Clemson, SC-- Coach Knight wanted to get off on the right foot and he had Virginia looking like a dominating ACC team that hadnt lost a game when they stepped on the field vs Clemson. Mikell Simpson ran through and around the Tiger defense with 30 carries producing 240 yards and 2 tds. Coach Knight also went with Sewell at QB but only threw 17 times completing six for 110 and 1 td. Virginia's defense held Spiller in check for the game as he got 101 yards on his last carry in garbage time on 30 rushes and fumbling twice. Korn threw the ball 32 times completing 21 of them, for 200 yards with 1 td and 1 pick. Virginia's defense was led by Cook and Mosley with 14 and 13 tackles each, Mosley also led off the scoring with a pick 6. Clemson's defense was led by Chambers with 13 tackles. Clemson scored on a blown coverage where the safety (pushed Y and no pick) didnt pick it off, but Clemson had three redzone attempts, with 2 missed field goals both 20- yards and a pick 6. Coach Knight and Virginia host #5 Virginia Tech in the annual rivalry game next week.

    Coach Knight
"I am very pleased with the team's effort today and we look to improve next week against Va Tech. I loved how our defense performed today and held Spiller to a minimal game. Next week I hope to send out these seniors with a win and against a top 10 team."

Cavs have chance for ACC Championship Game

ACC-- The standings right now have Virginia Tech at 8-2 with a conference record of 5-1. Virginia has a record of 6-4 and 4-2 conference record. Looking at Week 12s results, Va Tech lost to NC State and will drop them to 8-3 (5-2) while Virginia beat Clemson and improves to 7-4 (5-2). Va Tech holds a slim lead in the conference and win percentage at .720 while Virginia is at .630. A win for Virginia next week should place them in the ACCCG, both teams will have identical records and UVA will hold tiebreaker.

    Virginia vs Va Tech

    Cavs slash Hokies
    [IMG]

Charlottesville, VA-- Virginia's seniors were ready to finally win against Tech, something that hasn't been done since 2003. The opening kickoff set the tone as Lillard returned it 95 yards for the score and the Cavs never looked back in the snowy conditions. Jameel Sewell went out on a high note in his final regular season game as he completed 9 of 19 for 179 yards with a TD, he also rushed 6 times for 24 yards and a TD. His only miscue was an interception when he was hit and forced a duck throw. Mikell Simpson had a career day by school standards and NCAA standards as he rushed 28 times for 308 yards, a whopping 11.0 yard average with 5 touchdowns. The defense came to play also with five players registering 8+ tackles with the leader at 11. The team had 5 sacks, 1 int, and 1 fumble recovery.

    Coach Knight
"I really feel like our kids are starting to come on right now, especially only two weeks in on my command and playbook. I wanted to make a statement that Virginia is back and ready to take back over the state. I have to give it to Mikell and the Oline, three-hundred and eight yards is unbelievable and against a good defense year in year out. I believe the win got us a chance to play for an ACC championship, something I didnt expect this year but we will take it. What I know is that NC State will win the Atlantic and that will be our opponent but we will find out more in the next few days or so. Thank you and I have a team to go celebrate with!"

"Wow, I cant believe these kids did it. Jameel and Mikell are a hell of a tandum, I have one more game to coach them for three games. I believe I have gotten to know these players real fast and they have responded well. I didnt really expect to win an ACC Title when I took the job, not this year at least and not even an apperance into the game. With that being said, we got here and I had no thoughts of losing the game. We looked at stats on NC State and saw they werent really challenged all year except for a few games so we knew it was goin to be tough and them being well prepared. We are just goin to go celebrate this win and then find out who our Orange Bowl opponent will be in the next few days. thanks"

Miami, Fl-- Auburn's spread offense looked good from the opening snap until halftime. Kodi Burns led Auburn to an opening score, hitting Winter on an 18 yard TD pass. Virginia's offense got of to a hot start scoring 21 unanswered points, Mikell Simpson led off scoring on a 49 yard run. Jameel Sewell would then throw three straight on the drive to Simpson, the last being a 8 yard TD pass. Sewell would then hit Jobe on a 19 yard TD pass, putting the score at 21-7 going into the 2nd quarter.

Auburn would then score at the start of the 2nd quarter cutting the lead to 21-13 after missing XP. Virginia would then score another 21 unanswered points, a Simpson 4 yard run, Sewell 4 yard pass and a Simpson 58 yard run. Auburn would then score right before half on a Burns 4 yard pass to McKenzie, putting the score at 42-20.

The rest of the game would consist of defense and only 2 scores both from Virginia, a 13 yard TD pass Sewell to Torchia and another 10 yard pass, Sewell to Brown. Simpson would continue to dominate on the ground racking up over 300 yards.

