCU completely outplayed the very overrated #7 ASU in Fort Worth. If this game is an indication of what the season's going to be like, it's gonna be a rough one. Despite his 138 yards and 7.6 YPC on 18 carries, it was very tough sledding for Cameron Marshall as his numbers are skewed by a 66 yarder. He had far more carries under 2 yards than he had ones over 2 which meant that ASU had to pass the ball a lot. This is where we showed just how bad we could be this year. SR QB Osweiler completed 7 of 15 passes, but he was sacked an astonishing 11 times (meaning he as sacked 42% of the time he dropped back to pass)! Prior to their last offense play of the game, ASU could only account for 115 yards of total offense in the game.

The kids from TCU were very noticeably bigger and stronger than the Devils, be it their D-line breaking through our O-line with ease, or their HB absolutely steamrolling our safeties, or their O-line steamrolling our D-line (see the vid on DW of their QB running the ball as I think I had 8 guys flattened on that play). With all that said, however, our offense did not turn the ball over and our defense played just well enough to keep us close.

ASU was down 4 late in the 4th and driving. They got into FG range, but after a sack they were left with 4th and long and had to settle for a 49yd FG. After hitting 2 51 yarders earlier in the game, the kicker pushed this one left so we were still down by 4. After a defensive stop, we had the ball on our own 35 yard line with 1:28 remaining, still down 4. After an incomplete pass that bounced out of the CB's hands and into my receiver's hands on the TCU 35 yard line only to be knocked loose by a jarring hit by the safety it was 2nd and 10. Following sacks #10 and #11, it was 4th and 26 on our own 19 yard line with 1 minute to go. For one of the very rare times during the game, the O-line held back the TCU rush and Osweiler hit a streaking Pickens for the go ahead score on an 81 yard TD pass. TCU would drive and get to midfield and were down to 4th and 10, still outside of FG range. The QB completed a 9.5 yard pass that was just short and ASU wins 20-17.

Next week we travel to Madison to face our 2nd straight top 20 team on the road and unless our O-line dramatically improves in 7 days, that game could be really, really ugly.

    Here We Go Again

The fears after our terrible showing in week 1 are clearly justified. The Devils looked like a JV team compared to the Badgers. The Wisconsin lines absolutely mauled and destroyed the Devil front lines. The Badgers racked up 300 yards on the ground and their QB was never even hurried, let alone sacked. On the other side, the Devils QBs were sacked 7 times (21% of their drop backs). This will indeed be a very long season for the Devils.

The goal was never to gain a 5th star of prestige this season (as that's unrealistic with this crappy team) but it now looks like maintaining that 4th star (finish in the top 50) could be in jeopardy as well.
