The Swamp report

Week 1 saw the Florida Gators host #16 Wisconsin. The Gators coming in were picked to finished 11th of 12 in the SEC so they were ready to play the underdog roll. The offense was slow to get moving all day long with a missed FG in the 1st quarter and only 2 touchdowns all day long as the running game was slow to find its grove. The Badgers offense had no trouble moving ball through the air, but also could not run it, but they would manage a couple of touchdowns as well, and make there only FG attempt. The difference in this game was from a very unlikely source as WR Jimmy Mansfield (who was the #3 QB for the Gators last season) who had won the #2 KR job in practice this week took back the kickoff following a Badgers FG 89 yards for the first touchdown of coach Penguins reign in the Swamp. The as Wisconsin lined up for a long FG Mansfield would come up with the play of the game as time expired in the 2nd quarter...........

The teams would trade touchdowns in the 4th, and the Gators running game came to life just enough to hold of the Badgers and get the important 1st home win of the season.

Week 2 had the Gators going on the road to battle there in state rival the Hurricanes. The offense was slow early, but the defense on both sides was forcing turnovers as the ball proved hard to hold onto with big hits and strips on both sides with the Gators having a nice one early in the 2nd quarter........

Despite the big defensive plays the Gators would trail at the half as star WR Debose was knocked out of the game in the 1st half with a bruised elbow, thankfully he will return next week, and big play specialist Jimmy Mansfield took back another kickoff for a touchdown.
The 3rd quarter saw the Gators take back over as the would out score the Canes 23-7 in the half, and the play that got it going was Mansfield once again. Doing what he does best it was for the second week in a row a missed FG fell into his hands.......

The Gators then would get the breathing room they needed to put it away on a 4th and inches play as there stud RB Mike Gillislee took it to the house.....

Week 3 had Cal coming to visit the Gators and as the Gators offense is still searching for some continuity as RB Mike Gillislee took his very first touch to the house........

The Gators would struggle for consistency on both offense and defense the rest of the way, but they had enough to hold of the visiting Golden Bears thanks to the surprise star of this season in QB turned WR Jimmy Mansfield who scored his 5th touchdown of the season, and a crazy 3rd off a missed FG...

Week 4 had the Vols coming to visit. It was not pretty, the Gators offensive struggles compounded as the Vols press coverage stunted the pathetic passing game and the Gators running game had a little luck but it was all but abandon far too early. This game taught us a lot, and some changes are forth coming on offense and defense as at least 2 new starters are likely to be named before the next game. The Gators defense fared a little better forcing a few turnovers, but never put any consistent pressure on the Tennessee offense.

Week 5 Florida traveled to Kentucky searching for there first SEC win of coach penguins career. Shortly before kickoff a big change for the Gators offense was announced as starting QB Casey Bryant who has been ravaged by opponents pass rush and thrown many picks as a result of being hit as he tried to release the ball, was demoted to 3rd string. Taking over was (rs) junior Joel Reynolds; Reynolds had been out played in spring ball by Bryant, but his ability to provide some mobility and throw on the run was something the Gators offense really seemed to need. The Gators offense opened the game strong, moving the ball at will, but the defense was not holding up there end surrendering several big play for touchdowns as the secondary was a step slow and missing tackles left and right. Coach made a change at the half benching his top rated CB who had been playing the #1 CB spot all season so far, his lack of speed was proving deadly to the Gators defense as he has given up touchdowns off big plays all season long, so now with speed at each of the CB spots the Gators shut down the Wildcats passing game in the second half. Coach did confirm that this change looks to be permanent. The Gators offense really hit there stride in the 3rd quarter with both the passing and running game getting it done. First it was starting RB Mike Gillislee ripping off a nice run ..........

Later in the quarter backup RB Maurice Prater took a short pass and broke a tackle and made another man miss to get into the endzone for the second time as he also took a kickoff back for the Gators 6th non offensive touchdown of the season...........

Week 6 would be another very tough test as the Gators would attempt to defend there home turf from the Ole Miss Rebels. The Gators offense would get the first chance at points driving deep into Rebels territory but forced into a 3rd and long at the 18. Coach Penguin put trust in playmakers and told QB Joel Reynolds to get the ball to WRAndre Debose, and he did even in double coverage..............

A couple drives later Reynolds threaded the needle yet again, this time finding true freshman TE Tye Thorton from 5 yards out.........

The Gators defense would manage to keep the tough running game of the Rebels under control with a big game from star LB Jon Bostic, who forced two fumbles, this one ending a Rebels drive as the Gators fell on it...

The Gators defense was doing there part, and the passing game had given the offense a lift, but the running game looked to be in trouble as star RB Mike Gillislee was knocked out of the game after a productive first half that saw him gain 51 yards on 14 attempts and reach the endzone once as well. Backup RB Maurice Prater got the call and while he started very slow, but came through with a late touchdown run to make it a two score game...........

Now it was on the defense to hold off the Rebels and secure the important home win. Bostic was the man to get it done as on a 4th and inches inside the Gators 20 he came laid out the Rebel RB with a crushing hit to clinch the victory......

Week 7, it was LSU. And well we knew they would tough, and that they had speed at the skill positions. But when we failed to make adjustments to what they were doing it was over before we knew it. All we can do from here on out is to be ready to make in game changes, and do it quickly. Coach Penguin does promise the Gator nation that such a beating will not happen again under his watch, as the team did not fight nearly hard enough and did not look prepared.