Virginia will miss these seniors, especially Sewell and Simpson but they have a Freshman quarterback that had a lot of playing time early in the year and a running back that had some carries. Defense should continue to get better also.

"Wheeww, I am really enjoying this right now. I think this game showcased how good Mikell is. Jameel didnt miss a pass until he got one knocked down at the line and then just threw two more bad balls. Our team showed and went thorugh a lot this year and this victory gives them what they have worked for so hard. Im still saying I dont know how we got here but we will take it and give it all we have. All I will say for now, as I am goin to go celebrate with my team, I will give you another session tomorrow. thank you and GO CAVS!"

Cavs look to replace key players

2009 Class and look to 2010

Virginia looks to replace CB Vic Hall, QB Jemell Sewell and RB Mikell Simpson. Cavs ended up with a recruiting class that ranked 31 with 18 recruits (over the limit by computer recruiting). We were able to pull in four 4 stars, eight 3 stars and six 2 stars. FS, Kennedy headlines the class along with mostly defensive recruits. 11/18 players play defense. Some players will be able to play right away and we may not redshirt anyone, it depends.

    Coach Knight
"I like our first year class, we loaded up on defense. Defense wins championships, I think we have some players already on our roster that will replace Jameel and Mikell. I look forward to next year and defending our ACC crown."

    Cavs slay Mountaineers

Morgantown, WV-- Both teams came into the game to see who would step up and take control of key positions. West Virginia started the E. Smith era after Jarrett Brown and Pat White have both graduated. Smith did well, as he went 18-23 for 198 yards with a td and pick. WV's Noel Devine wanted his senior year to start out right but Virginia's defense, what is believed to be the strength of the team, spoiled his chances. He was able to rush 12 times for 114 yards and a td, but take away his 70 yard td run and he was held to a measly 44 yards.
Virginia had some experience coming back on the offensive side of the ball and Riko Smalls and Torrey Mack may have put light on the shadows of Sewell and Simpson. Mack, not as fast as Simpson, rushed for 119 yards on 25 carries with 4 TDs. Virginia may also have a thunder and lighting combo, Keith Payne-thunder and Mack- lightning. Payne comes in at 6'3'' 236 and able to pound the ball. Smalls completed 10 of 16 passes for 185 yards with a td and pick. Defense played very well today, Freshman Safety Brian Edwards collected 9 tackles, 1 FF in his first game, Safety Adam Kennedy collected 6 tackles, 1TFL, and Ross McNair had 8 stops 5 for a loss and 3 sacks.

    Cavs force Duke into turnovers

Durham, NC-- The Cavaliers coming off a impressive win against West Virginia didnt let up against the rebuilding Blue Devils. The Cavs defense forced Duke into turnovers early but couldnt capitalize on several of them. Virginia would have taken a 13-0 lead into half, but Smalls threw a interception trying to hit Mack over the middle and the Duke defender scored with 0:05 left on the clock. Duke pooch kicked and Cav player called for a fair catch. Smalls came out in a Spread set, hot routing his left slot receiver into blocking the end and his left outside receiver on a fly. Ball snapped, Smalls shuffled to the right and when he got the left side of the line sealed he moved to the open part of the field and uncorked it for Inman, ball was thrown to the 1 yard line and caught for a TD, Cavs take 20-7 lead into half.
Virginia would connect on a 41 yard field goal by Hinkebein and Duke's Qb would run it in for the score making it, 23-14 in the Cavs favor. Torrey Mack would end up scoring the last points of the day on a 1 yard TD run and rushing for another 100+ yards for second straight game. Freshman Adam Kennedy and Dwight Hall play exceptionally well again for the defense as Kennedy collected 10 tackles and 2 forced fumbles, while Hall collected 9 tackles and 1 for loss.

    Coach Knight
"Im pleased with the game, but I feel like we could have play a whole lot better. We could have capitalized on the turnovers and probably opened up better holes for our running game, but I give Coach J at Duke some credit. He avoided a major blow out with 7 turnovers and I think we failed at not putting up points, but I liked how our D played at causing those turnovers. Riko made 1 mistake throwing right at the Duke defender tryin to get it to Mack, but he made it up with the play right before the half ended. We have to continue to get better and we have a visit from the Razorbacks and I would like our players to make a statement in that game versus a good SEC team."

