    The Texas Longhorns

Texas opened up Conference play this week against The Texas Tech Red Raiders. The game started off with the Red Raiders receiving the ball, after a quick 3 in out the Longhorns had the ball back for their first possession of the game. In a very fluid offensive drive the Longhorns put the ball in the painted area on the field to open the game with a 7-0 lead. Once the Longhorns scored the Red Raiders game plan was nothing but an Air Assault, this was the main reason for 7 different Longhorns recording sacks on the day. That reason is more than likely why the Red Raiders were only able to get 9 total points on the day with a total disregard for any attempt at a real running game thus allowing the Longhorn defenders to pin their ears back and get after the QB. The Longhorns were able to return a Kickoff at the beginning of the second half by Senior, Shipley. The Longhorns were able to dodge most of the bullets taking home a very crucial win over the Red Raiders, 26-9.

    Recruiting Front:
4 Visits by Recruits during the Red Raider game. Hopefully we can land a few of these guys in week 4.

    Texas Gets Another Win...

#2 RANKED TEXAS IMPROVES TO 4-0 GOING INTO THEIR BYE...

    Colt McCoy: 17/28 for 254 yards and 6 TD's

Reporter: Coach you got win number 4 of the season tell us about that...

Coach ThaEra25: We went out there and secured a win against a very talented UTEP team that came here ready to play, which was evident in the 1st half. We had a pretty good performance but also had some mistakes which will be addressed during the bye week.

Reporter: Coach what mistakes specifically did you see out there today?

Coach ThaEra25: The defense didn't start the game with the same intensity that our offense went out there with. We gave up 2 really big plays in that first quarter both resulting in 14 points against us. It seemed as if every time our offense scored, our defense gave up a big play to put them right back in the game. They scored first on us with that 54 yard screen pass in which our defenders didn't exhibit good fundamental tackling allowing that shifty Runningback of theirs to score. The other big play was when UTEP's Runningback took it 63 yards to the house. The defensive line on that play just got dominated, creating major lanes in our defense.

Reporter: Coach, its obvious this defense came out in the 2nd half refocused, resulting in a second half shut out. What was the mindset coming out of halftime?

Coach ThaEra25: When we went in to the locker room at half time, I personally had a conversation with our defense about responsibilty and effort. I just felt like they were very flat and undisciplined in their approach and I wanted to see them perform better. They came out flying to the ball, getting penetration up field, making plays on the ball and caused 4 turnovers, one being a TD. The boys really took a step in the right direction in being able to adjust by correcting their mistakes and to have some accountability for their play on the field.

Reporter: Even though the defense struggled early, the offense came out blazing, what do you attribute that to?

Coach ThaEra25: Well first off, we have a wonderful leader at Quarterback in Colt McCoy and he always has them ready to roll.

Reporter: Coach who was another big time player today?

Coach ThaEra25: Johnson, I mean...Have you seen a more complete back than this guy? He had 30 carries for 208 yards with a touchdown, but the most impressive stat was 80 yards after first contact. That says a lot about a player and his mindset during that game. The whole receiving core including the TE who had 2 TD's on the day.

Reporter: Efficiency of the offense as you see it?

Coach ThaEra25: We had 7 red zone visits, 6 were TD's and 1 FG on the day, thats pretty efficient to me.

Reporter: Any new news on the Recruiting front?

Coach ThaEra25: We had 2 recruits sign at the start of week 4, the FB and DE. We have 4 key recruits coming to our wk 6 game against Colorado and we are hoping to receive a few commits during this time.

Reporter: Coach it seems as the #2 team in the nation you may be flying under the radar so to speak, your thoughts?

Coach ThaEra25: Whether we are under the radar or on top of it, we are still gonna continue to play Texas Longhorn football and just keep moving forward. Never look in the review mirror, always through the windshield other wise you may get to caught up in who's behind you instead of focusing on the task at hand.

    Week 6 Press Conference (Colorado)

Reporter: Coach, how did you keep the team focused on Colorado with a crucial game coming in week 7 against Oklahoma?

Coach Era: Everbody is human and there is no doubt our players see that game in two weeks and get amped, it's our job as coaches to channel that energy and create focus this week at the task at hand. They understand that a win against Colorado is the only thing right now that makes the game against Oklahoma mean what we want it to mean.

Reporter: What did you use for motivation this week?

Coach Era: Same as every week, the desire to Win.

Reporter: What was a point of emphasis this week during preparation?

