    The Trojan Horse

    Season 3 team preview

THE TROJAN'S HOPE TO BE PLAYING FOR A NATIONAL TITLE IN 2011!

This is a well balanced team on offense and defense that is lead by upperclassman. Coach killajo has high hopes for this years team, saying that this might be the best defense in the country. With senior Jesse Armstead (97 rating) being moved to DT this team looks to be stout on the line. LE Malik Jackson returns for his senior season after recording 14 sacks in '10. The Lb's are led by MLB Chris Galippo (98 rating) a pre-season all-american. If the front 7 can get pressure the young secondary should be fine.

Offensively Coach Jo looks for Sr Aaron Corp (93 Rating) to take most of the snaps with RS SO Matt Barkley (93 Rating) sure to see action. As always USC has a great RB group led by Senior Marc Tyler (99 rating). The young group of tall fast WR will have to prove themselves, however the QB's can rely on the TE's. The big guys over the middle should have big seasons. The O=line is good but on the edges but might be suspect up the middle, time will tell.

    Outlook-
USC won't look past a week 1 game with Minnesota, but they are fully aware that the Oklahoma game may determine the outcome of their season.

I was looking at the USC roster last night and man, that is a solid group. I'm envious of your QB situation (two guys rated 93) and your TE group is SICK. Your secondary also looks really tough, with I believe two of the top 4 guys at CB having 95 speed.

With the running game and defense you are fielding it should be a tough time for the other PAC 10 teams (too bad Masoli graduated and won't get beaten on by them :D).

Yeah, it's a good team. I hope I don't get in the way. My db's are sick in man coverage. MRc Tyler is the key to the team, if he can rush 25 times a game I should be fine.

    OU 34 - USC 16
This one was an uphill battle right away as USC played the worst first 10 minutes in school history. Pick 6, offsides penaltys and other errors created a 21-0 deficit. A late rally of 10pts by USC to close the half kept fans from walking out. However OU shut down Marc Tyler making the Trojans one dimensional. "The killer was letting 1 WR be the opponents entire offense" said coach killajo. A ridiculous 158/195 yards receiving was by Broyels. Double teamed 75% of the game, it didn't matter that the Trojan's knew where the ball was going they couldn't stop it.

"After the horrible 21-0 start, the rest of the game we won 16-13, we'll build of that" said coach Jo after the game.

    Week 14
    USC 45 - UCLA 7

Once again USC takes the freeway to Pasadena and reminds the Bruins that they are a Basketball school. UCLA was dominated by the Trojan defense giving up 6 interceptions. The Trojans were far from prolific on Offense today but they were able to get 5 redzone TDs.
The most exciting part of the game was with 3:25 left in the fourth qtr, (doing my best Pete Caroll impersonation) Coach Killajo called for a fake FG that easily scored for the TD. The backups had already been in the game the entire qtr. "I don't usually call that sort of a play in that situation, but this is a rivalry and or Seniors want to go out having fun so I let 'em loose a lil' bit" Coach Killa said at the press conference.

    MVP - Marc Tyler 63yds 3td
    B. Baucham 4 tack 2 int 1 td.

I can only hope that the high ranked teams knock each other around so I can move up in the polls to get a BCS game. Because man the Holiday Bowl is a crappy way to end the season.

    TAMU 14 vs USC 55
    2011 Holiday Bowl
While the was not quite the bowl game that USC wanted to be playing in, there was no let down. The first string only played in the first half going up 38-14. The 2nd string pitched a 17-0 shutout themselves.
    Texas A & M was held to 2-12 (16%) on 3rd down and 0-4 on 4th down with 4 TO.

    A. Corp SR - 244yds 2 TD
    M. Tyler SR - 58yds 4 tds total

Coach Killajo ends his 1st season at USC with an 11-2 season going 1-2 in user games. As we usher in the Matt Barkley era (JR next season) this group looks forward to playing in National Championship or Rose Bowl game next season

    Receiving

    Kevin Jennings - 7 receptions, 99 yards, 1 TD

    Chris Randall - 6 receptions, 103 yards

    Devon Flourney - 6 receptions, 101 yards, 1 TD

    Defensive

    T.J. McDonald - 11 tackles (1 TFL), 1 Int (returned 40 yards for TD)

    Summary/Analysis

Matt Barkley led the Trojans to their first victory of the year, passing for just over 400 yards and 3 TDs. He did make several mistakes though, as he was picked off 4 times. Shannon Jones had a poor, but steady day on the ground with 65 yards and 2 TDs. Defensively TJ McDonald led USC with 11 tackles (1 TFL) and an INT returned for a TD. I tried to get a good feel for what the players can do, and pushed Barkley to throw passes I wouldn't usually make just to see if he could make them. Next week USC hits the road to battle Arizona and will not have another home game until week 11. This is gonna make recruiting very interesting.

