    USC Trojans game summaries

    USC vs Auburn

The Trojans can basically thank their defense for clutch plays that won this game. From the first score with a 43 yard TD by the kicker Schroeder as a result of an Auburn fumble to the 47 yard returned interception by Jones to take the lead in the 4th the D came up clutch. Although they really didn't have an answer to Auburn's offense and their TE's giving up 290 yards through the air, the D did make big stop when they were most imperative and showed a lot of character in doing so.

    FINAL SCORE: USC-29 AU-28

Player of the Game: LOLB Jarvis Jones 6 tackles 2 INT's

    Cougars no match for Trojans

This game was over before it started. This may be a rebuilding year for USC but they still have astronomically more talent that Washington State. In the first Curtis McNeal capped off a long scoring drive with a 1 yard TD run. In the second a 75 yard pass from Matt Barkley to frosh TE Antwan Williams made it 14-0. Then WSU was able to put up their only score of the game on a pick six. Barkley got nailed as he threw and the ball went straight up into the air an down into a defenders hands and he rumbled 56 yards for the score. Next drive Barkley to RS Freshman receiver Bryan Givens for 24 yards and the score. Now 21-7. McNeal added a 7 yard TD run at the end of the half to give The Trojans the 28-7 lead at the half. In the third another scoring drive this time capped off by frosh FB Jermaine Rich with a 1 yard TD run. McNeal added another 1 yard TD run in the third as well. In the fourth The Cougars got a heavy dose of Curtis McNeal and even though they knew it was coming, there was little they could do to stop him. He added two more TD's on the ground in the fourth.

    FINAL SCORE: USC-56 WSU-7

Player of the Game: Curtis McNeal 33 carries 287 yards 5 TD's

    Notes: USC's offense outgained WSU's 582 to 156.

USC has a bye week next week.

    USC @ Cal

Cal gave USC fits all day. They matched up very well athletically and made it hard on USC's young defensive backfield. Coach JFunk says he thinks it was a good learning experience for them and will make them better players over time. QB Matt Barkley had a pretty good day 17-25 for 268 yards and a TD to lead a very effective USC passing attack. This was a key Pac-10 win for USC. Cal is no pushover and came out fired up in their home stadium and made USC look very uninspired. Coach JFunk will undoubtedly remind his team that on "any given Saturday, any team can beat the other team." This will be a key learning lesson as they prepare to take on a dangerous Stanford team.

    FINAL SCORE: USC-29 Cal-17

Player of the Game: Curtis McNeal 25 carries 132 yards 2 TD

    USC vs Stanford

Well Stanford came to play that's for sure. The coaching staff at Stanford has that team heading in the right direction and they should be a force to be reckoned with soon. This game just came down to USC having too much talent to be held down for long. Stanford did a great job of keeping the game close and even had the lead at one point in the 2nd quarter. They forced Matt Barkley to make some bad throws and caused 3 early interceptions. Barkley calmed down a bit and the switched up the plays a little bit and was able to finish 14-19 for 233 yards and 2 TD. His play in the second half really made the difference and opened up some more running lanes for Curtis McNeal. This was a great game all around between a traditional powerhouse and a up and comer and it was an exciting game to watch. USC improves to 4-1(3-0).

    FINAL SCORE: USC-38 Stanford-24

Player of the Game: Curtis McNeal 17 carries for 129 yards and a TD

    USC at Oregon

Another day, another Pac-10 win for USC. Oregon kept it close and it was a respectable 21-10 at the half. USC stepped up their intensity in the 3rd and scored 23 points, one offensive TD, one special teams TD, and a safety. This was one of those games that really was closer than the scoreboard would show. Even though their was a 37 point score difference the USC offense only outscored the Oregon offense 307 to 267. But as USC is prone to do, they made some big plays and found a way to win. USC still needs to work out some kinks to make their play more efficient as they prepare for the second half of the season. The Trojans improve to 5-1(4-0).

    FINAL SCORE: USC-51 Oregon-17

Player of the Game: Curtis McNeal 19 carries 124 yards and a TD.

    USC at Arizona State

Arizona State may not be ranked but they are no pushover. They are a talented team that gave my young defense a headache all day. USC's passing game was serviceable in the game, nothing to write home about. But luckily there running attack was nearly unstoppable, racking up 290 yards on the ground. Matt Barkley was just 4 for 7 for 14 yards and a TD when he was put out of the game. The training staff doesn't believe he will miss any extended time and should be back next week. Cedric Schmidt played alright in his absence 5 for 11 for 113 yards. This Trojan team is young and is going threw the growing pains associated with a tough conference schedule. They are happy to have won 6 straight and hope to build on their success the rest of this season and into next. USC improves to 6-1(5-0).

    #4 USC vs Arizona

Another tough Pac-10 opponent give a valiant effort but gets downed by this young USC team. And it wasn't for a lack of play by Arizona. Their offense and defense played exceptionally well but this USC team knows how to win and make big plays in he clutch. The two big ones were a 92 yard KO return for a TD by Flourney and an 85 yard pick 6 by Lane. The offense was less than impressive although Heisman candidate Curtis McNeal was able to rack up 111 yards and 2 TD. After the game Coach JFunk seemed less than content about his team's play and vows changes will be made until he is happy with the product he puts on the field. USC improves to 7-1(6-0).

    FINAL SCORE: USC-37 Arizona-14

    Player of the Game:
Curtis McNeal 25 carries 111 yards 2 TD

My summaries have been lacking recently with the holidays and my bout wit strep throat so I will start with my most recent game and keep them rocking again. Now on to the quick summary.

    USC vs Notre Dame

It was a tough game for USC's young defense. They were able to keep the high powered ND offense from killing them with big plays but in the process could not get the ND offense off the field. The Trojan D was able to get them in 13 third down situations but ND's offense came up with the big conversion 10 of those times. So needless to say the time of possession was heavily in The Irish's favor. While they USC offense only massed 199 yards of offense they only held the ball for 6:38 minutes of the the entire game. The USC had a chance to win the game at the end but redshirt freshman receiver Bryan Givens couldn't hold onto a perfectly thrown ball on fourth down to end the game. The D played their hearts out but the couldn't quite match up with the receiving corps of ND with their outstanding QB. Tough loss but a good learning lesson for The Trojans. USC drops to 9-2(8-0).

    FINAL SCORE:
    USC-21 ND-27

Player of the Game: Frankie Telfort 10 tackles, 1 TFL