Coach Era: Minimizing mistakes on both sides of the ball. Our defense played great in the second half last week but stumbled out the blocks giving up 3 big plays in that first half. Everyday after practice we showed them those 3 plays on film to show the defense what happens when we lose focus. On offense we had some dropped balls, missed assignments, and wrong reads so we wanted to let them know they need to execute better.

Reporter: How's recruiting going so far?

Coach Era: As most people know, we have received two commits from the FB and DE. We have a handful of guys coming this week to campus for the game and we hoping that we receive some commits after the game. Everybody is working really hard on this right now and as pleased as we are in the process we still have a lot of work left to do.

Reporter: Last question Coach, what are you looking for in this game against Colorado?

Coach Era: Mainly, we want to see a lot of effort out there and play a better all around game in all three parts of the game: offense, defense, and special teams. Obviously we want the defense to play more disciplined and stop giving up the big play and the offense needs to sustain drives and give the defense time to rest and make adjustments.

    Press Conference: Post Colorado/Pre Oklahoma

Reporter: Coach all week long the spot light was on your Defense and how they would respond to the challenges that your staff presented to them for #22 Colorado. In your mind, how did they respond?

Coach Era: I am very proud of how our defense played against a good Colorado team. We wanted to work on better tackling and assignment responsibility and I think we did that very well, which was evident in allowing -17 yards rushing and under 175 yards of total offense. We focused all week long on forcing turnovers, we had a few of those with one being returned for a TD. We just gotta keep these boys playing with that same intensity and focus the rest of the way.

Reporter: Coach, it seems like every week your offense shows up and puts points on the board, can you just touch on that?

Coach Era: Well for the most part those guys are on point and we really feel confident in their abilities. Colt had another great day running the offense and Johnson chipped in with his usual effort. We have some great leaders on that side of the ball so a Coach's job isn't too difficult when it comes to them.

Reporter: Aight Coach, last week your task was to keep your boys focused on Colorado with a big time game on the horizon. Now that Colorado is out the way, how are you preparing for your showdown with #1 Oklahoma, in The Red River Shootout?

Coach Era: To be perfectly honest, we prepare each week the same. Now of course different teams present different challenges but for the most part we stick too what we do.

Reporter: Coach, what is your biggest concern regarding Oklahoma?

Coach Era: Murray, plain and simple. That guy is one of the main reasons they are #1 in the nation, I mean he is a Heisman canidate and it shows. Our Defense is gonna have to stay in their lanes and swarm to the ball in order to negate the big play. If we can some how contain him we have a good chance in the game, if not, it could be a long day.

Reporter: Coach, with this being hyped as a game that could have National Title implications, how do you control that energy and excitment in your players?

Coach Era: It's hard...With this game already being a big time Rivalry game between the two teams and a game against #1 and #2, its our jobs to make sure the kids understand the importance of this game and have them fully prepared. Since day one we have emphasized the importance of winning the conference in order to have a shot at the National Title, just so happens this game against Oklahoma is a big part of both those goals. Look, everybody knows the importance of this game and I would be willing to bet that both teams will be prepared and ready to go.

    Texas defeats Oklahoma...

Reporter: Coach that was an impressive win over a very good Oklahoma team, how important was this game?

Coach Era: That game was a huge game on a lot of levels. We wanted to see just how good our Defense was against one of the best Offenses in College Football. We also knew that a win would put us in a great position in our Conference and Nationally. I'm very pleased with the teams performance but also realize we still have a lot of football to be played.

Reporter: The big talk all week was how your Top 3 Defense would play against the Nations leading rusher in D. Murray, your assessment?

Coach Era: I am very proud of our Defensive unit, they have really stepped up since the second half of the UTEP game. Everybody knows the talent Murray and that offensive line of the Sooners has when it comes to running the ball, so to hold him to 38 yards on 12 attempts speaks volumes for us. Some credit for that also has to go to our Offense jumping out early and putting them in bad situations.

Reporter: Coach what can you tell us about Johnson's injury?

Coach Era: Johnson has a dislocated knee and will be out for 4 weeks. Hopefully he can rehab ASAP and come back from this but in the meantime we have to keep moving so McGee will assume the starting roll and we shouldn't see that much of a drop off, if any, with him. McGee played well when he came in for Johnson, he had 27 carries for 80 yards.

Reporter: Coach after that win a lot of folks are saying yall have a legitimate shot at the title, what are your thoughts?

