Utes Rebound; Knock Off #1 PSU at Home

    21-9

The attention has always been on Utah's offense, but it was the Defense that came through in the clutch this time. A few timely turnovers and excellent pass defense won this game for the Utes.

Penn State was running the ball effectively throughout the game, but when the field shortened and the Nittany Lions' options were limited, the Salty Defense from Salt Lake stepped up big time with 4 sacks and 2 interceptions (one in the endzone).

The offense had their moments too, with the play of the game coming from Senior WR Devonte Christopher. He took a screen pass over the middle and broke from the hashes to the sideline. A PSU defender appeared to be in perfect position to make the stop, but a flash of the feet from Christopher made it clear that the defender was only in perfect position to get embarrassed and give up a game-changing TD.

That score, late in the third, would give the Utes a lead they would not surrender. Utah would tack on another 7 points early in the 4th to put this one out of the reach of Penn State's anemic offense (who only mustered 3 FGs on the day).

    Statline Story:

    UTAH: 30 Rushes @ 3.2 ypc

    PSU: 26 Rushes @ 4.9 ypc

    UTAH: 11/14 Passing @ 17.14 ypp (yards per pass) (3TD 0INT)

    PSU: 13/27 Passing @ 6.11 ypp (yards per pass) (0TD 2INT)

It was evident that Penn State gave up on the run one or two drives too soon, but they werent having much success with a shortened field anyway. Utah's defense gave up big TD plays to Miss St in their last game, and the coaching staff cooked up a scheme that allowed the Utes to keep everything in front of them and capitalize on the other team's mistakes.

    *****BREAKING NEWS*****
Salt lake City, UT (AP) -- During a press conference after the game, Coach Max was asked to respond to a comment made by Penn State's head coach. After learning the Lions werent that impressed with their performance, Coach Max responded "They werent that impressed overall? I figured 21-9 was a beat-down in Big10 terms...". He later added "Maybe they'll get a chance to impress us in the Rose Bowl sometime". There is apparently a cross-country, inter-conference rivalry brewing between PSU and the PAC12 newcomer, who became familiar with the BIG10 in last year's epic Rose Bowl battle. The media is hooked now. Everyone will be looking forward to the next Utah vs. Penn State game.
