    USC Game Summaries (Year 4)

    USC vs Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt was overmatched in every way in this game. This turned into nothing more than a scrimmage for the mighty Trojans. Matt Barkley and Marlin Ward were basically unstoppable in the first half. Ward would run and then Barkley would playaction pass and the Vandy D was completely lost. Vandy put up a good fight in the first quarter connecting on a couple long passes. But the USC defense quickly adjusted to the unexpected game plan and pretty much shut them down for the remainder of the game. With a 35-7 score at the half USC came out with an extremely conservative game plan in the second half. In fact USC only passes the ball one time and it was a screen pass. Still with that conservative game plan USC was able to tack on 17 more points in the second half. USC starts the season 1-0(0-0).

    FINAL SCORE:
    USC-52 Vandy-7

    Player of the Game: Marlin Ward 33 carries 189 yards 3 TD's, 3 receptions 131 yards 2 TD's

    #3 USC at Texas

USC had a tough out of conference game this week against a very talented Texas football team. USC's defense did a fantastic job against a powerful Texas offensive attack. They were able to hold Texas to 142 total yards including only 20 on the ground. USC's offense played well for the most part. They relied heavily on the running game with quick passes and play actions mixed in. The Trojans were able to amass 337 yards of offense and moved the ball very consistently. Unfortunately turnovers stopped some key drives and kept the game close. One of those turnovers gave Texas their only score of the game, a 78 yard fumble return for a TD. It was a hard fought game by both sides and Texas' defense came up big and made some big time plays for turnovers and really made this a nail biter for USC. USC improves to 2-0(0-0).

    FINAL SCORE: USC-19 Texas-7

Player of the Game: Andy Schroeder 4-4 FG's, long of 55

    #2 USC vs Oregon

USC faced another tough test this week. They hosted a re-energized, well coached Oregon team. USC stuck to the game plan that has carried them through the season so far. A tough run game with precision passing. Marlin Ward had a great game and continues to prove himself as a legitimate Heisman candidate. Oregon definitely was not about to go down without a fight. The tough USC defense has trouble getting them off the field all day. Oregon actually came out early in the second half and took the lead 24-20. But the fourth quarter was USC's with 14 points on its way to victory. Matt Barkley did a great job running the offense finishing 13-19 for 176 yards and a TD. Although the defense struggled a bit they did hold Oregon to 209 yards and USC's offense put up 376. USC improves to 3-0(1-0).

    FINAL SCORE: USC-34 Ducks-24

    Player of the Game:
    Marlin Ward 29 carries 183 yards 3 TD's

    #2 USC vs #23 Washington

USC hosted a determined Washington team this week. USC's defense really stepped up big in this game. They were able to shut down Washington's offense most of the game. Both of Washington's touchdowns resulted from USC turnovers. Washington was tough on pass defense. They were able to make two interceptions off of Matt Barkley. Unfortunately for Washington, Marlin Ward would not be denied. He ran over, around, and through Washington's D. A great game in his quest to possibly bring the Heisman back to LA. USC's offense put 340 yards compared to 124 by Washington. Matt Barkley was just 9-16 for 118 yards and 1 TD. Although Marlin Ward would get player of the game honors, the most important performance of the day probably went to Devon Kennard. He racked up a school record 4 sacks against Washington. USC improves to 4-0(2-0).

    FINAL SCORE: USC-30 Washington-14

Player of the Game: Marlin Ward 29 carries 228 yards 2 TD's

    #2 USC at Arizona

USC continues it's dominance in Pac-10 play. But it was no easy fight. Arizona came to play. USC struggled a bit in the first half after starting RB Marlin Ward went out of the game with an injury. Arizona led 7-0 at the end of the 1st. The Trojans put three TD's on the board in the 2nd as their offense started to mesh with backup running back Cortez Brooks. Brooks scored the first TD from 3 yards out, Flournoy scored the next two on receptions of 4 and 65 yards. Arizona also tacked on another TD and a FG in the second to make it 21-17 at the half. Coach JFunk knew just what to say in the locker room and knew the corrections that had to be made. The second half, was all Trojans. USC outscored Arizona 28-0 in the second half and sent the home crown packing. USC improves to 5-0(3-0).

    FINAL SCORE: USC-49 Arizona-17

Player of the Game: Cortez Brooks 28 carries 181 yards 4 TD

#2 USC at #1 Notre Dame

Another epic battle in this storied rivalry. In a game that could possibly have National Title implications, USC and Notre Dame squared off in front of a packed house in South Bend. Notre Dame got off to a great start. Driving straight down the field and capping off the drive with a 3 yard run for a TD by Ryan Maxwell. USC responded with a drive of it's own capped off by a 3 yard run by backup running back Cortez Brooks. A play that really helped get USC a big momentum swing was in the 2nd quarter a ND fumble was picked up by K. Greene and taken 59 yards to the house. The USC defense was very tough in the 2nd and 3rd which helped The Trojans keep the momentum. Marlin Ward added a 10 yard rushing TD in the 3rd and a 15 yard rushing TD in the 4th to make it 28-7. But don't tell The Irish that the game was over at this point. The had a big drive and capped it off with a 8 yard TD by Ryan Maxwell with 3:07 left in the game. USC recovered the onside kick and ran two minutes off the clock before getting stopped on the opposing 9 yard line. Considering ND stopped the clock, still had timeouts and the quick strike ability Coach JFunk went ahead and kicked the 26 yard FG to put it totally out of reach. USC improves to 6-0(3-0).

