    Utah Utes 2009 Season Preview

    Offense

After baffling Alabama’s defense with a no-huddle scheme in the early stages of a Sugar Bowl victory that completed an unbeaten season, Utah will try to keep a fast tempo going this season with a new leader. Corbin Louks, who was used mostly as a runner in specialty packages the past two seasons, is the likely replacement for quarterback Brian Johnson, the Mountain West Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year. Junior college transfer Terrance Cain was “neck-and-neck†with Louks after spring drills, according to coach Kyle Whittingham.

The Utes also lost their top three receivers, but Whittingham believes a group that features David Reed and Jereme Brooks will be “just as good or better.â€ÂÂ

Utah’s passing game will be complemented by running back Matt Asiata, who shared the position last season and still gained 707 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. Asiata was especially effective when taking a direct snap, and new offensive coordinator Dave Schramm, formerly Utah’s running backs coach, is sure to emphasize that formation again.

Up front, the Utes will feature left tackle Zane Beadles and left guard Caleb Schlauderaff. In spring drills, center Zane Taylor moved to right guard to shore up that side of the line.

Utah ranked third in the conference in total offense in 2008, producing 400.9 yards per game. The Utes were opportunistic, turning those yards into 36.9 points to lead the league and rank 15th nationally.

    Defense

Utah’s defense was thought to be a year away from greatness in 2008, with only one senior in the lineup. The growth was accelerated as the Utes ranked 11th in the country in total defense (289.2 ypg) and 12th in scoring defense (17.2 ppg). TCU and Alabama each scored only one offensive touchdown vs. Utah.

Even though they lost cornerback Sean Smith and end Paul Kruger as underclassmen to the NFL Draft, the Utes will have another solid defense. Whittingham labels Koa Misi and Derrick Shelby the conference’s best pair of ends, while Stevenson Sylvester and Mike Wright lead an outstanding group of linebackers.

Kalani Sitake is Utah’s new defensive coordinator, having worked with the linebackers the past four seasons.
In the secondary, both cornerbacks must be replaced, but R.J. Stanford and Brandon Burton have 4.3 speed. The safeties, Robert Johnson and Joe Dale, are aggressive, versatile players. Johnson ranked second on the team with four interceptions, including two in the Sugar Bowl