    Summary/Analysis

This week the Trojans looked much better in their 2nd week under Coach Hippo. The offense was much more balanced and Matt Barkley played within his limits. The ground game looked much better as Jones racked up impressive yardage. A big blow came in the 2nd quarter, Chris Randall was injured with a strained shoulder and will sit out for 3 weeks. The defense played well, holding Arizona to 30 rushing yards and forced 1 fumble and 3 Interceptions. Next week the Trojans will travel to South Bend to take on Notre Dame and Coach Twist. There is a little history between the two coaches, and USC will be ready to play this one.

    Summary/Analysis

We had all kinds of trouble connecting to get this game in. Finally, we got it to work after probably 2 total hours of trying, but man was it worth it. This was an awesome game and anytime Twist and I play it ends up being really close.

As for the ending, USC was trailing 24-27 with about 3:30 left in the 4th. I mount a drive and get deep into ND territory. Notre Dame has two solid stops and now USC is facing a 3rd and 13 from the 19 yard line. It's looking like USC will likely have to kick a FG and tie the game until Barkley connects with Flournoy on a post route to give USC a 1st and goal. From there USC punches it in for the TD with just over a minute to go. Notre Dame moves the ball well in their last drive, but an interception by USC seals the victory. Great game as always Twist. I felt pretty lucky to come out of this game with a victory, the key I think was holding Riddick to 47 yards and only 1 TD on 17 carries.

    Defensive

    Patrick Hall - 2 Ints, 1 returned 85 yards for a TD

    Summary/Analysis

Matt Barkley led the Trojans to an easy victory over Stanford with a 385 yard, 4 TD performance. The Trojans put up 24 points in each of the 1st two quarters before allowing the 2nd stringers to play out the 2nd half. There were 2 main downfalls for Stanford: pass coverage and punting. USC receivers seemed to get huge seperation from the Stanford defensive backs and made several big plays. Also, Stanford's punter was REALLY bad...7 punts with a 27.9 average. Most of the time I would get the ball around mid-field or even in Stanford territory.

Much of the 2nd half was taken up by experimenting with running from the shotgun, so the yardage wasn't great, but I did make some progress on the ever difficult task.

USC is over .500 for the 1st time all year.

    Kevin Jennings - 4 receptions, 43 yards, 2 TD

    Summary/Analysis

Possibly the most overmatched, pathetic team I have played in a long time. WSU blitzed at the worst possible times and their defensive backs were slow and couldn't even keep up with the USC receivers. I couldn't count on both of my hands how many times they called "Engage Eight", often times on 1st down...Still, I only threw 1 pass in the 2nd half and all my points in the 2nd half (9) came from FGs inside the 5 yard line I kicked on 1st or 2nd downs...WSU was absolutely worthless. Barkley had a career day because of WSU's on-field brilliance, as he is now flourishing in the Hippo spread passing attack.

    Summary/Analysis

This game pissed me off and the score paints a much prettier picture than what really took place. Barkley was effective but made several mistakes as he was 25/38 for 361 yards, 2 TDs and 4 Ints. That makes his season total 22 TDs and 21 Ints. With 3 games left, I'm just hoping for a 30/24 total. Melvin Campbell led the Trojan receivers with 10 catches for 145 yards, and John Stephens added 91 yards on 6 catches and 2 TDs. On defense, DE Kennard had 3 sacks, as he constantly applied good pressure on the ASU QB. The run defense has been fucking incredible, allowing 15 rushing yards in the last 3 games combined.

I'll take the win, as I don't feel like USC has a lot to prove the rest of the year. Hopefully I can get some good playing time for the younger guys so I can reload for next year.

    Devon Flourney - 3 receptions, 56 yards

    Summary/Analysis

Another close one for USC . Matt Barkley went down early in the 1st quarter and would not return, but backup QB Marvin Love stepped up. Love was 11/13 passing for 219 yards and 2 TDs and also ran 10 times for 75 yards and 1 TD. Shannon Jones ran the ball well for the Trojans, leading the spread option rushing attack with 119 yards on 18 carries and 3 TDs. Melvin Campbell led all receivers with 4 catches for 111 yards and a TD, most of those yards coming on a Oregon St all out blitz where Campbell only had to beat the safety to take it the distance.

Defensively, the Trojans were dominant once again. A forced fumble and a scoop and score on the opening kickoff started the game out on the right foot. The defense limited Oregon St to only 28 yards on the ground on 24 carries and the secondary caused problems all day for the QB as he was a terrible 11/27 passing.

This was a fun game to play because I feel like I am starting to run the ball pretty well out of the shotgun, something I haven't had much success with in the past.