    FINAL SCORE:
    USC-31 ND-14

    Player of the Game:
Marlin Ward 24 car., 145 yds., 2 TD

    #2 USC at Stanford

Another week, another destruction of a Pac-10 opponent. Stanford tried everything they could in this game but they had no luck against a vastly more talented USC team. TE Antwan Williams scored the first TD in the 1st QTR off a 4 yard pass from QB Matt Barkley. Cortex Brooks scored next in the 2nd with a 2 yard run. Stanford was able to squeeze in their lone TD in the second, a 3 yard run by RB Stutz. Then USC was able to score once more before the half with a 15 yard pass to Devon Flournoy. So with a 21-7 lead at the half The Trojans came out running. Marlin Ward scored twice in the third with runs of 16 and 51. In the 4th Ward scored 2 more with runs of 3 and 20. USC improves to 7-0(4-0).

    FINAL SCORE: USC-49 Stan-7

Player of the Game: Marlin Ward 28 Car, 258 Yds, 4 TD, 1 Rec, 38 Yds

    USC at Washington State

USC makes short work of The Cougars. Washington State was hopelessly over matched in this game. USC racked up 508 total yards of offense compared to just 76 for Washington State. 418 of USC's yards came on the ground in through an unstoppable rushing attack led by backup RB Cortez Brooks. Starting RB Marlin Ward went out of the game early but before he left he still racked up 102 yards on 5 carries. Matt Barkley didn't need to do much except manage the game as he only through 6 passes in this game, completing 5 of them for 90 yards and 3 TD's. His passer rating was an ungodly 374.3. USC's defense was smothering all day. They had 6 sacks, 3 of which came from the DT Lawson. USC had a 42-0 lead at the half and called off the dogs in the second half and adding two more TD's. USC improves to 8-0(5-0).

    FINAL SCORE: USC-56 WSU-0

Player of the Game: Cortez Brooks 29 Car, 210 Yds, 2 TD

    Next game vs Arizona State

    USC vs Arizona State

Another easy win for The Trojans. Some how Coach JFunk has gotten his team to continue to play hard for four quarters every week as this season starts to come to a close. They only have one game of note left on their regular season schedule against UCLA. But regardless of their record and future schedule they continue to come out and play hard on their road to a shot at the BCS National Championship. Once again USC relied on their power running game led by Marlin Ward on their way to victory against Arizona State. USC's defense played well again holding Arizona State to just 192 total yards including only 20 yards on the ground. Matt Barkley played another fantastic game at QB going 11-13 for 196 yards and 4 TD's. USC was able to build up a 28-0 lead at the half and then make it a 35-0 on the first play of the second half with a 66 yard TD run by Marlin Ward and they never looked back. USC improves to 9-0(6-0).

    FINAL SCORE: USC-56 ASU-6

    Player of the Game:
Marlin Ward 26 Car, 243 Yds, 3 TD

    Next game at Oregon State

P.S.- Have some highlights for the game but apparently the server doesn't want to work right now. Hopefully I can get them up later.

USC's march to the National Championship continues. This time their victims were the Beavers in Corvallis. Marlin Ward had another fantastic game, rushing for 212 yards and 3 TD's but he will probably be out for the rest of the regular season with a nagging injury. But he should be healthy for the bowl game. Luckily Cortez Brooks and Devon Flournoy picked up the slack in the running game when it got outta hand in the second half. Flournoy is a WR by trade but he is second in line to run the Wildcat behind Ward. So when he went down Flournoy got the call to go in and was impressive with the ball in his hand. So impressive Coach JFunk had to limit his carries to just 3 because he was doing too well with such a big lead. All in all a dominating performance. USC improves to 10-0(7-0).

    FINAL SCORE: USC-66 Or St-14

    USC vs Cal

Well the last few weeks Coach JFunk has hailed his team for their ability to focus and continue to play hard week in and week out. But this week is reviews of his team were not so glowing. They struggled all day on defense, allowing Cal to gain 355 yards on them. The offense for the most part was very effective running and passing well as well as going 3/3 in the red zone. Luckily for USC they were able to put Cal's starting QB out of the game in the first half and that slowed down their offense a little bit. The game was 31-20 USC at the half. Cal was only able to squeak out a FG in the second half while USC was able to tack on two more TD's. USC improves to 11-0(8-0).

    FINAL SCORE: USC-45 Cal-23

Player of the Game: Cortez Brooks 30 Car, 248 Yds, 3 TD

    Next week at UCLA

    USC vs UCLA

In possibly the greatest cross-town rivalry in all of sports the USC Trojans defeated the UCLA Bruins. UCLA has played tough all season and USC had been looking forward to this game for a weeks. Some experts had USC on "Upset Alert" and rightfully so. UCLA has a very good football team and never gave up fighting in this game. UCLA was well aware of USC's success running the football this season and they decided they would win or lose this game on trying to stop the run. Epic fail. Matt Barkley proved regardless of his numbers this season and the offense he plays in, he is well capable of throwing the football and winning the game with his arm. He was 17-27 for 248 yards and 3 TD's. The absence of Marlin Ward, the Trojans' workhorse tailback, was noticeable in this game as they struggled to get consistent yardage on the ground from their tailback position. Cortez Brooks ran the ball 18 times for 66 yards and a TD. The real spark on the ground came from USC's all-around athlete Devon Flournoy. He has taken over a lot of the Wildcat responsibility for The Trojans and has done a fine job. He ran the ball 4 times for 47 yards and a TD in this game.

UCLA actually led the game 7-3 after the first quarter. USC stormed back in the second quarter putting 21 on the board, including a long 56 yard pass to Devon Flournoy from Barkley. The Trojans' took a 24-16 lead into the half. The Trojans' added two more scores in the third quarter and a FG in the fourth to seal the deal. USC finishes the regular season 12-0(9-0), win the Victory Bell, and clinches the Pac-10 title... again.

    FINAL SCORE: USC-41 UCLA-22

Player of the Game: Devon Flournoy 4 Rec, 81 Yds, TD
