The last two weeks, questions have surrounded the Miners defense. They allowed 55 points to SMU and 34 to NMSU for a total of 89 points. Coach Weaver challenged the defense to step it up. And step it up they did. The Miners absolutely smothered the Bulls offense allowing a mere 102 yards of offense in rout to a 23-3 victory. UTEP's rushing offense continue to gain large chunks of ground. The thunder and lightning duo of Joseph Banyard (24 carries, 115 yards) and Vernon Frazier (8 carries, 56 yards) paced the Miner offense. Sophomore quarterback Carson Meger was efficient completing 11 passes out of 20 attempts for 146 yards. This was a much needed win for the Miners who improve to 3-1 on the season. UTEP returns to the Sun Bowl on Saturday to face the Houston Cougars. Kickoff is set for 3:30.