    Summary/Analysis

This was a great rivalry game and the first time I have really been "challenged" by the CPU all year. The score at the half was 38-27 and Cal was tied or within 1 score for most of the 1st half. Neither team played any defense as the teams combined for 1,046 yards of total offense. With only 1 game left and the #8 rank in the BCS, USC is looking forward to a potential at-large bid into a BCS game.

    Summary/Analysis

The Trojans managed to defeat the Buckeyes at home 38-25. Offensively, the Trojans didn't put up great numbers, but they also didn't commit any turnovers. Marvin Love managed the game well and didn't force any bad passes. It was a rushing attack by committee, as both the starting HB, Shannon Jones, and back up HB, Micah Reid, were injured for portions of the game. Jones ran for 73 yards on 21 carries and scored 3 times while Reid carried the ball 8 times for 42 yards and a score. Defensively, FS Gerald Johnson and MLB Cory Lewis both had 11 tackles to lead the Trojans. The D played pretty well, holding T.J. Perry to under 100 yards and only 1 TD.

There were two key plays to the game. The first came early in the 2nd quarter. USC was leading 14-7 after a touchdown closed out the first quarter. MLB Cory Lewis picked off a Leonard Jackson pass over the middle, quickly shifting the momentum to USC. This turnover allowed the Trojans to start deep in OSU territory, and they took advantage by scoring a touchdown and pushing the lead to 21-7.

The real dagger came in the 3rd quarter. OSU kicked a field goal to make the score USC 28 - OSU 17. The Buckeyes then forced USC to punt after the Trojan's drive stalled. On the 1st play of their drive, OSU ran a dive play, but their HB accidently pitched the ball directly to a USC linebacker. This killed the momentum for OSU, as USC scored a touchdown after the turnover to take a 35-17 lead.

This is a great start for USC, as they started slow out of the gates last year, but there is no time to celebrate this win. The Florida Gators are coming into town fresh off a victory over those cocaine-snorting Miami Hurricanes.

    Summary/Analysis

It was a back and forth game. USC managed to force Florida to punt their first 2 possessions and was able to build a quick lead. A long field goal by USC at the end of the first half made it USC 27 - Florida 17. Both teams only managed a field goal in the 3rd quarter. Then all hell broke loose.

Florida scored a touchdown, making the score USC 30 - Florida 27. On the ensuing possession, USC QB Marvin Love forced a throw into double coverage that was picked off. Florida took advantage of the turnover, scoring a TD and taking their first lead of the game, Florida 34 - USC 30. USC answered on a long drive, scoring on a Shannon Jones run, USC 37 - Florida 34.

With approx. 3 minutes Florida got the ball back with a chance to take the lead. The Gators chucked the ball all over the field, as they did all day long, and scored on a fly route by the slot receiver, Florida 41 - USC 37. USC now had a 1 minute 30 seconds to try to score. After an incomplete pass and a sack, Marvin Love called his offense to the line and quickly audibled to a different pass play. WR Bruce Bell ran a 10 yard in route and WR Kyle Silva ran a post. Love threw the ball deep over the middle to Silva, who somehow came down with the ball and didn't have a single man to beat on his way to the endzone.

Florida only had approx. 20 seconds to try to get into field goal range, but they couldn't make it happen. A final hail mary pass was broken up and the Trojans somehow manage to hang on to defeat the Gators, 44-41. This was an extremely exciting game and there were so many ups and downs throughout the game. Brave played really well and I would say he easily outplayed me, I just got lucky one more time than he did.

Videos, all from the 4th quarter:

Yeah that 70 yard TD still makes me sick to my stomach. I should have made that play but no one to blame but myself. I over ran the play and my player decided he didn't feel like jumping.

    Summary/Analysis

The top ranked Trojans started out their conference games on the right foot, shutting out the Huskies 48-0. Marvin Love led USC to victory on a 15/16 passing day for 320 yards and 4TDs. Shannon Jones added 100 yards and 1TD on the ground on 25 carries. Bruce Bell had 103 yards and 2TDs on 6 catches, while TE Kevin Jennings put up 125 yards and 1TD on 4 catches, including a career long 86 yard TD catch.

Defensively the Trojans played extremely well, giving up only 190 yards of offense and 6 first downs all game. True Freshman DE Richmond Wall had 4 tackles (2TFL), 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble.

I ran the ball every play except for maybe 3 in the 2nd half. I wanted to run the ball more in the 1st half, but Washington constantly loaded the box and brought pressure with 7+ guys most the time. I took what they game me, and what they gave me was wide open receivers all day long. It's hard trying to justify running the ball against stupid blitzes like that in the 2nd half, but I still was able to move the ball decently well on the ground.

Next week USC will travel to rival Cal.
