    Bearcats 1-0

The Cincy Bearcats traveled to take on Rutgers and came home with a victory. The Bearcats were led by Sr QB Tony Pike who was the player of the game. He torched the Rutgers defense when given time, unfortunately, the O-line needs some work as Pike was sacked 8 times.

The Cincy team has a lot of growing to do this year as they are young on defense and will need some young guys to step up. They got their first taste of action this weekend, but tougher tests are ahead. Hopefully they learn quickly.

    Players of the Game:
    Game Ball QB T. Pike 243.8 rating, 22/25, 346 yds 3 TDs
Sr WR Mardy Gilyard 11 rec, 175 yds, TD

    Notable youngsters:
FR SS D. Frey 7 tackles
SO DT J. Hughes 7 tackles, 5 TFL, 3 sacks

    Upset City!!!

Cincinnati hosted the #16 Cal GoldenBears this weekend.

Cal brought to town a great offense with QB Kevin Riley and All American HB Jahvid Best. This was a great game from the start. Cal took the opening kickoff and drove the length of the field for a TD.

The Bearcats responded when freshman return man Lynell Payne took the opening kickoff 102 yards to the house.

The game went back and forth and then got really interesting in the 4th quarter. With Cal ahead by 5, Cincy had to convert numerous 3rd and longs to keep their drive alive for the go ahead TD. Sr. WR Mardy Gilyard came up with a couple huge plays in one on one coverage to help his team. After scoring a TD to go ahead by 2 with 3 minutes remaining, Cal got the ball and marched down field. The Bearcats were finally able to get some pressure on Skinner and forced a punt from midfield.

The Bearcats were unable to convert a first down and punted the ball back. The defense responded when called upon forcing a turnover on downs. The Bearcats were able to run the clock down to 10 seconds left before kicking a field goal to go up 5. Thankfully they covered the ensuing kickoff and that was all she wrote for this one.

Mike Leach gets his first win as the OC at Cincinnati.

"Now that's a playbook!!!" -QB Tony Pike after game

    Players of the Game:
    Game Ball QB T. Pike 159.1 rating, 21/34, 300 yds 3 TDs

    Cal QB K. Riley 148.9, 24/33, 221 yds, 2 TDs
HB J. Best 13 car, 58 yds, rec, 20 yds

    Notable youngsters:
FR SS D. Frey 6 tackles
SO DT J. Hughes 5 tackles, TFL, sack
FR WR Lynell Payne 4 returns 192 yds, TD

    Bearcats Upend Buckeyes!!!

There's a new king in Ohio this year as the Cincinnati Bearcats have claimed rights to the state knocking off #6 tOSU in the Horseshoe.

The Bearcats were in trouble early as their defense couldn't contain the Buckeye passing game. Terrelle Pryor was able to pick the secondary apart as there was no pass rush at all generated by the Bearcats front. Thankfully the Bearcats were able to make some corrections later in the game to contain the high powered Buckeye offense.

On the other side of the ball, Cincy did as Cincy does. They sustained drive after drive against a stout Buckeyes defense that they made look outmanned at times. Sr QB Tony Pike was in and out of the game with nagging injuries and finally in the 3rd quarter he was knocked out of the game for good when he tweaked his hamstring. He shouldn't miss much time as they expect him back next week. He finished 13/19 for 241 yds and a TD. His replacement, Sophomore Zach Collaros proved worthy to the challenge as he stepped in going 4/6 for 90 yards and a TD. He also showed a little change of pace to the Bearcats offense as Collaros is also a runner. I don't think the Buckeyes were ready for an athletic QB. Collaros carried 7 times for 43 yards and a score.

The man of the day was SR. WR Mardy Gilyard, and boy did he have himself a day. He toyed with the Buckeye secondary at times as they were unable to keep an eye on him. "They don't want none a us! This is my state!!!" Gilyard was quoted as saying after the game. He finished with 8 receptions for 227 yards and 2 TDs. He even added a rushing TD when on the goalline, OC Mike Leach subbed him into HB to run a sweep when both HB's were exhausted.

    Players of the Game:
Game Ball WR. M. Gilyard 8 rec, 227 yds, 2 TDs, car, 5 yds, TD

OSU WR D. Posey, 5 rec, 196 yds, TD

    Notable youngsters:
FR SS D. Frey 4 tackles, tfl, 2 INTs
SO OLB JK Schaffer, 7 tkls, tfl
    SO HB I. Pead, 11 car, 40 yds, 5 rec, 45 yds

Here's some of the day's highlights:
Frey's 2nd pick to seal the game. Talk about throwing into quadruple coverage.

Look at the big DE showing his hands and athleticism. Thankfully my HB ran him down. That would have been disaster.

    EA Sports is a Laughingstock!

The Bearcats win what was the most unfun game ever. I think I would have rather peeled onions than played this game. The Ohio QB Boo Jackson gets the game ball as he has the most remarkable passing day ever, 35/43, 409 yds, and 3 TDs. The Cincy D couldn't get any pressure on him. If they blitzed, he hit the hot route. If they played zone, he sat in the pocket and ate his lunch until someone came open. What a joke of a game.