Coach Era: No doubt that was a big win but to start saying things like that is ridiculous. We still have some tough conference games left to play and I dont think those teams are gonna allow us to win just because we are "suppose" too.

Reporter: Thompson, the 5 star RB , has committed, how is recruiting shaping up?

Coach Era: Yes, Thompson has commited along with some other recruits. All these guys we are going after are a big part of the recruiting picture, so we are pleased when any of these guys put the ink to paper. Hopefully we can land the other guys we have targeted in the weeks to come.

    Can you see me now???
Reporter: Impressive win out there Coach against the Cowboys. How hard was it to come on the Road and get a victory over #4 Oklahoma State?

Coach Era: Well we knew this game was going to be a fight from the start to the end, you know most Conference games are just that. We knew the crowd would be in the game early but we had plans to take them out of the equation as soon as possible. Coming into this game the Defense had been playing top notch ball but the explosive Cowboys Offense had us worried on some aspects of the game.

Reporter: Coach a lot has been said about your Defense and your team's ability to stop the run, basically at will. Hunter, the Cowboys RB, was able to put up over 100 yards on the ground, first time all year a Back has done this to your Defense. What happened out there?

Coach Era: Well first, you have to tip your hat to those guys. It seemed early that they were going to try and establish the running game early in order to attack later down field with the Play Action game. We pretty much understood that and I think we over analyzed a lot of plays and Hunter was able to capitalize on us being out of our lanes trying to make a play.

Reporter: The game started out pretty much even with both teams going back and forth but it seemed as if your team came out firing on all cylinders in the 3rd quarter, what was the turning point?

Coach Era: Yeah, early in the game it felt like we never really got anything going offensively. We were up 10-6 about midway through the 2nd quarter and OK St. had the ball inside the red zone and was really putting a nice drive together. I believe they were on the 7 yard line or so when Robinson ran an option play to the left side of the field. We had good pursuit by the OLB and he ended up getting to the QB but somehow Robinson got the pitch off to Hunter. When he caught that pitch, all I saw was Thomas lay the hit on Hunter and the ball popped out instantly. Norton ended up scooping the ball up and returned it 83 yards for the TD, putting us up 17-6 at that point. If you think about it if they score right there, they take the lead 13-10 and this might have been a totally different ball game. That gave us the lead at Half Time and allowed us to come out with some momentum in the second half.

Reporter: Coach it seems like every week now your offense is putting up 40 points on teams, what has been the key to success so far?

Coach Era: We have a good leader at QB in Colt McCoy. The kid just knows how to win ball games and make the big throws when we need them. He went 12/20 for 228 yards and 4 TD's, never putting our team in bad situations. Another guy that needs some credit is McGee, he replaced Johnson in the starting lineup this week and performed as we thought he would. Over 100 yards on the day with 23 carries...We'll look for more of this in the coming weeks...I'll end with telling Coach Sniper, Good Game...We gotta get ready for UCF now.

    Sloppy...

Reporter: Coach, you won the game to improve to 9-0 on the season against UCF but it wasn't pretty early on. What do you think happened out there?

Coach Era: What happened out there?? That was horrible, plain and simple. We didn't match their intensity from the start and it left us in bad situations early. I don't know what the problem is...Yeah I do, I think some of our guys are starting to drink the Kool Aid that the media and fans are serving up and forgetting that the game is actually won on the field. Everyone knows our goal is to play for the National Title but the way we played out there against UCF, is not the way a National Champion plays. We as a Coaching Staff must get our guys back focused and hungry or we will not achieve our goal. Thats it today guys, we have some work to do...

Tension mounts in Longhorn country after a lack luster performance by the #1 Team in the Nation...Up next is Baylor and The Longhorns need to get back on track in order to stay a top the BCS standings...

    Still Undefeated...

#2 Texas Takes Down #4 Kansas
    [IMG]
Reporter: Coach, very impressive win over #4 Kansas. Going into this game your team was ranked #2 in the BCS Standings. With this win, do you think your team should be ranked #1?

Coach Era: To be honest it really doesnt matter to us what anybody has us ranked, our team continuing to play hard and consistent football down the stretch and finish strong in conference is what matters to us. We still have a game against TAM that we have to play and then we have our Conference Championship to play. Once thats done and our team has hopefully taken care of business, we think we should have a shot at the National Title, regardless of our current ranking.

Reporter: Your Defense once again showed up in a big game and performed up to that #9 Ranked Total Defense and #1 ranked Rush Defense. Kansas scored 10 points in the first half but was shut out in the 2nd half, what is it that makes your defense play lock down Defense in the 2nd half?