Charlottesville, Va-- The Razorbacks of Arkansas came into Virginia at 2-0 and ranked 20th in the nation while the Cavs sat at 2-0 13th in the nation. The rankings didnt really matter because the game was very good. After Arkansas forced a pick 6 off of press coverage the Cavs scored 21 unanswered points to lead 21-7 before Arkansas would score to go into halftime down 21-14.
Arkansas received the ball to open the second half and UVA's defense could not get them off the field as they had plenty of chances to force a punt and field goal but the Hogs were determined to tie the game and they did. Virginia would answer back with a long drive, majority using the passing game and then Torrey Mack running it in from the 2 yard line to put Virginia back up 7, 28-21. Arkansas would settle for a field goal on their next posession and Virginia went to work to put the game out of reach. After a nice run, but a penalty on the play forced Virginia to a 1st and 14. The next play they setup a screen pass and Inman took it 87 yards for a TD making a beautiful spin move on the defender, 35-24. Virginia would then intercept Mallet and then run the clock down and eventually have 4th down and kicked a 49 yard field goal for a 38-24 win.

Charlottesville, Va-- What started out to be a good game turned into a nightmare for the Terrapins. Virginia scored the first ten points of the game then Maryland scored on a 11 yard Td pass. Then Virginia would score 38 unanswered points through all phases of the game, offense, defense and special teams. Smalls threw for 1 Td and rushed for a Td and Keith Payne (thunder) put one in the endzone. Kris Burd ran back a 91 yard kickoff and defense scored off of two fumbles by Maryland's punt returner. Chase Minnifield, CB, left the game early and will miss 2 weeks after being named defensive player of the game last week. Virginia keeps improving and the freshmen keep playing well on defense as Edwards and Kennedy both racked up 12 tackles and Detrick picked up 8. Also, had some surprise recruits come visit Virginia over the weekend and we hope they had a good time.

    Coach Knight
"I am pleased about the game and excited that our freshmen keep on playing awesome. We lost Chase for about 2 weeks so we hope another corner will step up in place for him. Riko played real well and our backs ran pretty well for the touches they got. Special teams played the best since I have been here. I know we had a few recruits here at the game today and I hope they came away impressed. Thanks we gotta get ready to go to ND in 2 weeks."

South Bend, IN-- Virginia came in number 6 and ND ranked 8th, while Virginia played like a top 10 team Notre Dame didnt. The Fighting Irish didnt put up much of a fight. UVA defense stifled Notre Dame and the offense played real well. Smalls went 7-11 139 yards and a TD, while the rushing attack was led by Mack's 109 yards and 2 Tds. Detrick led Virginia's defense with 9 tackles and a TD. Virginia travels to UNC next week.

Charlottesville, Va-- Virginia cam out like a number 3 team, but as the game went into the 4th quarter they were complacent. UNC was able to score 21 points in the fourth quarter and get the game within 7 points before Virginia finished it off at 10. Torrey Mack went out with a torn pectoral and will miss 11 weeks, but that didnt stop Keith Payne to rack up yards as he rushed 17 times for 135 yards. Riko Smalls probably had his worst game of the season as he completed 12 of 26 for 222 yards with 2 TDs and 2 Ints. Defense was led by Freshman Brian Edwards with 19 tackles, 4 for loss, 1 forced fumble, and 1 recovery. UVA has a bye week then meets BC and Coach Tx.

Virginia wins, but loses Smalls for season

Chestnut Hill, Ma-- The game started off well as BC first possession ended up being a turnover. On Virginia's first play Riko Smalls hits Staton Jobe for a 46 yard TD pass. Freshman tandem Edwards and Kennedy in the secondary forced a fumble and returned it for a TD. Keith Payne (thunder) ran exceptionally well this game filling in for Mack (8 weeks). As the game went on it was all UVA, but BC did manage to score twice in the 3rd quarter. Virginia will have to implement a new game plan in the coming weeks as they try to finish out the ACC as their next 3 games are on the road then finish with Miami and a hot Vandy team at home.

    Coach Knight
"I was very pleased with the rushing game and with our defensive play. I am bummed out hearing that Riko will be out for the rest of the year, we will have to rely on our D and rushing game a little more."

Sucks to lose your QB. Although from watching your team I think you'll still be dominant without him. Good luck.

Cavs take Jackets to woodshed, without Smalls

Atlanta, Ga-- Riko Smalls declared unable to go and out for the season didnt slow down Virginia for the time being. The Cavs didnt take long to score as they scored on GTs first offensive possession causing a fumble and then returning it for the score. Virginia would look back as they scored 14 unanswered points and then GT would kick a field goal, 14-3. Virginia would then score another TD and GT would score a TD going into half 21-10.
The second half would be all Virginia as they would score 27 points to GTs 0. Virginia would split time between QBs and Verica received most of the passing attempts going 11-21 for 161 yards while Metheny wen 7-10 for 127 yards. Keith Payne continued his rushing dominance posting 28 attempts for 174 yards. Fresh Brian Edwards and Adam Kennedy keep showing how good the back end of the secondary will be for a few years to come. Virginia travels to rival Virginia Tech next week as they take on the 23rd ranked Hokies.