I really wish I still had my old playstation because I'd rather go back and play NCAA 98, at least that game was fun.

Backbreaker comes out this spring, it's a new football game with an entirely new engine. I'm thinking I might actually buy it to replace this piece!

    Anyways, here's the stats:
    Players of the Game:
Game Ball QB BOO Jackson 184.3 rating, 35/43, 409 yds, 3 TDs

    Notable youngsters:
FR SS D. Frey 7 tackles
SO OLB JK Schaffer, 5 tkls, 2 tfl, sack

    Bearcats Win Slopfest!!!

The Bearcats got a small scare today from visiting Kent. It poured down heavy rains the entire game and caused chaos for the Bearcats "Air Raid". However, the Bearcats were able to muster a win. Led by JR HB John Goebel's 3 TDs on a season high 27 carries, the Bearcats were able to overpower the inferior Kent team.

SR Tony Pike had a rough day throwing 2 INTs and only one TD. He added 6 carries for 27 yards though as the Kent D tried to cover all the Cincy WRs. SR WR Mardy Gilyard had another strong performance hauling in 7 balls for 127 yds and a score.

"This is the first time we have ran the ball more than we threw it, 39/26. That's pretty rare for us, but it was great seeing Goebel step up and carry us considering the weather today. I'm really proud of his and the offensive lines performance." - Coach KSherm

The Bearcats are on a bye next week but are excited to see the results of this weekends big recruiting weekend. There were quite a few prospects in attendance for this game and hopefully we'll get some commits. We'll also begin preparing for our big east showdown with USF. Having the extra week to prepare for their triple option attack should be a big bonus.

    Players of the Game:
Game Ball HB J Goebel, 28 car, 104 yds, 3 TDs, 2 rec, 3 yds

    Notable youngsters:
FR SS D. Frey 8 tackles, tfl

    Bearcats Win!!!

Cincy bounces back from their bad loss last week to USF to knock off the Cardinals at home in Big East play.

The Cardinals gave it their all (with plenty of help from crappy programming from EA) but came up short in the long run. Cincy QB Tony Pike had a huge day throwing for 450+ yards and 4 TDs. He also threw 3 INT's that were absolutely silly. One was an option route where the WR should of ran a curl and he was wide open, instead he ran an out right into coverage and the ball was picked. The other was a horrible over throw on a double move to Gilyard and the other was a ball that was completed to the WR who then got hit sticked by the defense and the CB caught the ball as it dropped out of the WRs hands.

Louisville HB Victor Anderson had a huge day going for 154 yds on 17 carries. The Cardinals offensive line also had a field day as they racked up 25 pancakes on the day.

Perhaps we should tune the CPU blocking down a bit???

LMAO! 1st play of the game. I called 3-4 man cover 2. They ran a dive play. I think they got 8 of their 25 pancakes on this play.

    SU 21

    Bearcats Win!!!

Boy are the Bearcats excited to have slot WR DJ Wood back from injury. The sophomore couldn't be covered as he torched the SU secondary catching 10 balls for 244 yds and a TD while almost eclipsing the Cincy record book.

The game started out ugly as SU jumped out to a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Bearcats gave up big plays and a bad pass by Tony Pike that was returned for a TD were the Bearcats achilles heel.

Thankfully, the Bearcats responded in the second quarter as they went into halftime up 27-21 as they missed an extra point wide left.

The Bearcats controlled the 2nd half sustaining drives and keeping the SU offense on the sideline.

    Tony Pike 211 rating, 22/32, 451 yds, 3 TDs
    G. Paulus 182 rating, 20/28, 356 yds TD

    Notable Youngsters
So DE D. Wolfe 8 tackles, 2 tfl, sack
So WR DJ Woods see above

    Bearcats End Skid

Cincy wins a closer one than they expected. Led by QB Juice Williams' 5 TD passes, the Illini made this a game. The Bearcats had the answer however with SR WR Mardy Gilyard having a career day as he broke the single season school record for receptions with 68. QB Tony Pike struggled at times, but he came through when it counted to get the Bearcats off their losing streak and back to their winning ways.

    Player of the game:
    WR M. Gilyard, 9 rec, 172 yds, 3 TDs

Bearcats Win Motor City Bowl to Cap Season of Unmet Expectations

The Bearcats pounded an untalented and remarkable 8-4 Buffalo team. SR QB Tony Pike had a fun day as the Buffs were outmanned trying to cover the Bearcat WRs.

This caps the 09 season for the Bearcats which will be thought of what could of been. The Bearcats had high hopes this season and not making it to 10 wins really hurts. They'll look to rebuild this off season and get their defense together to hopefully be a contender in the Big East next season.

It's been fun calling plays for Gilyard and Pike all season long and it won't be the same without them around next year. Thankfully we'll have USC transfered WR Hazelton to make plays for us next year.

That's all for now, see you guys in the offseason.

    Players of the Game:
    Game Ball QB T. Pike 218.4, 20/28, 333 yds, 4 TDs
