The 0-2 Rebels decide to hire a new coach after falling 17-34 to the Beavers

After losing to Fresno State and Oregon State to start off the 2009 campaign, UNLV Head Coach Mike Sanford has been fired. Sanford was in his fifth year with the Rebels. He compiled an 11-38 record in his tenure, including an abysmall 5-27 record against MWC opponents.

After four straight two-win seasons, Sanford lead the Rebels to a 5-7 record in 2008. It looked like things were starting to turn around, but with lousy showings against Fresno State and Oregon State the UNLV AD decided to head in a new direction. It is still unknown who will replace Sanford. We contacted UNLV for a story on the new coach and they left us with a one word answer. "Balls."

What could the UNLV braintrust possibly mean by "Balls"? Nobody is sure. We are, however, sure about one thing. Rebel fans are enticed and excited to see what this new coach can do. "Balls" will be leading his 0-2 Rebels against another winless team, the Toledo Rockets (0-2). The game will be played September 19th at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This has been your quick fix from Rebel Report. Stay tuned!

    Change is a Good Thing
Whenever you run into someone from your past, you never want to hear that phrase. "Man, you haven't changed a bit!" It means you're boring, bland, and lazy. That phrase cannot be applied to UNLV. Amongst major changes at the Head Coach position and offensive philosophy the Rebels were able to fend off the Rockets 28-16. The win gives UNLV their first victory of the year. Ex-Coach Mike Sanford represented the boring, bland, and lazy guy. Heck, he only won two games four years in a row. "Balls" represents the new cool guy with the 60" Plasma HDTV down the street and a Ford F-150 in the driveway towing the boat that ALSO has a HDTV.

I digress. Star quarterback Omar Clayton led the Rebels to victory. Clayton completed 15 through the air for 165 yards and two touchdowns in the game. He also added 73 yards on the ground with an additional touchdown. Omar would end up throwing three interceptions, but UNLV won anyways. So... Who cares, right? Cox gave the Rebels consistency on the ground averaging 3.3 yards a carry claiming 61 yards. The offensive line was VERY happy to see some sort of rushing attack. They were tired of dropping back every play to block while the Rebels aired it out 42 times. Omar kept the receivers happy throwing it 24 times and spreading it out to seven different players. UNLV showed they are a threat to go 200/200 every game on offense. They compiled 320 yards of offense, 155 coming on the ground.

Pic of the Game: Wolfe celebrates after TD catch

UNLV had one of the worst ranking defenses in the country going into the game. They had given up 373 rushing yards (#117) and 518 passing yards (#97) in two games, ranking them 108th in Total Defense. Luckily for them, they happened to be going up against an offense ranked 80th. The Rockets could only muster 177 yards of offense against the Rebels defense. Opelt was picked off twice by Pointer and Beauchamp. Six of Toledo's points came off of a defensive touchdown, meaning the offense only earned nine points in the game. They managed to get it into the endzone in the 3rd Quarter (Opelt 4Yd pass to Fought) but that was the only time of celebration. UNLV's defensive gameplan was simple: Play them at the line, face-to-face.

Play of the Game: D. Quinn, returned interception 50 Yds

Change is great. Maybe we'll get to ask this "Balls" character some questions before UNLV's next game at Wyoming. We definitely have a lot of questions. This has been Rebel Report. Stay tuned for another episode of Dancing with the Stars. Man I love that show.

Just a question: Does everything look okay centered? I know some sentences look cut off. Just wondering.

    Thanks guys.

It's funny because when I was centering my title and picture I accidentally centered everything. I really liked how it flowed though, and how even it looks. Especially the stats!

    MWC Contenders?

UNLV entered their first MWC game of the year in Wyoming fresh off their first victory of the year. The new Head Coach brought much needed excitement to the team and fan base. The Rebels first 2009 MWC game would be a blowout. The Rebels won 44-21 in comeback fashion. "Comeback?" you say. Wyoming scored the first touchdown of the game after an early UNLV turnover, so technically the Rebels came back. The win moves UNLV to an even 2-2 and undefeated in their lone conference game.

Pic of the Game: Cox shows why they call him "Spider Monkey"

Here at Rebel Report we never sugarcoat anything for you. Well... This game was basically a prison shower scene, and Wyoming forgot to clean behind their ears. We WARNED you about UNLV being a 200/200 team last week. Some people laughed, but the Rebels demolished the Cowboys defense for 532 offensive yards. 306 of those offensive yards came on the ground in the unstoppbale Rebel running game (They aren't called the Runnin' Rebels for nothing appareantly). Trotter and Cox both eclipsed 100 yards rushing and Clayton added 59 of his own. UNLV didn't really need a passing game, but Clayton still decided to throw for 198 yards on 11 completions for a touchdown.

Co-Play of the Game: C. Trotter, 34 Yd run

Wyoming... There wasn't one good thing the Cowboys did. Actually, I take that back. They DID intercept Clayton on UNLV's opening drive and went on to score and take a commanding 7-0 lead. Other than that, they were horrendous. They were beat by more than double their points (44-21), they had less first downs (19-12), UNLV had more than double their offensive production (532-234), they were only 2-for-9 on third downs, and they also had to punt five times. We have to give them credit though, they did have more kick return yards. It may be because UNLV kicked it off nine times to the Cowboys, but god dangit they had more kick return yards. Infact, G. Bolling would even return a kick for a touchdown (that means they had a 11% success rate!).

Co-Play of the Game: C. Cox, 37 Yd run

All in all, the game went as expected. UNLV went to Wyoming and beat the snot out of them like they were expected to do. It's all about expectations, and now everyone expects UNLV to contend for the MWC with their inspired rushing attack. This has been Rebel Report, signing out.

That's one way to beat em!

    Basically here to complain. lulz.

That's one way to stop the running attack... key defensive run middle every play in a pass defense in zone... Here's all the pics and vids (I also had 4 other pics that wouldnt upload to EAsportsworld right away... but i'll get them up)

(They might not be in order, but those videos are literally 4 straight plays. Look at the yard and downs yourself.)

Not just that... While on offense sit on your hands and let the clock roll all the way down. Atleast it made the game faster...

Counterproductive to above is sitting in the endzone for ages after scoring a TD. As seen below...

Short yardage situations? FB Dive. No better medicine.

Sorry guys, im out. I keep getting reminded why I simply dont play online. Sim leagues arent sim leagues, they're just leagues with people who think they dont cheese because they dont chuck the ball every down.

Yes, I ran screwy (and funny) plays at the end. Why not? I might as well had SOME fun in the game.
