    Honda theme puzzle.

    You have:
    • 1,000 Honda Accords parked in a row in a parking lot.
    • 1,000 Honda Associates in a line in the same parking lot.
    The President of Honda asks:
    • The first associate to open the hood of every car.
    • The second associate to go to every second car and close the hood.
    • The third associate to go to every third car and, if the hood is closed, open it, and if it is open, close it.
    • The fourth associate to do the same to every fourth car.
This continues until every associate has participated. Each associate must wait until the associate in front of him is finished before he starts.

After the process is completed with the thousandth associate, how many cars have open hoods?

First person with the correct answer selects tomorrow nights team, if no one gets the answer, I choose.

If you have an answer, I would like to see how you came to the answer.

I think I have this one figured out.

All the cars where that car number has a number that can be squared are open. All others would get closed. On a number that has a perfect square, they would be touched by an odd number of people. For example.

Car 9 has person 1 open it, 3 close it, and 9 open it.

Car 10 has person 1 open, 2 close, 5 open, and 10 close.

This would work for any car in the lineup. That being said, we will have 31 cars with perfect squares.

So.....the answer to the question is 31 cars. 31 cars would have the hood open.

It's all the primes from 1-1000, because they all have an odd number of factors.

Any even number of factors is going to result with the hood closed - eliminating all primes (numbers with factors of 1 and the number itself) and all composite non-squares.

Square numbers have a double factor (i.e. 3x3=9 - so 3 would be a double factor) which allow for the hoods to be left open.

    All the primes from 0-1000:
    1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121, 144, 169, 196, 225, 256, 289, 324, 361, 400, 441, 484, 529, 576, 625, 676, 729, 784, 841, 900, 961

Total number of primes from 0-1000: 31

The cars that are the perfect squares have an odd number of factors, so an odd number of employees touched em... so since they started closed... if an odd number of employees touched it, it's going to end up open.

    AKA the locker problem.