Coach Era: We knew coming in that Kansas liked to throw the ball around with that QB they have. I think the first half they caught us off guard with some well designed plays but our staff made the adjustments at Halftime and the boys went out there and performed. It also doesn't hurt the cause when we had 2 Interceptions returned for TD's and a Forced Fumble with recovery. When the Defense can put points on the board its always a plus.

Reporter: Once again your Offense put some points on the board, 59 to be exact. Colt, was Colt but Johnson made his return from the dislocated knee. How big was that?

Coach Era: Well like you said, Colt had his typical day out there with his 4 TD's and big time throws when it counted. We rarely worry when Colt has command of the Offense and he's recognizing the Defense and making adjustments at the line. Look, I'm not taking anything from McGee but having Johnson back is a tremendous weight off our shoulders. Basically we can just feed him and that opens up the entire Offense. He had 151 yards and 2 TD's, enough said.

Reporter: With the last game of the regular season coming up, what are you looking for in this game against TAM?

Coach Era: I mean, basically we are just looking for more of the same, as cliche as that sounds. We know the importance of all our games from this point on and now we just have to execute.

    Longhorns finishes season undefeated

The Texas Longhorns played their annual rivalry game against TAM to close out the regular season and came away with a 44-27 victory. Texas started off the game very slow and sluggish against TAM, going down early in the first quarter with the air assault from TAM having some success early. Texas leaned on senior Quarterback, Colt McCoy for most of the day due to the obvious fact TAM wasn't going to allow Johnson to run wild. Colt also broke the Longhorn record for TD's in a season during this game, giving him 40 for the year. It is very possible McCoy will be the number one pick in the NFL draft if he can sustain this type of execution through the Conference Championship and Bowl Season. This win gave the Longhorns an undefeated record in the regular season being that they will have a bye in week 14 going into the Conference Championship Game. All indications have the Longhorns playing Kansas in the Championship Game. Kansas' only loss of the year so far came against the Longhorns in a very lopsided victory.

    Bring on the Jayhawks....

Texas Defeats Kansas in Big 12 Championship, 41-7

    McCoy 13/15 with 1 TD

This game started off in Texas' favor and it didn't change throughout. On Kansas' first possessions Reesing threw an Interception to Texas SS, Giedon, but only to have Giedon fumble the ball right back to Kansas. Even with a break like that Kansas' wasn't able to get anything going and was forced to punt. Texas was able to drive the ball down the field and score on a rushing TD by Johnson from 3 yards out. Texas would put another TD on the board in the first quarter giving them a 14-0 lead. The second quarter was pretty much a duplicate of the first with Texas stopping Kansas each time they had the ball. Kansas struggled early trying to the run ball, 17 attempts for 45 yards in the game, which is probably the reason they starting throwing the ball early in the game. Colt McCoy threw his only TD of the game in the second quarter when he found his favorite target of the year, TE Irby, off a playaction pass from the 2 yard line. Texas would end the first half ahead of Kansas, 28-0.

Kansas would find the endzone late in the third quarter for their only score of the game. The Texas defense would turnover Kansas' offense 5 times total, 3 interceptions and two fumbles. Texas pretty much controlled the game due to a heavy dose of the running game with 44 attempts for 144 yards and accounting for 4 TD's on the day. Another big stat in the game was 3rd down % with Kansas going 1-8 (12%) and Texas hitting on 6 out of 10 downs for 60%. Kansas only entered the redzone once on the day and wasn't able to pull any points from that when they were stuffed on 4th down when they tried a fake field goal. Texas on the other hand entered the redzone 6 times coming away with 5 touchdowns and 1 field goal giving them 100% Redzone conversion.

Next up for Texas, National Championship against 12-0, Penn St.

Texas dominated this game from start to finish on the way to their first BCS title under Coach Era. Penn St. never got their Heisman winning running back going and Texas was able to move the ball at will on Offense. McCoy finished his career at Texas with 45 touchdown passes, a school record. The dominate defense showed just why they were #1 ranked in rushing yards allowed. The Texas Longhorns finished the season with a 14-0 record which included a Big 12 Championship as well as a BCS title...Can anyone stop them and put an end to their undefeated record under Coach Era?

Congrats! That pass to Williams in the third was niiiiiiiiiiice. I hope I can make an impact this year. I must admit, the cpu recruiting for the Badgers is going to have me scrap'n this upcoming year. Still pumped like a ninja for it though :)
